If Gies is saying it now....

Actually what Gies is doing is the best PR Microsoft can hope for. If you say it's the tools non-techies have hope that Xbox One will eventually be number One. You have the focused on the software (can be updated) and not the hardware (fixed) to do this.

He's still blowing smoke... Software can be fixed in the clouds but the hardware difference will stay.

Well that's because we are all part of the Sony hivemind. You would not believe the amount of hate/meltdowns I've gotten over the last several days.

I wonder if they will apologize?

I have seen many of these hate messages for you and Gaf on many other gaming sites and forums.
Some even directed at CBOAT.
Crazy stuff. But we always believed.

I don't post in these topics often, but...

I'm seriously perplexed how MS had 8 years to make the successor of the 360 and all they did was botch it.

MS Started this downhill ride by getting rid of J Allard. Its only snowballing at this point.

Has a video games resolution ever been increased via a patch after launch? Is this even possible?

The 720p thing is nothing. Literally nothing in the bigger picture. The day one problems is a bigger deal. If MS comes out the door with huge problems, they're going to have a long road to recovery ahead. Moreso if Sony manages to come out without any problems.

Sony went through it and came put of it pretty well. I have no doubt Microsoft can't.

Yeah but you also have a lot of other people that put down $500 hoping to get the best and this happens.

Sure but they don't care and have made that a point for like months now. I really don't understand the overreacting to news that we've all come to agreement with months ago. We all accepted that yes, the Xbone is not as powerful than the PS4 and some games will suffer from launch blues. It got so bad to the point that execs are personally recognizing the problem, making statements we've all heard even up coming in Gaf. I think this whole thing should be done with. It doesn't matter. I really think this doesn't phase anyone who's paying $500 because most likely they aren't buying for the graphics but for the experience and what it means to them. 720p is not what they are paying $500 for.

The Microsoft PR team have to walk a minefield each time they wake up in the morning. I've never seen a company shelter so many of their weaknesses; then just plainly walk out and BS to every extent that they can.

Back when I was working on a few cross-platform 360/PS3 games; it was around the time that Kinect was being announced and spewed to the world. There was also a document Microsoft circulated with 10 known problems with Kinect; which they were aware of and working on. I mean completely game breaking things; which most ended up quickly being found out by users after release; as none were addressed even after release.

It was awkward watching them pitch the kinect to the public; knowing the key topics they were avoiding.

:/

Right... no one at the Microsoft PR division can possibly know the resolution of the games on their platforms; give me a fucking break. They knew shit was going to hit the fan when they put that embargo in place and planted Penello on this forum.

How can there be an embargo established to not leak these specific resolutions; yet someone like Penello is completely unaware of this hot topic? Really?

If CBOAT ever spills publicly what s/he shared via PM regarding a myriad of other technical issues going on right now...

I'm going right back in that shelter and welding it shut.

But is this something that members of the press are aware of and keeping quiet, or something bigger/deeper inside MS that only insiders know, is what I'd like to know.

Ok i always get both Xbox and Playstation consoles but i am more of an Xbox fan, i also only have a 720p TV so none of this really effects me but i think i'm going to go with the PS4 first and get the Xbox One later. The resolution 'problem' doesn't even bother me because like i said i only have a 720p TV but i just can't cope with the negativity anymore, its like fucking cancer and its seriously frustrating and effecting me being on here and other forums so i'm just going to go with PS4 first and join everyone else as i can't really take all this shit anymore, i leave this forum with headaches at times.

Don't take it to heart so much, if it is affecting you this badly maybe you should take time away.

yup I wrote similar comment on prev page. But it seems most of the members don't see his bs

All that Kinect money, which could have been invested in better hardware. At this point, I really think, Kinect is the worst thing ever, that happened to Microsoft. Instead of waiting with the Kinect, until the Xbox One sells great/good, they rushed the whole Xbox One development, which lead to crap like this.

Even, if it's 99,99% unlikely, it would be the best, if they recall the Xbox One and start all over again. Well, maybe not from the beggining, but from somewhere, where the Kinect isn't forced on us and where the Xbox One hardware matters, where games matter and where overall performance matters. Stupid Kinect, stupid "all in one entertainment system". They should focus on those points on a later point, like they did with the Xbox 360.

Also, I'm not sure, if this is known or not, but I heared, how 2 GameStop workers talked about the Xbox One the other day, when I tried to pick up Beta codes for Destiny. They basically said, that they are not allowed to sell any retail console on launch day, instead they are only allowed to give out the pre-ordered ones, so that it looks like the Xbox One is sold out. I don't want to spread lies, but I ensure you, that it's definetely, what they said. I don't know, if it's true or not, but I see no reason, why they should lie.

I feel like that would be horrible business from GameStop and Microsoft's stand point. On gamestop's end they would assumingly be taking a loss in revenue presumably because of a kickback from a company that a few months ago all but wanted to eliminate their business with always online crap. On microsofts end it would take a TON of money, not just to GameStop but to other retailers as well, in order to be effective and would presumably have huge legal ramifications if found out.

Worst part..This aint going to be changing anytime soon.

Salvador post yet? He okay?

Even if they reach resolution parity down the line due to the tools maturing, the power difference will give PS4 the advantaged since its tools will mature as well. At the end of the day the hardware makes the difference when the architecture is the same.

In all seriousness, I personally believe that there are no reviews because a patch to allow Xbox to be played isn't released yet, similar to PS4's FW1.5.

Maybe Microsoft is finding a way to actually run the review copies and might be having some trouble there. Anyone thought of that?

I thought we were getting Xbox One game footage soon from reviewers?

So is the issue the gimped hardware, the immature development tools or both?

Sounds like basically;
- MS didn't expect Sony to go to the top end for hardware specs, and so the hardware is 'gimped' in a way, because they're trying to compensate for the difference, which makes development harder because it's not an ideal solution
- The development tools and working environment aren't mature yet, which is causing further problems - this is because again, MS underestimated when Sony would release the PS4, so as a result of their reactionary response, development is suffering
- Then you have the whole DRM fiasco which completely obliterated MS's original vision for the platform, so this reversal probably also adversely affected certain parts of development (such as cloud computing) and probably caused a big mess in the OS development, because they had to scrap big parts of the infrastructure, which may be the cause of technical difficulties this close to launch

So is Pennello going to give his apology or not? I remember him asking if GAF would apologize if there weren't significant differences "besides 1 or 2 fps" between the two consoles.
Albert Penello
I’m not going to get into this PR thing again. There are clearly people who understand, and people who don’t. I’ve been a GAF member for a while, and was a reader long before that. I’ve been in gaming my entire professional career, and a player since videogames EXISTED. I come on GAF because I want to. I don’t get paid to post here or any other silly nonsense. Occasionally, the PR team will roll me out to do official interviews, which I’m not really a huge fan of doing.

Performance: I’m not dismissing raw performance. I’m stating – as I have stated from the beginning – that the performance delta between the two platforms is not as great as the raw numbers lead the average consumer to believe. There are things about our system architecture not fully understood, and there are things about theirs as well, that bring the two systems into balance.

People DO understand that Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers IN THE WORLD. We CREATED DirectX, the standard API’s that everyone programs against. So while people laude Sony for their HW skills, do you really think we don’t know how to build a system optimized for maximizing graphics for programmers? Seriously? There is no way we’re giving up a 30%+ advantage to Sony. And ANYONE who has seen both systems running could say there are great looking games on both systems. If there was really huge performance difference – it would be obvious.

I get a ton of hate for saying this – but it’s been the same EVERY generation. Sony claims more power, they did it with Cell, they did it with Emotion Engine, and they are doing it again. And, in the end, games on our system looked the same or better.

I’m not saying they haven’t built a good system – I’m merely saying that anyone who wants to die on their sword over this 30%+ power advantage are going to be fighting an uphill battle over the next 10 years…
lol... Never forget.

Left this thread open at like page 25 and ran to EB games to trade some stuff in. Come back and its at 45. I clicked page through page praying I didn't miss a CBOAT bombshell and I didn't. Not moving from this thread for rest of time.

Is it bad that I don't care that the Xbone's resolution is the lesser one?

#stillconsoleofchoice

I do think it doesn't look very good at all, but you're not the only one. The XB1 is the system that most excites me right now, even though I'll also be grabbing a ps4 later.

A lot of people won't know. And even some that do, just won't care. For those where this is a major issue. Well, they'll go grab each game for the PS4. Pretty straightforward.

what if BF4 and Ghosts are 720p on Xbox One but run MUCH smoother than on PS4..? what if the PS4 versions chug like crazy? which one would you rather PLAY? remember what happened with PS3 versions this gen, almost all had framerate issues compared to Xbox 360... i could see history repeating itself again. MS aren't stupid. besides a lot of people only have 720p tvs anyway so they won't miss 1080p. it's just a luxury, not necessary for good gameplay. and do you honestly REALLY trust a Dualshock to be good with FPS shooters? yeah no thanks

anyway.. whatever the case you can play Titanfall ONLY on Xbox LIVE ;)
I'm willing to bet most people have 1080p TVs over 720p. I think the HDTV boom happened around when 1080p became affordable.

This is such a good post by the way.
Really informative.

I look forward to the day MS comes out year later and announces like it's the second coming. "We have the tools now. We have the power!"

And what exactly are these tools that are missing anyway?

wait wait... could you explain that a bit more for me?

what is gaf definition of a clear fanboy and someone who favor one system over the other?

Me? since I started gaming, I loved the Gamecube, then the early Xbox 360 and then when Xbox failed to come out with new exclusive, and when I got bored of Halo 3 after 3 years. Traded it in for a PS3 and havent look back since.

I like Sony, since they first mistake with the PS3 they really have been stepping up and make better exclusive while doing their best to provide quality services like PSN+.

I got a PS4 pre-ordered which im definitely picking up, and an Xbox One. but with all these bad rumors (or maybe they should be upgrade to unconfirmed news now) I might go cancel my Xbox One, save the money down the line, wait for an eventual Titanfall bundle that will be cheaper or something.

hope that doesnt make me a clear fanboy..

Of course not, like I said, everyone has preferences over other stuff, it's just the way you express your preference, if you spam stuff like 'lolol xbox suxxxx' then yeah.. that ain't right. Otherwise, you're good to go ;D

The worse possible technical news for the Xbone would be a RROD equivalent. That is literally a hellish scenario that would make the Hindenburg blush.
You can get away with an RROD scenario when you have a year's head start, a price advantage, technological parity, a monstrous head start in online innovation, solid infrastructure in place with great minds and visionary ideas, good faith from your customer base because you haven't fucked up before and an arrogant competitor.

Now let's see what happens when Microsoft has NONE of those advantages and is cutting costs paper thin in every area that isn't marketing or a smokescreen.

I kind of want to visit a parallel universe where MS continued with their original vision (assuming that the bolded part is the case) just to see how things would have played out.

Have you heard of a PC? -_o
