October 8, 2004 -- THE Source magazine was so irked when Russell Simmons pulled out of its Hip-Hop Voter Education Rally in Miami this weekend, its founders, David Mays and Ray Benzino, ripped into the Def Jam Records king with a vengeance. "Russell Sim mons has been exploiting hip- hop for years," the duo declared in a statement. "Russell is further from hip-hop, the community and struggle it repre sents than he has ever been.
Russell is a serious threat to the advancement of the black community and hip-hop cul ture because he exploits the percep tion in corporate America that he represents the views of the hip-hop community when he does not . . . Russell Simmons may represent the Hamptons and his rich friends, but they don't represent the hip- hop community." Simmons re fused to rise to the bait and sim ply said: "I only want to promote posi tivity and dialogue within the hip-hop community. I have no ill will toward them and wish them well."
