Why do people keep giving Burton more franchises to ruin?!

So how many movies has Depp done with Tim Burton now?

Feels like every fucking one of them...

Five movies, which is a tiny part of both of their filmographies (especially Depp, who has a lot of films to his name), and that's stretched out over nearly 15 years. People need to settle down. This kind of thing happens with directors and actors who feel they gel.

Look at Scorcese and DiCaprio. The next two Scorcese movies star him, as the three previous Scorcese movies did, and one of them has Leo playing Teddy Roosevelt. Depp's casting as the Mad Hatter, by comparison, seems to make a lot more sense. I think DiCaprio's a great actor when he doesn't try to stretch himself too far.

And he always makes the same fucking wide-open eyes "Surprised" expression.

lol

This world has gone batshit insane when people start claiming that Depp's performances are all too similar. Especially if there are complaints about his eyes being wide open when he's surprised.

Depp is overrated anyways. And Burton stinks 95% of the time, so they can have eachother.

lies.

the mad hatter would be an awesome choice of a batman villain... i think the story of him and of the clock king were among the best..

I actually felt sympathy for those two..

Six movies actually, this will be the seventh.

I just can't see anyone taking Depp seriously. Its almost like he's been typecast as the de facto Hollywood loon/wackjob. Call me when he does something to prove otherwise. Off the top of my head the most recent noncrazied role that comes to mind is Donnie Brasco.

Basically he would suck in the Nolanverse. Good luck with Alice, though.

Finding Neverland in 2004? He got nominated for an Oscar for the performance, and that was a pretty straight and very low-key and nuanced role. Certainly a wild divergence from the likes of Captain Sparrow and Sweeney Todd.

Still, that would be one performance out of how many? I haven't seen that film so my bad. The point being that I don't think he would fit at all with the Nolanverse but I guess thats a moot point.

You can never really tell. Peeps were saying the same thing about Heath Ledger, and look how that turned out!

Depp has enough range to play subtle and serious and do it very well. I know people think he's become overexposed in the past few years, because of the Pirates and Burton films (and I don't necessarily disagree), but his filmography from now on is looking really awesome.

His next movie has him playing the real-life bank robber John Dillinger, alongside Christian Bale, and directed by Michael Mann. That isn't gonna be a goofy performance. He's also doing the Rum Diary, which is going to be fucking awesome, and Shantaram, another very serious role. The next couple of years are gonna show people what Depp is really all about, bank it.

I like Depp well enough, and like some of Burton's stuff. I just happen to think that Depp in general gets too much praise/hype when there are better actors out there, and Burton misses a lot more than he hits for me.

Well, you arent that alone. I've gotten a bit tired of his "one trick pony" directorial style. Its all starting to look the same at this point.

You can watch the first 5 seconds of a trailer for one of his films and tell its his just by the background. And this isn't in the good way--it's in the getting-stale, everything-looks-the-same way. He's even reached a point where he can't use new actors; he sticks to the same 2-3 main roles every time.

I loved Sweeney Todd too. Thats why I threw the 95% of the time precursor in there ;) Todd and Sleepy Hollow are the two Burton films I enjoy.

So you didn't enjoy Big Fish?? Madness..

I like a majority of his work. The low points for me were Corpse Bride, Big Fish, and Planet of the Apes. Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman & Returns, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd are the high points for me. Although I did enjoy Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Wow, Burton did a lot more than I thought he did.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure? Planet of the Apes? I didn't realize he did Big Fish, either, and I guess I just kind of forgot about Sleepy Hollow.

Though this does explain why I love Pee Wee's Big Adventure so much. :D

Solo you are no fan of Ed Wood? I am far from a Burton fan but Ed Wood was easily in my top 10 of the 90's.

I am not. Like I said, I really done jive with most of Burton's stuff.

Martin Landau rocked in the movie, though.

Blasphemy! (about Ed Wood, not Landau, of course)

What did you think of Big Fish? And what do you think is Depp's best performance? If you answer the second question with something like "Platoon, since he barely had any screen time", we're gonna have to start boxing. With brass knuckles.

I'm glad Bale has replaced Depp as the universal straight guy answer to "if you HAD to sleep with one guy, who would it be?"

Im probably the only Gaffer excited for Public Enemies, not because of Depp or Bale, but because of Mann.

It's the combination of those particular three that excites me, not any one component. Three of my favorite actors and directors in the industry, all working together for the first time, and with an excellent premise for a film.

already been said, but: so, so tired of wacky johnny depp.

i miss donnie brasco/nick of time/what's eating gilbert grape johnny depp

Exactly. This is really what I meant with my "overrated" remarks. Depp does have a ton of talent when he wants to use it, but it feels like hes been sleepwalking through token quircky roles for over a decade now.

Meh. Guy's had some of his greatest performances in this decade. Jack Sparrow (at least in the first film), Agent Sands, Rochester (from The Libertine), J.M. Barrie (from Finding Neverland). All excellent and very different from each other, as well as most roles Depp has ever done. And again, look at his upcoming filmography. With the exception of Alice in Wonderland, it's filled with more serious, "straight" roles.

Burton, Disney and Pirates fangirls messed with Depp's indie-superstar reputation that he cultivated during the 90s, but he'll gain it back.

Tim Burton, stop ruining the source material and get back to something original. Or just stop altogether. Plzkthx.
