Kickstarter: Divinity: Original Sin 2 [Over, $2 million funded]

The campaign did a lot better while I was sleeping than I expected. I think we should be at 2 million already.

Yep, 1.975m, plus an additional 35k (the last figure they said on the stream) at the very least from Paypal, RPG Codex, and RPG Watch.

I wasn't sure it was going to make 2.0m, but it somehow did. Larian has a very ambitious game to work on. The origin system alone is incredible, assuming it has the scope that they've talked about.

we better get to this 2m, I want that mode sooo bad

SO fucking pumped for this game. If it hits the quality of the first one, but with all these bonuses? oh my lawd, goty material

Just bought 'The Saga continues' Most I've ever spent on a game but I loved D:OS and Larian's update videos are awesome :)

EDIT: Just noticed the stream but geting black screen on Twitch :/

Hope Chris Avellone writing means better writing and conversations.

As RPG, Divinity OS is very dissapointing, yeah, is a great game but it's writing, level design, choice & consequence, and conversation system is awful.

Specially the conversation system, really? hand, paper scisors in conversations in an isometric rpg? T_T

I really don't see what was so wrong with it.

It was different.

So what?

I'm curious how they plan on handling single-player with the origin system and the more elaborate party character interactions. They alluded to a new system, which "you have to see, or you won't believe it", but couldn't show anything just yet.

Or I may have to find a group of like-minded individuals willing to co-op (and a DM?), who are comfortable playing at a very slow pace. Speaking of which, GAF needs a thread to organize co-op RPG campaigns (Infinity Engine, NWN2 modules, etc.) and perhaps some role-playing board games or pen and paper through Tabletop Simulator.

Yeah it's hard to do decent narration in co-op / MP. Blizzard simply gave up and refer to you as singular hero.
It's not really that hard. Just do a regular party-based RPG as usual, and then let the co-op player control half the party.

Of course, Larian want to do a lot more than that, what with co-op dialogue, questing and all.

We have to remember that the dialogue in D:OS originally was going to use a keyword system like the Ultima games and Larian changed it after the Kickstater because of fan feedback, so maybe that's why the writing in D:OS was one of the weak points of the game.

(And wow, the final game looks so much better than the first screenshots)

It certainly explains why the characterizations of the two Source Hunters are really, really thin, but I don't think that it should have any effect to the rest of the writing.

That pic reminds me, I want to see the serious-writing approach for that rope-blockade on the docks of Cyseal.

Sell me on this serious writing thing.

They changed a key mechanic of the game because of Kickstarter feedback?

Not the best design decision.

It's an RPG. Those need to be grimdark. There can only be one way to write video games.

Minsc was totally a serious character. So was Morte. RPGs need to be epic, and humor has no place in epic.

Let's get Lord of the Rings up in here, bro.

One of the best game design things I've ever seen was that tiny chest over a cliff. By the Nine was that brilliant.

Unleashing brilliance like that is more than worth my wallet's weight in gold. (It's less than you'd think...)

Not sure about the KS phase, but the feedback they got during Early Access is a big reason why DOS turned out the way it did; Swen has stated numerous times that the EA feedback was a huge boon to developing the final product.

Swen's postmortem of DOS is most relevant:
Listen to your community, but be aggressive in your triage and remember that game development requires enlightened despotism, not democracy. Communities are diverse and as such you’ll get conflicting opinions. You need a strong core vision to guide you through their feedback, and you need to stick to that vision, no matter how vocal they become. But you do need to listen and recognize the underlying causes of problems being reported. Often communities will complain about the symptoms of something that’s wrong and it’s not always easy to discover what the root cause is.

Listening to feedback is by no means a mistake.

Woah, didn't see this reaching 2m - I'm incredibly interested in the Dungeon Master Mode, but at the same time I'm already at my limit for videogames this month, so I guess I'll sit this one out and see how it turns out at the end.

Well a keyword system would mean that the NPCs are mostly giving monologues to the PCs, mostly full of exposition instead of having a conversation.

Had to reduce my pledge from physical Collectors Edition to just the normal $27, cant afford it this month, so gutted.

Adult mode getting as much traction as it did is proof enough to me that a large chunk of their fans actively want the OS games to be something other than an 80's/early 90's inspired RPG.
Ultima VII was kind of extreme with its violence for its time, though.
(The game had you figure out the cause of really grisly murders)

Still 5 minutes for my dream of the funding surging beyond 2m so much that they abandon democracy and implement all the new skill trees~

Oh well, there's always hope they make it in some kind of post-release content update or expansion(s) I suppose---still great that they hit all the stated goals.
