I'm going to pretend that we aren't judging these two women physically.

Both are really in the running for this generation's Hepburn, but i think the nod has to go to Portman for at least trying to tackle more challenging roles. Really, it's Ms Knightley's attachment to godawful Bruckheimer trash that's going to hold back her growth as an actress. Portman, on the other hand, was in LEON, at TWELVE. Just that one performance, which she gave so many years before the terrible incidents that are Star Wars, is enough to show that she's had the opportunity to forget more character acting than Knightley has ever learned,

Now, it's true that she's been in a lot of mediocre roles (and movies), but I think that's more a function of her under-utilization than anything. I mean, you might be able to say the same about Kiera, but it's very hard to make that judgment since Kiera is given the exact. same. character. in every film.

I guess the only thing you can really conclude is that both are still very promising actresses, and they both really need some interesting roles that will exercise their likely considerable talents. (did anyone see that terrible looking closer flicK?)

Or how about a violin for all the gaffers that can't get laid and take out their frustration by cutting down attractive women?

Wow, Matlock highjacks another thread with his incredibly poor movie taste! Closer was one the top 10 movies I've seen this year, and you forgot Beautiful Girls, where Portman was great. Oh, and, you don't judge the talent of an actress by the quality of the movies she's in, but by the quality of the performances she gives. I've seen plenty of bad movies where actors were great (and if you thought Closer was mediocre, at least give it the benifit of having incredible acting in it, which almost every human being seems to agree on as being great).

...yuh huh.

Fact: People are MORE critical of how attractive celebrities are. Is that not common knowledge by now?

True. But at the same time celebrity status does often add to a persons appeal, Morgan Webb, for example.

Average guy's league?.. What is the definition of an average guy these days? Antonio Sabato Jr.?

Well, I don't mean "average" in the sense of some pimply faced loser, but average, as in, regular guy.

I mean, I'm not taking anything away from the girl, she's very pretty, but I don't think she's so stunning that you'd have to have model type looks to approach her -- Of course, the fact she is a celebrity puts her out of everyones league.

Only counting films that I have knowledge of, of course. :p

Natalie Portman

good movies
Leon
Heat
Mars Attacks!

mediocre movies
Closer
Garden State
Anywhere But Here

bad movies
Star Wars 1
Star Wars 2
Star Wars 3
Cold Mountain
Where the Heart Is

Kiera Knightley

good movies
Pirates of the Caribbean
Bend it Like Beckham
Love Actually

mediocre movies
King Arthur

bad movies
Star Wars 1

So really, we're looking at Pirates, Bend, and Love against Leon, Heat, and Mars Attacks! However, due to the small (to the point of pointless) role in Mars Attacks, that one has to be dropped.

Pirates, Bend, Love vs. Leon and Heat. About a tie, really...but then. Star Wars 1-3.

Kiera was smart enough to get out of that sinking ship while she had the chance, so that's your tiebreaker right there. KIERA WINS

Leon > Then all the movies Kiera has been in

Natalie Portman is better than Keira Knightly. Keira has that man jaw thing going on and I don't like that. =\
