Kickstarter Thread - 2015 - Making promising projects a reality...again

Thanks More_Badass for including Hollow Knight alongside all these other awesome games!

Super excited for La Mulana 2, though they've recently switched to a 3D engine, which seemed a bit strange. Their original pixel art style was perfect! Not that I'm really complaining. Watching along as these games evolve through their development is half the reason I back them.

Side note that Dysfunctional Systems has been cancelled. A lot of people are rightly bothered by this because from the get go people were very vocal about the art and use of money and when they finally started to listen it gets cancelled with a very similar Echoes of Eternea note about how no one has any idea how to handle money or production schedules and throw themselves a pity party with a sadness pie.

I don't mean to come off asshole-ish about it as I do feel for those who get overwhelmed and suffer from severe depression myself, but this was a game I was REALLY looking forward to so it getting shelved makes me a little sad.

Luckily I've only had like...3 cancelled games out of the 50 something I've kickstarted so I have many more to look forward to.

Also, as far as successful kickstarted really fun games go, I do suggest people give a play of Cavern Kings. It came out so quickly after it succeeded that I was cautious and hesitant about it's quality but god damn is it super fun to play. It also gets regular updates all the time so new stuff is cropping up everywhere.

Backed Into the Stars and Shadowrun recently.

Super psyched for another Shadowrun campaign, HBS can do no wrong at this stage from the way they've improved that game over the years.

Into the Stars looks like the Star Trek game I've always wanted. A bit rough around the edges and it's an upstart studio (and their goal seems suspiciously low) but I'm willing to chip in given how polished the game is looking.

Nothing to currently show of the game running right now as I'm building the base (all placeholders currently) for something based off motorcycle gangs, norse storytelling, strippers, murder, and death games. Think Arcade Action + Carmen Sandiego + Westerado + TBD.

I'm programming it in GameMaker and designing all the art. Here is some of the early character designs and overall look of the game (the second screenshot's style won't be used but the character design is being used, ie prototyping layouts):

I'm hoping to fix a few bugs in my last game I finished Yggdrasil for people to be able to play but it has a similar art style to the one I'm currently working on. Here's a buggy Gif of its intro screen:

That is fucking DOPE dude!

Something about Starr Mazer is rubbing me the wrong way. Hard to explain but it looks like one of those really pretty 2D Kickstarters that is just a collection of GIFs and no actual gameplay. I feel skeptical somehow.

The path they took to make this game is very weird and not really explained on their Kickstarter.

http://killscreendaily.com/articles/starr-mazer-has-always-been-real/

Basically, the video they use for the Kickstarter trailer and gifs is a commercial for a "1991 video game" for a film made 5 years ago by the developer who had wanted to make this game but also wanted to make movies first.

It doesn't seem like they have anything from the actual game they consider presentable yet. This interview from PAX where the developer explains why they're at PAX but only showing the trailer is so weird.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gejdMzYL41E

They seem to have the support of a lot of known people in the indie scene, I seriously doubt it's anything actually scammy, but it definitely would make me doubt it having a smooth development and timely release.

Edit: And here's a post from an old thread about the trailer, bumped by the developer recently:
Hey guys! I'm Don Thacker, the head of Imagos Softworks, the company making Starr Mazer.

I'm super stoked that you guys are interested in Starr Mazer, and would love to answer any questions you might have.

A few quick answers that I know are burning:

  • Starr Mazer is real. It has been real. It was never not real. My film company, Imagos Films, made a feature film called Motivational Growth - a weird little dark comedy fantasy - in which the main character travels into his TV. At one point he actually travels into Starr Mazer. This was not originally part of the script - he was originally written to travel into a Mexican soap opera show - but after putting a feeler out to Jeremie Perin, I realized I could show off something I always wanted to make: Starr Mazer. The game predates the film.
  • Starr Mazer development is already underway. Imagos has invested in the game thus far and is taking to Kickstarter to get the necessary funds to make this game what it is supposed to be. We have an engine prototype and a bunch of playable sections of the game at the time of this writing.
  • Jeremie Perin is supportive of the project, but fully booked at the time of this writing, and has been for some time. Also, he's an animator and amazing filmmaker, and his interests lie in making films. We've hired legendary pixel artist Christina Antoinette Neofotistou to take the helm and grow Jeremie's work, and she has so far done an amazing job. Starr Mazer will look like what you've seen in the video and MORE.
  • The game will be fully voiced by an amazing cast of voice actors, some of whom you know from film and television.
  • The soundtrack is being composed by the one and only Alex Mauer and has a guest artist roster of over 20 contributing musicians including heavy hitters like Manami Matsumae, Jake "Virt" Kaufman and Makeup & Vanity Set
  • The game is targeting PC / Mac / Linux to start, but a highly successful kickstarter could bring it to other consoles with a quickness.

I just recently started playing a game called Overture and it looks like it has a kickstarter as well.

It plays a lot like Binding of Isaac but with the classes and tonnes of enemies on screen, it really feels like Diablo 2.
And it's hard as hell.
Too bad there's only like 28 hours left.. Would've loved for it to jump to 35k for the multiplayer coop goal but eh.. Maybe they'll add it later.

WHAT?????? La Mulana 2 on 3D? Why is there no thread? Depressing.

My first Kickstarter wasn't a game, but definitely game related. It was those HD Component cables for SNES and Sega Genesis. Ended up pledging $90 for both cables and they're due to arrive in July this year. Really exciting stuff, so I'm looking forward to what I can throw money at this year.

Just saw this thread for the first time. This Is the Police looks right up my ally and I backed it.

Gonna totally keep an eye on this thread throughout the year.
