Katy Perry's debut album, "One of the Boys," is one of the most underrated pop albums

I was browsing Spotify when Katy Perry's new song, Rise, came up. Having been away from the radio recently, I listened to it and got exactly what I've expected from her since her sophomore album: poppy beats, generic lyrics, anthemic whoops and whops. I don't hate that album - California Boys is one of the most awesome guilty pleasures out there - but it's a noticeable step down from her debut album.

This is an opinion I've held for many years, before she started asking if I feel like the thing I put my groceries in (seriously, the hell?). One of the Boys put her on the map for a good reason. A song like I Kissed a Girl is hilariously inappropriate for the radio yet became a huge hit, the synthy heavy pop beat of Hot N Cold is one of my favorites ever, Ur So Gay is unabashedly a song that would never appear on her more PG albums, and Waking Up in Vegas was a pleasant find on it.

If anything stops me from rating it as an all timer, because I seriously thought about it, it's that a lot of the songs follow a similar pattern of one to two minutes of low key singing followed by guitar riffs being most of the chorus. I know that describes a shitton of pop today, but the homogenous nature is quite evident here.

Anyway, can't wait for this thread inevitably to be brought up to ruin my credibility on the gaming side :p

It's far and away better than Teenage Dream, that's for sure. She also has a pretty decent live singing voice.

Also, her debut album was actually a gospel album released under her real name. You can still see a lot of gospels influences in her music, especially lyrically. Especially lately, she's been using a fair bit of religious imagery in her work. Some of her love songs, for instance could double as hymns if you toned them down a touch.

underrated pop is an oxymoron

Nailed it.

I don't think it's underrated. It performed very well and was generally well-liked by listeners. She also got 5 singles from that album released on radio airplay. That's not common for one album.
