DRM affects the average consumer much more than resolution.

You seriously believe people don't pay attention to resolution when buying TVs? Hell, this is just turning into "consumers can't tell the difference between SD and HD" part two.

It's one thing to argue "consumers don't care about hardware differences." That's true - they're not paying attention to a 7770 vs 7850, ESRAM + DDR3 vs GDDR5, etc. But throw something that's more in familiar territory - like HDTV resolution numbers - that's something people can pick up on much more easily.

If they didn't perceive this as potentially damaging they wouldn't embargo it until essentially launch.

Whoa whoa. Didn't someone say that the PS4 reviews were embargoed until the 5th and the XBOne's on the 12th? Both are 10 days away from their respective launches. I have a problem with embargoes in general, but I'm not seeing the conspiracy here if this is the case. Both companies have an embargo 10 days prior to their respective launches.

You seriously believe people don't pay attention to resolution when buying TVs?

Considering most people can't even calibrate their fucking TVs properly, I honestly don't think they do. I get customers pissed off that both XB1 and PS4 use HDMI only and not analog connections. ><

If the difference between the consoles is basically resolution, than is irrelevant for the mass market.
This man gets it.

The only way "resolution gate" matters is if 3rd party developers start coming out in droves forgoing the development of One versions of games. If we return to PS2-era volumes of exclusive software for Sony, then consumers will care.

Otherwise, the only people who will care are lurking or posting here. Lower visual fidelity relative to the competition didn't stop the Genesis, PS2, or Wii from selling in droves and being strong competitors...and at present there are fewer and fewer exclusive 3rd party games than in those generations past.

The GAF echo chamber is loud and entertaining, but feels out of touch. Sometimes too deep in the details many don't care strongly about. This is one of those times. Not to say that resolution and power differences aren't the base upon which many will decide which console to buy...but if it was *that* important, you'd probably be a PC gamer. On consoles, it's about the games, pure and simple. If we see 3rd parties making more and more games PS4 exclusive this will be a big deal. Until then, multiplats -- which I think represent the largest segment of game sales (conjecture) -- will still be present and accounted for from all the franchises your average gamer these days want...while remaining the only place to play Gears, Halo and the rest for the forseeable future. That matters more than resolution, as much as it may bother some.

what if BF4 and Ghosts are 720p on Xbox One but run MUCH smoother than on PS4..? what if the PS4 versions chug like crazy? which one would you rather PLAY? remember what happened with PS3 versions this gen, almost all had framerate issues compared to Xbox 360... i could see history repeating itself again. MS aren't stupid. besides a lot of people only have 720p tvs anyway so they won't miss 1080p. it's just a luxury, not necessary for good gameplay. and do you honestly REALLY trust a Dualshock to be good with FPS shooters? yeah no thanks

anyway.. whatever the case you can play Titanfall ONLY on Xbox LIVE ;)

Think people are underestimating the impact of this. Even if consumers can't tell the difference between the resolutions unless if they are side-by-side, just the fact that one version is better than the other will influence their buying decisions. Particularly for those getting both consoles.

Well, not to start that debate again, but there's The Order which will be 1920x800, with 280 lines of black pixels.

I have a feeling some of the Japanese launch games will be 720p (I think media for Deep Down and Yakuza have been).

The order 1886...

The Order is fully 1080p game with letterbox or 16:9 ratio, whatever. Just like the movies on blu-ray.

The case of Ghosts is weird. Both in terms of why a crossgen game built on such old tech would struggle like this on next gen and why the PC/NextGne versions are so huge. Are HD textures really taking up 20GB or more of extra space compared to the subHD ones for the 360/PS3?

OT but is Jeremy the ManaByte from GAF? I remember his Star Wars threads and swoon for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. lol

Exactly. You don't reveal a third party's information without their permission. Good on ya, Yosh.

I've been saying this for ages. For some reason, no one seemed to agree! :'(

I wasn't defending Albert, but this was the most naive argument I had seen on Gaf that wasn't getting challenged by more than 2 people.

There are going to be confirmed sub-1080p games whenever they announce what BF4's resolution is. :)
Well, mortimer says that it's 1080p at present.

But you could certainly be right.

In any event, there will surely be sub-1080p games, and even 720p games, on the PS4 as well, depending on other development priorities and/or budgets for particular games. People who think everything is going to be 1080p are in for a rude awakening I imagine.

If CBOAT ever spills publicly what s/he shared via PM regarding a myriad of other technical issues going on right now...

I'm going right back in that shelter and welding it shut.

Ever since it was posted this bit of information has me curious and worried about these technical issues. I hope we get more info soon.

This thread has been keeping me up too long... I need sleep!

They had to has tested the game at 1080p and see that the performance was not on par with the other versions.

And I don't see Activision wanting to put more resources into a finished game...

I don't know shit about programming but is a patch even possible for such a drastic change? It would be like the the most game-altering patch in video game history.
