I'm going to pretend that we aren't judging these two women physically.
Both are really in the running for this generation's Hepburn, but i think the nod has to go to Portman for at least trying to tackle more challenging roles. Really, it's Ms Knightley's attachment to godawful Bruckheimer trash that's going to hold back her growth as an actress. Portman, on the other hand, was in LEON, at TWELVE. Just that one performance, which she gave so many years before the terrible incidents that are Star Wars, is enough to show that she's had the opportunity to forget more character acting than Knightley has ever learned,
Now, it's true that she's been in a lot of mediocre roles (and movies), but I think that's more a function of her under-utilization than anything. I mean, you might be able to say the same about Kiera, but it's very hard to make that judgment since Kiera is given the exact. same. character. in every film.
I guess the only thing you can really conclude is that both are still very promising actresses, and they both really need some interesting roles that will exercise their likely considerable talents. (did anyone see that terrible looking closer flicK?)
