But does this really count as surprise release now that we know about it? It kind of defeats the purpose. If you announce the album is coming, people are going to watch for it. We know he's working on it. He has already put out a few prototypes to gage the audience. His name is out there once again, so if it (say) was to come out tomorrow, it wouldn't be a surprise.
See, pulling a Bey required a lot of denial for that to even happen. It felt like one huge lie that was turning into a joke. It was completely undocumented until it dropped. No one could find her filming. No on could find and writers, job postings, song credits...nothing. No producers were talking. It was air tight until it dropped. That's what made it work.
Drake's, despite being sort of set up to be a surprise considering the circumstances, worked well in his favor because his audience really wasn't expecting any album from him until a whole other year amid all of Cash Money controversy.
I hope he does come out with an album, but I'm not going to be surprised when it drops. I know it's going to now so yeah. I'll just wait for it.

But it's not a "surprise". We don't know the day, but we do know he has an album. The point of a surprise is to not know about it period. You can't hint towards it. You can't talk about it. You can't even build suspense around it.
Telling someone a surprise is coming is just about setting them up for that eventual "surprise". At this point, it is no different than having an anticipated date that we do know, but we are all holding out for it.
Also, if Drake's album was talked about months ago, by someone else...That doesn't make it any less than a surprise. He never said it. The only thing that really set everyone up for a drake album though, was that he put out 5 songs that kind of lead up to it's pending release. However it's still a surprise considering the circumstances in which cause it to just suddenly released. (Plus wasn't his one intentional, not really something that was planned?)
Pharrell kept reassuring people that Beyonce does have an album, she's just going to release it when ready. That was about a whole 8 months before it's released but everyone thought he was lying because at that point, it was a running joke. People were counting major events since the time Bey "claimed" she was dropping an album. (Also it was even more funny for the media since 4 was a flop and they were expecting something exactly like it)
Even though he said that, it dropped exactly at 12:00AM midnight Friday the 13th 2013, while everyone was sleeping.

Agreed. Boggle me minds. That album is dope. The Yeezus criticism because of the albums angle. But my dark fantasy hate I don't get.
