I think everyone severely underestimated what Mattrick leaving actually meant for the Xbox division. I firmly he left out of choice, and because he saw exactly what was going to happen when this console launched this November. Instead of being on the sinking ship when it went down, he decided to bail out well before.

Smart decision, smart man.

This. What Proelyte said days ago is a bigger deal than a couple shooters not hitting 1080p at launch. That's utterly meaningless if the reason for it was shitty drivers in development.

I think it's a combination of eSRAM and shitty drivers. The 32mb esram looks to be a real bottleneck.

Sony Feb conference was the most evil act in corporations history! they surprised the sh*t out of Microsoft lol

Dude, they f**king ninja'ed them. Kaz Hirai in action. The best part is he faked them out in an interviewed with The Times where he said he would never launch before MS.

Kaz's fake out

Then they go and announce in Feb. That's proper console warfare right there.

if cboat really knows something about the xone launch, that could affect day one buyers in a (big?) negative way, he should just let it out.

while i cant imagine what that might be, but i would like to know (since 3 of my friends are getting x1 on launch day here in europe).

lol

Most people did also since Sony has no money .
I think people need to remember that MS has a huge amount of cash but that does not equal the xbox division having it .
Add in suit making problems with the xbox division and here we are .

Well the Ps4 is a result of Sony not having infinite funds. I mean its not like the Ps4 is extremely powerful. Its mostly off the shelf stuff and far behind what you can plug into your desktop.

Its just that the X1 is somehow even less powerful. And thats a result of MS having the focus on other things beside gaming.

Windows 8 is stable and fast though. Something else has gotta be causing the issues.

Dude a 12 CU , 16 ROP, 1.3TFlop , 67GB/s card is god awful in the PC world. It was low-mid tier in 2009. A 100-120$ card.

The power of the X1 is not impressive at all. Not even in 2011 would it of been.

If it wasn't for KI, I would totally pass on the bone. Not having 1080p while the competitor does is unbelievably lazy and disappointing. How in the HELL does this happen?

Now now. Jeff Gertsmann has something to say for all us console warriors making fun of the Xbone!

I kinda agree with him but am also having way too much fun. Sad when I consider he's more mature than me haha!

I don't even remotely understand why is Jeff running damage control for the xbone. Because that's what that read to me.

I'd seriously avoid getting the Xbox One at launch, in light of today's news and indications there are more megatons to follow soon.

Certain rendering techniques require a certain number of pixelbuffers (in addition to the framebuffer). Those are data structures that hold information for every pixel on the screen (e.g. color, transparency, material, ...). Since they are accessed often, access to these buffers requires bandwidth. Their size depends on the game's resolution. For instance, a buffer with a depth of 4 bytes requires ~8MB at 1080p and ~3.5MB at 720p.

On the XBO those buffers have to be placed into the eSRAM if high bandwidth access is crucial. However, the more buffers you need and the higher the resolution is, the more space you need. 32MB become a limit.

That's a perfect explanation for us non tech folk

I have often wondered about that myself. Got the hell out of Dodge before shit hit the fan.

here's my 2 cents.

CBOAT is saying that MS is having technical problems with their system, more worrying and potentially damaging than CoD and BF4 being 720p.

Some people are speculating its problems with the OS. And we know that the X1 already allocates 3GB of their GPU/ram for the OS.

What if they are needing more than that 3GB for the OS, and that's why games have less to work with, hence 720p?

this would mean less hardware for the software to work with, for the entire generation.

Great post from famousmortimer in another thread

But here's another story you won't hear from anyone inside Sony but I will put my account here on the line as absolutely true. Cerny was told from the get-go "Your target price is $299 to $399." Every step of the way, every decision he and his team made, had this goal in mind.

Anything but $399 was never a possibility. They started building it around GDDR5 (2gb at first, then 4) and with the camera packed and it was $399. GDDR5 got cheaper quicker and they made higher capacity chips earlier than they could have ever projected and in the week leading up to the reveal they decided to drop the camera and up the ram to 8gb.

That later point is fairly well known by now... but my point is that an engineer is looking at the last/highest possible figure. If you say "299 to 399" they are making a machine that is $399. If you say "late '13 to early (and by early I mean spring) '14" they are thinking '14. And I think that's fairly obvious now that it's launching in 13 countries and without voice support for most languages. They aren't ready.

3DS launched without an eshop. Vita launched without PSone support. The Wii U OS was a disaster for most of this year. Shit happens. But if you look at all of the data coming in from things being pushed to next year to launch games just not being ready - I think you'll find that November isn't really the month they should launch in.

I think MS will have it together by next holiday. The question is whether this rocky start will bury them or not.

Sorry man, I'll buy you a beer.

I'll take a Samuel Adams :)

Also, you act like Nintendo is non-existent. I'd argue that the Sony/MS arms race is what chased them away from being hardware competitive in the first place. Without MS the arms race would slow down, development costs would plateau, and Ninendo likely would step back into the void immediately as the first legitimate challenger to Sony. That opening might even make Nintendo get with the times in terms of network infrastructure and marketplace as they'd then have a legitimate chance at competing profitably in a two format war.

Sony v. Nintendo with a new comer other than MS and we've got ourselves a far healthier games industry. Microsoft have shit on consumer good will faster than any company I've ever seen and the 180s are all thinly veiled "for now" promises that make it incredibly clear the original plan is still the end goal here.

Never looked at it this way, regarding what Nintendo would do. Sometimes I think they still have that tech arms race hunger in them, but are like "why bother" if both Sony and MS are in that game. If MS steps out I could also see them filling the void.

Altho I'm not as gungho on MS leaving as a lot of people seem, I gotta admit their policies are really terrible. My sister can't even use her 360 right now b/c she forgot to pay the monthly fee.

Yes, she was dumb enough to get the subscription model and yes, I tried telling her to get a PS3 plenty of times instead, but I honestly cannot think of another company that enables the practice of completely bricking your product if you don't pay a monthly fee, especially if you've paid enough in previous months to practically have bought the product outright. Not even smartphones do that shit, you can still access all your local apps and media and even get internet if it supports bluetooth or wifi.

It's reasons like that why I can see how many people really loathe MS and want them out of the industry.

Huh, you might be on to something.

Ok, I'm almost caught up with the thread. I feel like I missed something because I never heard of CBOAT until clicking on this thread. He obviously leaked something... Is a/he a GAF'er? Someone give me some context!

The resolution would have more to do with the GPU than the RAM. We already know the GPU is weaker than the PS4's. This just confirms it.

Not at all surprised. That embargo had to set the alarm bells ringing for anybody who wasn't already hearing them loud and clear. I still can't get over how badly MS have fucked up this console, damn they've made some fucking stupid decisions. If I was them I'd now be planning for a short gen, about 4 or 5 years..max lol.

I can't fucking believe that Microsoft

A: Let Sony get the drop on them with the 2013 release
B: Let Sony get the drop on them with the specs

They basically did what Sony did with the start of the PS3, but I don't know if they can turn it around. That took Sony -years-.

That February conference (& to a lesser extent the E3 one) are going to be the stuff of legend soon

At this point I'd say they're in a worse position than PS3 was at launch. PS3 didn't have that mega bad PR of DRM behind it, the performance problems for cross plat games are no where near as pronounced as this need to change resolution, and Sony enjoys a lot more Japanese loyalty than Microsoft's American loyalty.

The only thing the One can say over the PS3 is it's only $100 more expensive instead of $200, and Titanfall.

It's stable and fast for a Windows OS. Compared to a specially built FreeBSD variant it's a bloated, plodding, monstrosity with bad joints. Then add another OS on top of that and an independent software package to run Kinect.

This is like the tortoise and the hare having a rematch and this time the tortoise has to carry a bag of rocks on his back. The hare ain't fucking around this time, them feels from last time are still too fresh.
