This death hurts.

"The most important thing we can do is inspire young minds and to advance the kind of science, math and technology education that will help youngsters take us to the next phase of space travel." - John Glenn

What a wonderful life. Hope his family and friends find some semblance of peace in knowing how well spent his time and how full his life was.

A hero and a fine fine character. RIP, Col. Glenn.

Man, What The Fuck 2016??? This year can't be over soon enough.

RIP John Glenn. :(

Did a research assignment on his life and achievements in high school, he was an extraordinary man. My primary pick for "the life of notable achievers" seminars we held.

Fuck 2016

So sick of this dismissive, gross rhetoric. You think that's appropriate input in a thread regarding his death? To say tell some arbitrary measurement of time to get fucked?

Yeah man, I can't wait for when 2016 ends and celebrities/good people stop dying. Gaf is the only place I see this strange viewpoint, that the year is either somehow at fault or that the future will be better after New Years.

When you think of great sci-fi heroes, you think of Solo, Kirk, Picard, Rogers, Gordon; but John Glenn was doing it for real.

Sci-fi refers to Science Fiction so obviously John Glenn is not even in the ranks of those fake heroes. Science Non-Fiction maybe...

Damn, RIP. His sections in When We Left Earth are amazing.

Beyond everything else, he seemed to be a very decent man whilst others in the Mercury program weren't exactly model citizens.

They weren't selected for their moral conformity. I'll take someone who cheats on his wife but can drive the damn spaceship, thanks.

As an Ohioan kid, I really looked up to this space man for what he showed that humanity (and Ohio) could do. RIP

Vintage Space channel on YouTube/PopSci did a great summary of his accomplishmentsGod Speed John Glenn: a Unique American Hero.

Knew most of that info, but one thing I didn't know: dude's Apollo flight was in a rocket that had a 50-50 chance of killing him. I knew it wasn't great odds, but I never imagined it would be that bad.

Holy damn, it takes guts to be an astronaut, especially in the early days when your chances of dying were a bunch higher.

If we're measuring a man I'll take both, and that's what John Glenn represented.
