I'd never actually heard his show or anything, but I'll certainly miss hearing Peel sessions from new bands. Hope somebody tries to fill the gap.

I can't believe this he was like the most diverse Radio DJ ever he really did play all styles.
It will be a great loss to radio as no one can replace what he did for unsigned bands :( ..

^

Some of my favorite songs by bands are the "Peel Sessions" versions of songs.

I'm absoultely gutted. I grew up listerning to John Peel and he was without one of the most important influences on British music over the last 40 years. He loved all types of music and always pused new and exciting forms. I'm so going to miss the festive 50.
RIP.

Now how are we going to hear about Marvelboys excting new album on the Crustic Cow Calamity label ???

He was the nations subversive distant uncle ...

Jesus am I gutted over this. He had a voice that was warm and you just knew you could trust, and damn if he didn't promote good original music, sans pop-of-the-moment crap. RIP John Peel.

Just saw on the Channel 4 news that he met with a friend a few weeks ago - Peel looked rough and claimed his move to a 1am slot was "killing" him. As if this news wasn't sad enough :(

John Peel was born in Heswall near Chester in 1939 and after completing his military service in Britain in 1962, went to Texas and began working for WRR radio in Dallas. For the next three years he moved to various radio stations in America, among them KOMA in Oklahoma City and KMEN outside Los Angeles. He returned to Britain in 1967 and joined Radio London with the celebrated show The Perfumed Garden.

John was with Radio 1 from the beginning in 1967, establishing himself with the late night programme Top Gear. John was the first DJ to give exposure to punk, reggae and hip-hop, long before they crossed over into the mainstream. Almost anyone who is anyone in the world of music has recorded a session for Peel. John added a new string to his bow when in 1998 he became the presenter of a new magazine programme called Home Truths on Radio 4. The programme reflected on the trials, tribulations and delights of family life. He and it became firm favourites with the audience.

John regularly topped music paper Best DJ polls. In 1998 John was awarded an OBE. In 2002 he received the industry's highest accolade, when he was awarded the Sony Gold marking his outstanding contribution to radio over 35 years of broadcasting. John was awarded a host of Honorary Degrees - MA (University of East Anglia) Doctorates (Polytechnic University of East Anglia and Sheffield Hallam University), Hon. Degrees (Liverpool University, Open University, Portsmouth University, Bradford University) and a Fellowship (John Moores University Liverpool).

He most recently hosted his show on Radio 1 three nights a week and Home Truths on Radio 4.

I've only heard of these "Peel Sessions" from various artists, so I don't know what they sound like. Given the responses here, it looks like the music community lost another important person. :(

Are they on CDs or is there a place to download them? I'd love to hear The Cure's "peel sessions" of "Killing an Arab" and "Fire in Cairo".

Trail of Dead did an awesome set of Peel sessions back when Source Tags came out. They did Invocation, Baudelaire, Another Morning Stoner, and Richter Scale Madness. That version of Another Morning Stoner is awesome.

The John Peel Sessions were all released on CD. I've heard a bit of the Cure's early one and it was pretty good, but i'm no huge Cure fan.

The sessions took place live and in studio. It's amazing how many of these recordings sound better than the originals, imo.

Super Furry Animals just did a fantastic session on his show like two weeks ago. He was a really, really great DJ and always came across as a really open-minded and nice man.

Amen.

Such a shame. I always loved picking up Peel Sessions for many of my fav bands.

Saw the news this morning over here. Very gutted.

Peel played a massive part in my childhood/teen/early twenty (basically, until i left the UK) music listening habits.

The festive 100 was fantstic, the sessions were awesome, and you hear stuff you'd never hear on pretty much any radio station on his shows....

RIP John Peel. :(

Kinda sad that cunts like Chris Moyles and Johnny Vaugn get the prime-time slots.

Argh, what a loss. Gotta agree that the Smith's Peel sessions disc is allmost better than their debut.

Love the Buzzcock's session, too.

... that man is a talentless cunt.

there is nothing funny about him, or good about him, at all.

What's wrong with him (I don't live in the UK - I am out of the loop).

Isn't there another guy - Nick Hartford or something like that?

Annoying in joke wankery a la the bad days of chris evens, spends too long talking utter shite, then plays mostly shite music.

His tv show was painful.

I don't live in the UK either anymore, but Moyles was the last DJ fad person who annoyed this shit out of me.

Chris has done well in the latest figures, gained a significant amount of listeners where others have lost. He's not funny, his "crew" are responsible for most of the laughs.

The UK lost it's Godfather of Music, there will never be another DJ quite like John Peel.

John Peel was 90% of the reason I got into the music business - his shows were pretty much the only place to hear some of the more eccentric & extreme bands, ask many musicians and crew in the UK and they will say the same thing.

First time I ever heard a Pixies song was on JP, thinking of the other bands I love I cannot think of many from the late 80's - early 90's that I didn't first hear on John's shows.

I am never usually affected by celebrity deaths, there are many many people that die each day, however I would not be doing what I do today if it wasn't for John Peel and because of that I feel gutted by his passing.

I'll fly the faders, crank the volume up & and raise a glass to you when I work tomorrow John, and my prayers are with Sheila and your family and friends, you will be missed.

RIP to one of the only guys to play hardcore techno in drive-time radio and one of the first true genre-hopping techno whores.
