I thought Canadians had socialized healthcare. This job is in Toronto.

If that's the case then we need to know what benefits he'll be giving up.

I'm not familiar at all with whats typical for Canadian benefits.

Don't know. Guessing some form of retirement benefits.

Sigh...

Yes, we have socialized healthcare. If I get into an accident, I don't have to worry about going to the hospital and deciding whether or not I can pay for the operation nor do I have to decide on what fingers to keep.

HOWEVER, for other stuff, it's not covered.

Medicine can be expensive
Glasses and eye exams are not covered in Ontario
foot doctors are not covered

there's other stuff in there as well. It's EXTRA coverage.

exactly benefits is more than just healthcare. Its 401k/401b and other things like that.

How hard have you been putting in applications? Have you already expressed a start date? Can you say, "OK, give me a month to get situated for this job" and see if anything tuns up? If nothing turns up after 4 weeks, will this job be better than where you were at? If so, take it. But keep looking for jobs casually. At least your set via taxes for a car wreck, and I'm sure you can buy a cheap form of medical insurance in CA to tide you over until a better situation pops up, assuming this is better than your current situation... but you'll definitely want to look for something with more long term benefits in the long run if this company offers nothing in the short term OR relatively soon long term.

I'd advise dodging this, unless it's a step up for you. It sounds like a bad environment.
