Meh. Guy's had some of his greatest performances in this decade. Jack Sparrow (at least in the first film), Agent Sands, Rochester (from The Libertine), J.M. Barrie (from Finding Neverland). All excellent and very different from each other, as well as most roles Depp has ever done. And again, look at his upcoming filmography. With the exception of Alice in Wonderland, it's filled with more serious, "straight" roles.

Burton, Disney and Pirates fangirls messed with Depp's indie-superstar reputation that he cultivated during the 90s, but he'll gain it back.

i don't deny that he's an immensely talented guy, and i love him. but he's fallen into a pattern in which he has failed to surprise me in anything since his first turn as sparrow in p.o.t.c. (which was, admittedly, very impressive at first, but after the second film the act got old).

i'm sure he'll come out on the other side of it. i just hate to see him slumming, doing the same wacky-jack act, or doing relatively safe serious roles.

I don't really disagree with you. I also think that he's been mostly on auto-pilot for the past few years, but he still churned out some memorable and strong performances in that span, by virtue of the fact (for lack of a better word) that he's indeed very talented. He hasn't been gifted with the greatest scripts this decade, but he's generally made the most of it and usually elevates both the material and the movie that he's in. I don't think that's an overstatement at all, either, as the likes of Pirates, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and The Libertine have shown (among others).

I have faith that we'll see great stuff from him in the likes of Public Enemies, Rum Diary and Shantaram. Those are similar to the types of roles he used to play back in the day, and yet also different and layered with more depth and complexity. They should highlight his maturity as an actor beautifully.

I'm also hoping he goes for broke and truly gives us something spectacular as the Mad Hatter. Even in his craziest and quirkiest roles, Depp never truly went off like, say, Ledger as the Joker. And I think he's very capable of that sort of insane transformation.

Only problem. They say it's 3D.

Now, is that 3D as in IMAX live action 3D?

Or 3D as in CGI Pixar/Dreamworks 3D?

Or 3D as in Nightmare Before Christmas/James and the Giant Peach 3D?

Also, with Depp and Tim's history, it makes me wonder what role he actually would have had in the original Batman had they met a couple years earlier. Seriously. To me it seems the only reason Depp wasn't actually in Batman is because Tim hadn't met him yet. Makes you think.

I would hope it would be Claymation/stop motion ala Nightmere Before Christmas in 3D, but I doubt something as big as this would go down that route.

Johnny Depp is badass as hell; he's one of my favorite actors working today.

That said, I DEFINITELY wouldn't mind seeing him quiet down for a little while and do some more serious stuff. I like quirky Depp, don't get me wrong, but he's awesome in Finding Neverland and I want to see more characters like that in his repertoire.

I wouldn't have a problem with him doing a few more quirky characters, mind, but I just don't want to see him do that for every movie.

Also, I'm probably the only Gaffers that would love to see a Jack Sparrow-centered Pirates 4 (and one of the few Gaffers that thinks Pirates 3 is all kinds of awesome).

Regarding this specific movie, I'm interested if he's actually allowed to be batshit insane and absolutely unchained; if he's reined in and made to be Wonka-esque: not interested.

Screw the haters!

A Burton Wonderland has amazing potential. I get visions of American McGee's Alice just thinking of how twisted Burton could make the movie.

As for the OP...... you deserve a medal.
And then 40 lashings.

New Alice....

Australian Mia Wasikowska will play Alice.

Does it matter what the people look like if it's going to be 3D? Personally I think I'd rather it be live action. Especially since Disney and 3D conjures up images of their horrible CGI Pixar-wannabe's.

So does this mean Disney's run out of ideas and is going back and redoing their old cartoons as CGI?

God... stay the fuck away from Aladdin.
