Just bought Destiny....newbie tips please!

Oh wow. I didn't realize they removed that with their early December patch. That completely stinks for those who have absolutely no interest in PvP.

I'll have to coax myself to play it again eventually for some new exotic bounties, but yeah, it's a real drag since Bungie themselves had previously touted that material trading gave players flexibility and allowed you to get the rewards you want no matter what kind of activities you preferred.

My tips:

Start grinding resources as soon as you enter the planet in story mode. Seriously spend 10 hours on each planet grinding these:

Earth>>>>Spinmetal
Moon>>>>Filaments
Venus>>>>Spirit Bloom
Mars>>>>Relic Iron

Don't worry about story mode at all because you'll complete the missions one or another through strikes or daily missions.

Do the daily and weekly missions.

Level up through free roam and do it as quickly as possible. The game gets easier the more you level up and receive new weapons.

Finally, understand that this game is all about grinding so if you feel uncomfortable with a lot of grinding then return it. I'm telling you this sooner rather than later in case you find this grind isn't for you.

Return it.
Yes I thought this as my first response ha ha XD

Largely though I would recommend keeping a large selection of different guns on hand in different elements as they matter for taking down shields, especially on the Wizard enemies on some strikes.

Other than that to get the best weapons and armour it's finding out what planet has what materials for upgrading to progress the furthest, it's a huge grind though.

PS: ignore everything that Lik and Figa have to say! They are Warlock hating Hunter racists! Opinion is invalid of inferiour class users :ppppp

Trolllololoooolololool <3

I think it's a really enjoyable, but flawed game.

And nothing beats a hunter with a decent scout rifle, fact.

You see this? This is what defines Destiny community and reason why OT thrives as thr most active and fastest growing OT Thread in GAF's history?

On top of LFG and tips sharing, games community has grown in to joyfuly tight kinted group of folks, it is games soul for many of us.

Being part of it is a great experience, nevermind other good things about the game.

Well first of all, materials are now purchasable for a few crucible marks so certainly don't waste any time farming for them.

My tip would be simply to pick up a bunch of bounties and let them dictate your activities. You'll strike, story and PvP your way up to your late 20's, which is where the real game beings.

It's nice to see that all the drive-by shit-posting about the game will no longer be tolerated. Perhaps one day we will be able to have a thread about Destiny that is not endless bickering about the quality of the game.

I really have no idea why people still feel the need to relentlessly troll the game after nearly 4 months. Get over it.

All that is unnecesary these days because you can get a ton of resources just by doing daily missions and the patrol mission bounties.

Glimmer is the new grinding goal.

Joking is saying something funny, the first page had no amusement to make me laugh at any of the commentators that got banned

Most were repeat cyclical posts that have plagued Destiny since it's arrival
Amazing how these same posters would grind their agenda of drive-by posts on mentioning things that relate nothing to the discussion at hand

Well when you see mods do the same thing from time to time its double standards.

Its just the testiment of game's staying power. Majority of games that have been released around same time have fallen in to obscurity and people have moved on, hell same can be said about many games post Destiny release.

These people were hating on it from day one, saying that it wont last and bla bla, what is worst is that they recruited many followers over the time as well, thus they swing by every destiny thread to shit on it (OT is exeption because its auto-ban zone).

Sadeest part that they wont relent, once DLC 2 comes out shit storm will continue and so on.

Well when you see mods do the same thing from time to time its double standards.

Mods get called out to, heck mods can be de-modded if severe enough.

Besides the drive by shit posting isn't a new thing for anything Destiny related, occasionally mods end up editing thread titles highlighting zero tolerance if the same topic ends up with the same consistant types of responses.

The grind was so brutal during the early going when the loot caves were active. I found glimmer kind of useless because of weapon drops. I made a good amount of coin storing higher level 20 weapons in the vault and trading them for glimmer.

When I was at the glimmer cap I was storing all the +200 glimmer items that you get as drops in the bank.

Pretty sure I burned through all 38 of them during Xur's first visit after the DLC.

Still trying to recover.

I opened this thread expecting this to be the first response and for that poster to be subsequently banned
So long as "hater hivemnd" posts follow suit as well, everyone will be free of double standards.

But beginners, do bounties ASAP, and grind on those Vangard marks like no tomorrow. That's the real Destiny step one. Get that up to level 3. Everything else comes second.

No reason to discuss the hate further in this thread, we should just be dropping nuggets of knowledge

Outside of the fact that this is GAF and people come here to escape gamefaqs type posting styles?

Because they derail every single thread about the game, how many times do you go into a thread about a game you don't like, just to shit on it?

You can't do that stuff here, that's why people get banned, and hopefully the Juniors that take their place come with better conversation skills.

Because drive-by posting is a bannable offense.

Lots of good advice in this thread already, here are mine, from a pve-only perspective.

Leveling 1-20:
-All classes are fun, pick whichever one you seem to like best. A Gentleman plays a Warlock.
-don't do missions over your level unless you have to. The damage penalty will slow down your progress.
-do bounties, good xp and they'll keep you over the level of your story missions.

Post 20:
-specific activities will give you currency, called marks (vanguard marks for pve and crucible marks for PvP). Daily missions, weekly missions, strike playlists, random events during patrols, and PvP.
They can be used to buy legendary gear, which is the most reliable way to level up.
-These activities, as well as the bounties, will give you reputation with either the vanguard (pve) faction and the crucible faction. You need a certain level of reputation to access to the store items.
-if you like the game, keep whatever legendary armor you get that isn't for your class, and make alts! They become a lot faster to level, and let you do weekly/raids multiple times per week.
-don't hesitate to ask for help on the OT.

I just broke 300 hours. 308! The game has issues, sure, but the core shooting mechanics are great.

One thing I haven't seen posted is, if you like the PvP, grind beyond your first few levels there, be over-leveled for the campaign, set it to hard, and get more XP from the story.

You don't need to grind that stuff as much, but do you just realize you told the guy to GRIND for 40hrs collecting shit?

Don't listen to the people who say just get to 20 as quick as possible... that first 20 was some of the most fun I had with the game.. as the mid-20 grind sucks balls. I didn't ever raid, so I guess I missed the end game fun.. but that first 20 was hella fun.

I don't think it's really necessary to grind materials. Anytime that I was just wondering in the world I would pick them up as I passed by them and I've never been short of upgrading anything because of the materials. Heck, they're even sold in the tower.

I also recommend OP to finish the campaign just for the sake of it. It's really nothing special and you'll probably end it with an expression of 'what' in your face But at least try it.

And also see if you enjoy it. I for one love the game, But it is definitely not for everyone and I think it's safe to say that if you level up to the max a character and didn't enjoy what you did that much, the game is not for you.

So since I've already hit level 3 with the Vanguard I should be wearing the cloak of a different faction? Will I still get gifts from the gift robot every time I ding a new level with the other faction?

Enjoy OP, ignore the haters. Please don't be shy about joining us in the OT (friendliest on GAF) and add me on PSN if you'd like. Always down to play with new people.

And I hate to see people banned but enough is enough. Glad GAF doesn't tolerate that kind of nonsense.

I'm going to be honest when I say that I don't think Destiny is a good game, but if you can no longer get a refund on it you might as well play it until you're bored of it. On the way to the end of the story your first time through its moderately fun even without a story to speak of. Your first time defending Dinklebot against waves of mobs in every mission is thrilling. There's fun to be had during your initial play through.

It's when you reach the story's end and are faced with the awful grind for the low chance of better gear that you can decide when you want to quit. By then you will probably have gotten 10-15 solid hours of fun out of Destiny which is not bad at all for a modern shooter in terms of value.

Some people being banned for having a joke?

Why?

There is a difference between jesting and trolling. If you don't like the game that's fine, but then why are you even posting in a thread where the OP has purchased the game is asking for tips on how to play? Coming into the thread, having no intention of contributing to the OP's question is the definition of derailing/threadshitting/trolling. At least IMO. Haven't brushed up on the ToS since my Junior days of getting banned lol.

Edit: And responding to this is kind of derailing but I think it's important to nip stuff like this in the bud to make the Gaf community better. Gaf has a higher standard for it's members. Doing what the posters did has no place here. They can go to Gamefaqs, 4chan, or Reddit for that.

Bro... I mean.. Come on really? We had a mass banning in this thread, and it's like you want to dance the line. Some people don't get bored and still enjoy the game. This thread is not about 'you will get bored' it's about tips to get better at playing.

Destiny is a massive grind fest (like many other games), but the artstyle and the gameplay are SO GOOD on top of being a Coop heaven with friends or even randoms that if it clicks on you, good luck to stop playing it. This game will be active for a very long time despite its flaws.

Many good advices on this thread otherwise.

So I've only had time to play to around level 3. Seems cool so far. Good gunplay as many here suggested. I guess time will tell if it stays cool. So far so good though
early days and all that
Thanks for the continued tips/advice. It's not going unnoticed :)

The grind was so brutal during the early going when the loot caves were active. I found glimmer kind of useless because of weapon drops. I made a good amount of coin storing higher level 20 weapons in the vault and trading them for glimmer.

Trust me I was there with you about glimmer being the most pathetic currency in the game, along with vanguard and crucible marks, but since the update in November planet materials are ridiculously easy to get in bulk but glimmer has now been my only bottleneck since.

Try everything. There is an activity for every mood. It's great to play for a quick 20 minutes. It's good to invest hours in getting the raid down. There is something good for everyone. And whatever you are doing you are progressing something.

And thank fuck for the bans finally.

My advice is that you shouldn't go in with too high expectations content wise. When it comes to weapons and armor, there isn't much advice to give since it mostly depends on luck. Take what you get is pretty much all you can do. If you go into the game serious about finding weapons, you will just end up angry since you can't really control drops. Also, the game is much more fun to play when you play it with others. Play the game passively rather than actively is probably the best advice. You should find another game to focus on and use Destiny as sort of a break. If you focus on just Destiny, you're going to end up frustrated and it will be like banging your head against a wall repeatedly in order to get a weapon/armor drop. It's a game where you can't control the outcome.

So basically your advice is that he should get as much value out of it because he'll end up disliking the game as much as you do. It's a good thing you're looking out for those who bought it and are unable to refund it. Where would we be if opinions were able to deviate from your own?

A lot of the recommendations on how to play destiny read like reasons not to play it, lol. I really enjoyed destiny up until level 20, then the "grindy" aspects of the game kicked in and that's what turned me off.

So my advice would be to enjoy the ride until level 20. First time through all of the content was pretty awesome, especially the strikes- they were a blast. Don't worry about the post-20 "endgame" stuff until later, then decide if it's a turn off once you start getting into it. I ran out of steam at level 27.

Best advice I can give is to work those vanguard bounties and get your rep up as quickly as possible to buy better stuff. Hope you enjoy it op.

As someone who put in over 350 hrs I will say try and limit your play time. Don't invest heavily in the game as your time will not be rewarded and most of your effort will easily be over written or made redundant by the next weird decision introduced in the latest patch or DLC. Accept and understand that much of the best loot is obtained by luck and not skill. Pick one set of (legendary) gear per character and only upgrade that as all of it will become sub par eventually so again, do not get too invested in it. Accept that there is little or no variety in the game and that you will literally be playing the same missions over and over again with the same enemies spawning in the same positions at the same times and behaving in the exact same ways. If you obtain the best gear you will also look exactly the same as every other player in the game who has achieved similar (besides the token exotic piece perhaps). Use LFG to find people to quickly do weeklies and raids with (even though you might never interact with these people beyond that single event eg. my friends list went from 40 to >200 yet most of those people were only ever once in the same fireteam as myself). The only things people tend to care about in LFG is usually your level, the weapons you have and how experienced you are at competing the raid - the ironic part being the first two are luck based and the last one you can lie about anyway.

The best time I had playing the game was actually while smack talking with actual friends and just mindlessly navigating through patrols or doing crucible bounties etc. Well that and when I was trying, and succeeding somewhat, to teach a literal bunch of ± 12 yr olds, who i had teamed up with via lfg, how to run the VoG raid for the first time. The rest of the time the game was mostly a chore since my friends had moved on and i found myself completing events, bounties etc. by my lonesome more and more.

I'm the first to critique Destiny.

But it's fun. If you like the type of games that involve you gearing up, you'll like it alot. Gameplay is solid. I sunk around...200-300 hours into it but then stopped. Was it worth my $150? Definitely was. But I'm waiting for Destiny 2.

As for tips...save the resources you get, never use them for the commendations. Turn in alot of Bounties because eventually you'll get an Exotic bounty(I'm sure there's a counter for it, but if you turn all of them in you increase your chances.). Use the Destiny OT to find a raid, they're a helpful bunch!

And remember, go Titan.

That first page graveyard, oh my.

Just the tips for the OP:

Play the story and focus on getting to level 20
Then pick a faction and focus on bounties to get to and buy armor to get to 26
The game opens up at 26 with Raids and weekly events, RNGesus gets more forgiving.
Once you get one class to 20, it makes it easy and quick to get 2 more of the same class there. Swap in armor and items between to do multiple raids, weeklies, ect. Save a few things from 15/20/26 character to help on the way up.

I wondered why so many members on the first page were banned.

Here's the easier tip I can offer

- play the story
- reach level 20
- while you're reaching level 20, pick up some fun easy bounties
- choose a faction (hopefully you're vanguard or crucible reputation will be good)
- buy legendary gear/weapons
- use marks to buy materials
- farm materials and while doing public events
- hit level 31
- complete dailies
- complete weekly
- complete nightfall
- play vault of glass regular with friends
- play vault of glass hard with hard core friends
- play crotas end with friends

If you want to be all hard core, do the Eris bounties but I don't see the point cause the next expansion/update is unknown. Reason why I didn't care for level 30 until Bungie patched the game first week December to allow 31 gear. I don't care for the radiant shards or energy. Raid gear from VoG and exotics still hold up imo.
