You have not been keeping up with current events. He fucked it up even worse. Basically as I remember, he appealed the sentence. The appeal process takes six months, during that time you are kept in a detention centre that is worse conditions than actual prison in Korea. He could then add more time to his sentence as two other judges are involved that could lengthen the very light six month sentence he got.

Btw, part of his sentence was adding him to Korea's sex offender registry, and in America if you get registered as a SO somewhere that the USA recognises to have fair justice, you have to register in America as well.

And it's almost certainly going to extend his time in prison. From what I understand the place he stays on appeal is worse than the prison with labor. He's going to be sleeping on a mat on the floor next to toilet he and a bunch of other dudes share. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
