I agree, they have become somehow puritans, because deep inside this is a religion. They are good, the other side is evil, some categories are basically saints, trans people being at the top for whatever fucking reason. From their point of view, they're defending the oppressed as a category and anything that might be perceived as an attack to the category is seen as evil. And their identity is more important than who they are as a person, so don't misgender a serial rapist.
I think the sex positivity is just a remnant of the old left that was protesting strict gender roles. The only sex-positivity I see right now is basically convincing young girls that showing their butthole online is a legit way of living and it's empowering. Everything else is rules upon rules. Like having to confirm to be exclusive, have to specify consent, say you're poly instead of not wanting to commit. But most of these chronically online, loud people barely have any sex. Their sex positivity is all ideological, even though they keep using the concept of flag and community for a thing that basically specified what kind of people you liked to fuck.
I also think it's not correct to call them leftists anymore, because I have several friends who can go on about Marx for hours and think wokeness is nonsense. The same way conservative doesn't necessarily mean white supremacist nazy. Also, most TERFs skew left as well. They are the feminazi we loved to hate a few years ago.
The key word is used to be. Something happened to the left in the 2010s that and I don't where it came from but they have more in common with the 80s and 90s religious right then they would like to admit. They achieved what social conservatives never could in turning young people into sex negative prudes.

I think making kids change and shower in front of each other in general is a thing we can probably do without, yeah? Like making a trans woman shower in front of men hardly seems like the right solution, but if people are uncomfortable being naked in front of others I think they have that right.

Athletic competition is a whole different issue that I never brought up. I think there's merit to having a ciswomen's category, but the question of what tomdomwith trans athletes is complicated because they're have advantages over women and disadvantages over men and there's so very few of them.
But I do think it's telling that there have been more laws restricting trans participation in sports than there have actual athletes participating in those sports.
And that's the case with a lot of this conversation that makes it so frustrating. The amount of mind share it gets is so wildly out of scale from reality. Conservative pundits will sit there going on and on about trans people say in and day out over isolated anecdotes that could be easily handled without the need to completely disrupt the lives and safety of every trans person.

If any one is getting boners in any dressing room that's not going to be tolerated or accepted. Doesn't matter if it's all men. There's no reason anyone should be treated to a different standard.

This is not a "trans" issue, again rape is a crime that should be prosecuted. Sadly it usually isn't. And if the school was involved in covering it up they should be sued (though reading between the lines of your account I am guessing the student just chose to transfer out or was expelled). This isn't a story about a trans woman getting special treatment, this is exactly what happens most of the time in these cases, sadly.
If you know 10 women, you probably know someone who was raped in high school, and odds are the perpetrator didn't face charges and odds are they did it again. And that is a huge problem and it needs to be addressed but it isn't gonna happen by trying to make believe this is a special problem of transwomen.
It disgusts me too, but the problem is that it either only or especially disgusts you when a trans person is involved. If you showed the same concern for all children who were victimized maybe we could have a sane conversation about how to help that situation overall instead of just a shrieking culture war.
