Kessen III - How is it?

So, how did this turn out? I don't think there was ever an 'official' thread, but I know a few people here bought it, and Mrbob was threatening to give his impressions. I know how it compares to the previous games (more action, fewer troops, more dynamic gameflow, DW5's Crowd engine), but how are the action and the strategy? Is there any 'glue' between levels (DW4E style) or is it just level-to-level? The general-customization looks really neat. It sure as hell is pretty, too.

Screens, because I feel like it:

I've been holding off buying this until it lowers in price, but I am looking very forward to playing it.

Well to be honest I just started playing it again after a one month hiatus. :P I played the first five missions or so and then it got put on the backburner due to the March blitz tidal wave that hit.

I'm starting over and getting reacquanted with the game. Give me a week! :D

To answer a couple of your questions, the levels are mission to mission. There is an overall goal but you select your own missions. The cool thing abou the game is that it gives you optional missions. You get a map with your base and you can choose up to three missions to play. One of them will be a main mission that'll advance the story while the other ones are optional missions that you can play to power up your existing characters and find new ones. You get new generals to use at a pretty fast pace as well. Especially if you do the optional missions. Right now I have something like 9 generals at my disposal but can only use up to 5 on a map. It's a balance in trying to find the right main general with support generals.

At the pre battle planning stage, you can usually select two main generals to put at predetermined points on the map and up to one to two support generals. The cool thing about putting archers in the support group is that they can help in the attack with your main force. When you are fighting with your main group you can hit the R2 button to have the support general to order his archers to fire upon the enemy. It works well. Or if you are feeling a little adventurous you can let the cpu handle the main general attacks and switch to your support troops on the fly. That is one aspect I love about the game. You can switch between all the generals on the map whenever you want and take control. But you do have to have a careful eye at times. If you let the CPU do too much on their own they seem to get obliterated. :/

As for additional stratagy, you can't always hit enemies head on one on one ala Dynasty Warriors and win. You need to use some flanking techniques to win battles. Each general has special moves to help turn the tide of battle but you can't do it all on your own with just one general. You really need to use all your generals at their full disposal to win.
