Joe Montana Football 16

Let say all this is true, the leaks and the clues left by Grow and whatnot.

It is absolutely brilliant move by Microsoft. The first-party clause for making an NFL game has always existed, but nobody has ever wanted to get in the way of the 800 lb gorilla that is Madden (not to mention all the money Sony and MS make off of it regardless as platform holders). That said:

People will still buy Madden on XBO. By the millions every year.

Joe Montana is a perfect representative to start a NFL video game franchise around. John Madden hasn't been involved with the NFL in like a decade or longer since he retired from broadcasting. Millions of players don't even know what he did for the NFL or CBS and only know him as "the videogame guy". Joe Montana isn't a broadcaster or a studio/network guy, he's just a great representative of the sport to young and old alike.

I think EA would be pissed.

They definitely would lose some sales.

If 2K is involved, EA is in trouble. Everyone knows 2K football is superior.

Only problem I have with these rumors is the fact it's Xbox exclusive. It hurts a little knowing it might not come to PS4.

But not pissed enough that they'd just stop making Madden, or even considering not releasing it for 360/XBO. A bump in the road for them, which could even lead to them innovating a bit. I like Madden 15, trust me, it's the best Madden game in years. But it's still MADDEN in every sense of the word. They've rested on their laurels for 10 years now, maybe this news (if it's true) could light a fire under their ass.

I never said they would stop making it for xbone.

But they definitely would lose atleast a good 300-400k of sales. Especially if the game turns out good.

You say John Madden hasn't been involved in the NFL in "like a decade", it's been 2 decades since Joe Montana was.

I'd venture a guess to say that if these rumors are true, it will actually be hurt by the "Joe Montana" label, not helped. If it really wants to seriously compete with Madden, they probably need someone newer.

I can tell you right now if this game is true like the rumors say. It will sell a GOOD amount of consoles if you play madden.

Madden is at the point where every year there should be some drastic increases. The graphics could be 10 fold! Especially for Xbox One/PS4 ea had been slipping.. The game still looks like a up-rezzed 360 madden. Add that to the list of problems this game could fix with its eyes closed that ea refuses to fix.

-Lack of penalties
-Janky animation/engine
-Lack of likenesses
-Minimal improvement on franchise year after year
-Scripted gameplay
-DB/WR interactions animations, just plain terrible and head scratchers 95% of the time.
-No real weather options (only snow, rain, sunny or overcast)
-Commentary consistently SHIT year after year
-Presentation SHIT year after year (Multiple and VARIOUS stats never shown, talked about in game. Halftime show a fucking joke.
-Terrible ball physics, throwing animation in relation to actually throwing the ball is just fucked uo
-Fans in the stadium. Why every fan a 35 year old white or black male? No women no children no inbetween.
-Lack of physical characteristics/animations according to position
-Ratings mean What?
-Zone defense bad
-Man defense bad
-Defense is bad!
-Run blocking bad
-Players seem to lack football IQ.
-Lack of player control

I could go on forever..

Anyone like grains of salt, and taking things with them?

Source, take it or leave it, I have no skin in this, someone just linked to it in a Reddit thread.

plz be true, so glad I got an Xbox one last week, and if the July date is true they will beat Madden to the market.

Myplayer store mode yesss plz, Madden player mode is a joke

An NFL-licensed football game that isn't Madden will sell on virtue of being "Not Madden." EDIT: Not "will sell on a mass scale", but "will sell to the niche crowd that does nothing but bash Madden constantly." If the game is good, obviously it will find a larger crowd - but those people are buying sight unseen, regardless.

There should be competition in the market, it makes better options for everyone around (in theory.)

All that being said, don't take those posts from Operation Sports to mean too much. That place gets a little... crazy... when it comes to anything "OMG NOT MADDEN." It's been that way for years and years there.

Is there really evidence that the NFL/EA deal has some first party clause or is everyone assuming that's the case because that's how the MLB deal was structured?

source? i don't believe that's true

tbh all it needs to do is look prettier than Madden and get onto shelves first and it will shift a decent number of copies if MS get behind it marketing wise.

If they were smart they'd slash 10-15 bucks off the RRP too.

This is what I want to know because this is the first I've ever heard of it with regards to the NFL licence.

A quick Google search hasn't cleared anything up, it pretty much just returns a bunch of forum posts of people claiming that there is such a thing. I assume if it was real we would've seen someone try and take a stab at it.

I love Madden 15 and still play it regularly...but I would definitely buy a new Joe Montana football game AND Madden 16. I don't think the existence of both will necessarily cannibalize sales.

I hope the Xbox stuff is bogus if the game is a reality. That pic of 2K5 that was tweeted, that controller sure looked like a DS4 so I dunno.

If this game is true and on the Xbox One and PC, I will double dip!

If they're making it for Windows 10, and it actually is being published by MS, I hope they would do cross-buy, so you get both versions at once. Would be absolutely fantastic.

Follow the cord of the controller. Looks like it's a third party Playstation 2 controller. Definitely not a DS4. DS4 has the pretty distinct grips with the two types of plastic in it, and the controller in the tweet does not.

Just speculation mostly from what I've read. One thing to point out though - EA has been noticeably more coy about license exclusivity details with this latest contract extension with the NFL.

Looks like they were playing it on a PS2 Slim which would explain the controller but it looks like a crappy 3rd party pad

Definitely not gonna have the NFL license. Can tell by the jersey hes wearing and the fact EA wont come off it. So it would have to be a really fun and accurate sim to convince people to switch over from Madden. I'll bite as well if its not just a madden clone but brings something different to the table

All it needs is a semi-competent online franchise mode and I'll buy it regardless of licence.

Yeah idk when or if it has always been like this but gameloft and others have been making NFL games along with madden on mobile every year.

The situation as I understand it is that EA had exclusive rights, including 1st party, but that deal has expired. It would seem that now anyone can make an NFL game on console. It's just so expensive to acquire the license to begin wih, coupled with development cost and the fact that Madden is so established that nobody has attempted to create a competitor thus far.

I think making a football simulation that relies on communities to create and run their own teams/leagues, and provide robust team/league/player editors can have success, just not at $60. I thought this was 2K's biggest mistake with All Pro. They spent all this money getting all these has-been football players to sign over their likenesses and had to charge full price.

I hope MS is not behind this....being frank, I would rather MS backed 2K for a baseball game even if multiplatform since that's an area of actual need for xbox.

As of 2014, EA had the exclusive license for 'a couple more years'.

MS deal with EA probably lasted 10 years... they made them jettison all their sports franchises :( So this may be the starting point for bring back a good portion of their sports library.

with that said... maybe Microsoft will bring back High Heat Baseball. They bought that game through auction iirc just before that EA Xbox Live nonsense

So many quality games MS knifed from their lineup... RalliSport, Amped, Top Spin... ugh. still pissed

If MS are getting back into the sports arena... perhaps Baseball is next.

If MS really was getting back into making sports games wouldn't a baseball game be the logical starting point instead of a competitor to one of their biggest partners most valuable franchises?

Focusing on their strengths? Who knows, this opportunity presented itself NFL so thats the logical starting point? Who knows

Top Spin was the shit

IF MS was getting back into sports I dont think they would start with a NFL game and immediately tick off their BFF EA.

That post reads a bit like fanboy dribble anyway as well.

Bring this back too

Best baseball game I ever played.

Man...Those were really cool back in the day. Joe Montana 2: Sports Talk was great as well.

I was just thinking: Who made that Sports Talk technology? Some developer had to, right?

I looked it up. Wikipedia says:

Live play-by-play commentary[edit]
Sports Talk Baseball featured Sega's sports talk speech synthesis for running commentary of each in-game play. It was their second game to feature this technology (Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football being the first). In order to produce the running commentary, Sega contracted sports announcer Lon Simmons as well as the vocal reproduction company Electronic Speech Systems to record the unique phrases and play calls for the game.

Blue Sky Software of course did a lot of Sega's sports games, including Montana 2. Looks like they worked with ESS quite a bit:

Even if all we get is an alternate football game without the license, as long as it was good and they make it easy to mod and share mods I think a lot of people would be fine with that.

Having a good PC version of a sports game would be enough of a win.

There is still a big Madden 08 community for pc, if something new comes to pc, there will be plenty of support.

why can't there be a football game that let you design your own plays? If they are worried about exploits/OP plays then that shows how bad the game engine is. Front Page Sports Football on PC back in the day let you design your own plays, I learned all about football rules from that game.
