Just got an A/V Famicom...

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
My coworker recently came back from Asia (Shanghai, HK, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo)... before leaving, he asked me if there was anything he could bring back for me when he went to Akihabara (he loves games/anime as well)... I mentioned it would be cool if he picked up a Famicom - I own FF1j-3j on cart and would be interested in playing them on the actual console. So, he came back with an A/V Famicom (not the oldskool one, the one that looks like our top-loading NES). Now I've heard rumors that the voltage on the Famicoms are incompatible with US power outlets? Do I have to worry (I've seriously never bought a system from Japan before)? Also, what are some good Famicom only exclusives that I should look for?

I don't have a Famicom, but the voltage difference shouldn't be a problem (in the US, Europe is another issue). You can get a step-down converter if it worries you. The only problem with voltage I ever had was with a PC Engine suitcase CD-ROM system. CD games would crash whenever I ran it on 115VAC, once I used a converter it ran fine. I've heard the PC Engine CD drive is sensitive to voltage. None of the other Japanese systems I have have ever given me a problem on 115VAC.

As for Famicom exclusives: there were a couple I was planning to get if I ever got a Famicom (or clone) but I can't remember them offhand right now :). I know one was a side-scroller from Tecmo, but the name escapes me right now. Time to fire up the emulator, hehe.
