Well, amazingly bad, that is.

Anyway, SoA DC's numbers were at 106,042 last. Nothing else to note except Sonic Heroes bumped up to #7, pushing NBA 2K3 PS2 to #8.

What? You're stealing Sega's only million seller in the last 2 years? NOOOOO

This is Sega-published stuff. I would include GBA numbers if I had full totals, but even then, there'd be about 3 games because most are under THQ.

teh shame... Sega's first million seller of this gen and they won't even get credit for it. :(

Why should they?

They more than likely weren't the driving force behind making ESPN2K5 a success. I'd love to hear one day who had a bigger influence on the price and advertising for the game: Sega or Take Two.

I didn't even know Puyo Pop Fever was out and I was looking forward to the game.

Whatever happened to Sega's advertising? I remember seeing lots of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle commercials, but haven't seen much for anything else since.

I don't agree with Anihawks stance (take two is not on the box of ESPN NFL 2k5, but Segac cleary is, not to mention it's a co publishing deal), so somebody else will just have to keep track of all the other Sega games and related published by others.

It's the same setup as Sega's "co-publishing" deals with THQ and Atlus on GBA and Nokia on N-Gage, they're really just distributors... though NPD ranks the games with them.

Umm, Anihawk is going by the official publisher listing by the NPD. ESPN 2k5 games are listed as TTWO games and are referred to as such by Wedbush, et al. They're no longer "Sega" games for all intents and purposes.

LOL

So it was the Sega Curse that killed 2K games sales!

EB didn't have Puyo Pop, and after a quick computer search, they couldn't find a nearby EB that stocked it. I was under the impression that it didn't ship yet.

I'm ready to buy Puyo Pop Fever, Sega! Make it readily available and watch your sales climb to 448 copies sold.

$20

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle also dropped in price which should help it to a million before the end of the year.

Damn. I wonder why Super Monkey Ball is doing so much better then (it's been outselling SMB 2 on a 10-1 ratio for the last few months).

Yep, that shouldn't be happening anytime soon now, however.

I think the partnership with Take Two was a result of Sega(Sammy?) deciding to go all out with a price drop. With a move like that, they'd need to ensure a sales increase and increased distribution over previous years, hence the publishing agreement with the number 1 distributor of budget titles in Globalstar. The actual publisher of this game is listed as Sega/Globalstar.

From the press release announcing the deal

""The ESPN Videogames titles, developed and marketed by California-based Visual Concepts Entertainment, Inc., a subsidiary of SEGA Corporation, will be co-published under the Sega/Global Star Software label. Under the terms of the worldwide agreement, Take-Two will be the exclusive distributor of ESPN videogames while SEGA will provide development infrastructure and marketing support.

"The combined efforts and resources of SEGA and Take-Two will create an exciting and powerful partnership that will heighten the level of aggressive competition in the sports game segment," said Hisao Oguchi, Representative Director and President of SEGA Corporation."

"We believe this exclusive relationship with Sega is an exceptional opportunity for Take-Two," said Paul Eibeler, Take-Two President. "We have tremendous respect for the critically acclaimed properties Visual Concepts have created and are confident Take-Two's distribution resources will be able to fully support the products."

Advertising costs money, and to get money they need to sell games... it's a vicious cycle.

Because once SMB went PC they started shipping out big numbers of it after having pretty much no new stock for a year or so. SMB2 just went PC a few weeks ago and now is also re-stocked so it should see a bit of a boost. Hopefully Viewtiful Joe will as well now that is also officially PC.

The only place I've ever seen PPF for sale is at Wal-Mart, and we all know that's not NPD turf.

Also of note is that someone rented it from Hollywood Video, so thats...well...uh...

Anyway.

I'm still at a loss on why Sega doesn't get credit for the ESPN sales... didn't Square get credit for everyhting they put out on the PSOne?

If you want, you can compile a list with F-Zero GX, Shenmue II, PSOI&II Xbox, and the ESPN games, and post them in this thread every time. Sega made them, someone else published them. If Sega didn't publish them, they don't go on the main chart. That's how it goes.

AniHawk, do you think it's possible for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle to outsell the first Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast?

EA was a co-publisher and exclusive distributor of Square games between 1998 and 2003 under the Square-EA label. Take Two is a co-publisher and exclusive distributor of ESPN Videogames under the Sega-Globalstar label.

I think it's a glaring omission that ESPN 2k5 isn't counted in that list. The fact is that Sega funded the game and their name and involvement with the title is mostly what drives the title's success, IMO. They got the ESPN license for their sports titles; their subsidiary developed the title; they should get credit.

ZILLION

Member
That's how co-publishing works. Sega needed wider distribution for their sports titles and this arrangement gives them that. You wouldn't expect another publisher to help out if they didn't get any credit whatsoever, would you? Even though the upside financially for Take Two is low they get to crow about their marketshare increasing and SOJ gets to crow about the game selling well.

If Matrix Online does well Sega will be the one benefitting in their marketshare % despite WB and Monolith handling the development and marketing. It goes both ways.
