Joe Montana Football 16

It doesn't matter if 2K was better or wasn't better. The point is that competition will spur creativity and give us a better product.

Can't imagine a Microsoft published game will have extensive mod support.
I just want a football game that does more than update the rosters year over year. Tired of playing the same old crap from like the Madden 2005 engine! We deserve true next gen!

You're right. Nothing topped NFL Gameday. Too bad they cancelled it.

Not only would I get an XBOne Id probably build a whole new rig to play football on PC if this game delivers.

I want NHL and Madden on PC again.

I know there's no chance for the Show to be on PC, but having EA sports game on PC again would pretty much destroy any need for me to own a Playstation or Xbox ever again.

This would be great. The last NFL 2k game is better than what Madden is today!

Back Breaker and All Pro Football were very promising games that just needed time to develop! Madden has had decades worth of additions, hard to compete right away!

I really liked OG Joe Montana Football too!
Completely agree. I would definitely invest in this.

The irony of all this is that the original Sega Master System Joe Montana Football from 1990 was made by EA .

Then Blue Sky and Farsight took over and it eventually became Prime Time NFL. Then Sega took over the license and and the rest is history...

So I take it that no one has found any proof that a first-party clause actually exists in the contract right?

Unlike in the past, when EA was glad to boast about their exclusive contract, they've gone completely silent this time when it comes time to talking exclusivity. Which makes this all seem even more legit.

Yeah but if there really was some clause in the original contract that allowed for first party NFL games wouldn't we have heard about it by now? I'd imagine Nintendo would have at least considered making their own NFL game since they don't seem to get any love from EA anymore.

How would this work without the NFL license?

The EA NFL license only applies towards multi platform games I believe. Also, the NFL and Microsoft are already pretty cozy with the NFL content on Xbox One. I think Microsoft could have their version of MLB: The Show, only with a far more popular sport.

No this not true...EA has rights to PC and Console NFL games...mobile NFL games are different..or used to be.

The MLB license is the one that allows 1st party versions of the sport.

The $400 billion deal between Microsoft and the NFL wasn't just about tablets. In addition to the Surface being the 'Official Tablet of the NFL' the Xbox One is also the 'Official Console of the NFL'.

EA has had to renew their deal with the NFL since Microsoft made theirs. If there wasn't a clause allowing for first-party licensing (like there was for MLB), it doesn't seem too crazy to think that might have been negotiated into the renewal, given the circumstances. Since the extension of the EA/NFL deal nobody, to my knowledge, has divulged any details. Hell, they wouldn't say anything about it during that is '2K coming back?!?!' drama around E3 last year (aside, of course, from the 'come at us with a game, bro' from that EA Tiburon guy).

Also, I don't think MS would have to worry about EA straight up pulling their games from Xbox/PC. People liken this to the Dreamcast but, during that generation, Sony and MS had a run with their NFL Gameday and NFL Fever series and EA didn't have much to say about that. Dreamcast didn't get EA support just like the WiiU doesn't.

That 'leak' sounds a lot like conjecture/lies. Who knows if MS or the NFL are attached to this game at all. What we do know is: Joe Montana has willingly attached his name to this game. He's done PR for it with this Damon Grow guy. They originally started it out as a FF mobile game/app, but it seems like they've abandoned that (TechCrunch video from 2012 with Joe and Damon showing off their silly app. Notice Joe's references to the monopoly) .

Now they're releasing screenshots/mocap vids that clearly wouldn't fly on mobile. They're talking about sweat pooling, vein dialation, advanced AI, a franchise mode that is the core of their game. They went from "we're making a mobile app!" to "we can't confirm platforms at this time." Still tweeting about monopolies #JoeMontana16 #MoreThanARosterUpdate. They're tweeting cryptic references to 2K that any moron would know only fuels the speculatory fires.

Who the hell knows if MS/2K are involved? To me, that's beside the point. Either these guys are making a relatively large budget, non-mobile football game... Or NFL legend Joe Montana is taking time out of his day to shovel a load of crap in the faces of the fans he's acknowledged to have been hurt by exclusivity. If this game ends up being some low-budget nonsense, it obviously wouldn't be able to compete with Madden and people wouldn't buy the damn game out of spite.

If this has some true Visual Concepts development, especially Dan Stevens and Peter O'Keefe commentary, I am TOTALLY in.

Dan Stevens and Peter O'Keefe commentary would make any sports game GOTF.

Seriously, one of the best parts of the 2k games and something Madden STILL doesn't get right.

No one has any proof that this game exists, period. Just a Reddit post and a Joe Montana tweet from last year.

There are a lot of tweets with animations , mocap recordings and pictures from the studio , so there is a huge chance that this game exists

The other thing is, the NFLPA has its own separate license as well. So regardless of whether or not the NFL has a first party clause in the contract, it also means that the NFLPA also would have had to negotiate a first party clause in the contract (which I'm not sure is even in their interest?). EA has an exclusive license with both from my understanding, and anyone wanting to make an NFL game with NFL players needs to have the license from both organizations (since one doesn't cover the other).

That seems to be pretty far-fetched to me, but crazier things have happened I guess (if somehow EA wasn't able to restrict a first-party clause in the contract).

There were so many things EA introduced and then just abandoned for no real reason. Here are some of the features they touted then just let fade away.

Madden 05

- Create a team
-Team Newspapers (Some were even licensed)

-Stadium Upgrades ( There was even a virtual goal post)
- Assemble a coaching staff (OC,DC,ST) that actually affected the playbook and attributes
-Cheerleaders

Madden 06
-Superstar Mode ( Start by taking the quizlet, doing interviews, signing an agent, movie roles, moving from different apartments, etc.)
-Vision Cone
-Precision Passes

Madden 07
-Ability to control an offensive lineman or lead blocker
- College pro days and combine scouting
- Player roles
- The option to choose your preseason opponents.

Madden 08
-Hit Stick 2.0 (tackle the legs or upper body by flicking the stick up or down)
-NFL combine ( 40yd dash, bench press, position drills)
- Live weather updates powered by the Weather Channel
-Playing field would get muddy if playing in rain or snow
- ESPN radio updates and live ticker
- Create a Superbowl ring
-Al Michaels and John Madden were dropped as announcers in favor of a generic radio announcer

Seriously you hit the nail on the head. I have pet go all these things to see them brought back up is a travesty. Their idea to remove things is just so mind-boggling to me.

Vision cone could have been a really nice idea with a bit of fine tuning.

Would be cool if they were dynamic. So for a QB who has a tendency to stare down receivers, their cone would start to narrow if you didn't look around the field. While QBs with great vision could have their cones expand if given enough time by the protection.

only if it brings back the "original sports talk football" announcer.

That guy was badass in that game then in sports talk baseball....

It didn't make sense when guys like Peyton had enormous FOVs. I get he is awesome but cmon.

Well, for him since he's a timing based quarterback that would make sense. He isn't going to rollout to get someone open.

Where now, Russell Wilson in that system would probably have half of Peyton's cone but it's made up for in his ability to scramble and get people open.

It would have been nice to have a real progression system instead. There should be a window in each route where the receiver is most likely to catch the ball and the QB is most likely to throw a good pass. Check the 1st route, 2nd route, 3rd route. then have a scramble rating for the QB and WR/TE/RB to determine how good a QB throws when a play breaks down (Wilson would be 99) and how open receivers can get when a route ends (Megatron would be a 99).

That's in the game now. The receiver icons are faded out and are solid when they are "open". It's a very subtle feature.

If this is indeed a thing I wonder why they went with Montana?

Obviously a legend and possibly GOAT but would a younger more relevant/current player not have been a better choice for the demographic MS targets?
