Kickstarter Thread - 2015 - Making promising projects a reality...again

Today is such a weird and awesome day for the RPG folks aiming for the stars between:

Seven Dragon Saga going for $450K

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/537511454/seven-dragon-saga-by-tactical-simulations-interact

Dungeons of Aledorn going for $60K

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1153206899/dungeons-of-aledorn-old-school-hardcore-rpg

Both of these are wildly ambitious, yet each tacking in very different approaches and directions. One has that fear that the high total and how many years it has been poking at it, the other the whole "Unknowns" aiming for an amount that screams Dark Horse Candidate---which is extra weird lately as there's been so many success projects lately that the term's exclusivity and rarity seems inadequate all of a sudden.

2015 is shaping up to be so nuts on KS and the like!

Halcyon was originally planned to hit Kickstarter in April 2014. Back then it looked like this

Well you were right.

In less than 48 hours it climbed nearly $20,000. That is insane. I'm not the biggest kickstarter guy, someone linked this and my interest was piqued.

Still hope they reach the Bear Race goal. :3
Nice! Yeah, the final 48 hours are important. Reminder emails go out, backers increasing their pledges, a boost in exposure as people post on social media and other places

I've seen a few where they just barely pass the funding goal with a hour or less to go

Here's Orion Trail's chart
SuiCLjh.jpg

Yeah, talking with Dave and Evan the last few days of Orion Trail have been a bit of a rollercoaster to say the least. Add Orion Trail to the list of Neverending Nightmares-esque "never say never" Kickstarters. :)

Thanks everyone for helping those guys get funded! They're hoping to definitely at least hit the first stretch goal! The second one for the minigame seems a little too far away... but you never know.

Looks like there's going to be a gameplay teaser for The Last Night shown at Rezzed tonight.

I was on the edge of my seat during the Four Sided Fantasy campaign. I had really wanted that to make it

Just wanted to give a shoutout to Halcyon 6 although it's already fully funded. It was mentioned on a german gaming news site a few days ago and then i saw it in this thread.

I am somewhat proud to say, it's the first kickstarter i ever funded. I must admit, i almost caved with Orion Trail first, but after playing the demo, it just wasn't my cup of tea. This game on the other hand looks like it would take the best of some of my favorite space games like FTL, Startopia, Dungeon of the Endless and countless 4X games and combines them with Star Trek, a huge complexity and a charming artstyle. Their stretchgoals sound awesome as hell, too.
I want all of them :D

Nice! Welcome to the wonderful world of Kickstarter :)

The game that did it for me was Hyper Light Drifter. So far, I've only been burned once (Confederate Express turned out to be a scam, those assholes) but everything else is in development or is playable.

My main guideline is that I only back campaigns that show actual gameplay. Other stuff to consider: Are the goals reasonable for the team size and game scope? Has the developer documented the game's development on social media or a blog or dev diaries, etc.? What's the state of game now?
Besides the Confederate Express debacle, I think those guidelines have helped me make smart decisions on whether a campaign is legit and worth backing

I've backed 6 Indiegogo and Kickstarter projects. The only people that have delivered was an artist that I backed for some new awesome artwork and Yatagarusa... which even still, is in beta, but at least the damn thing is in my hands and damn near fully playable.

I feel pretty safe with Strength of the Sword.

But these...

Hyper Light Drifter
Chasm
A.N.N.E
Project Phoenix

Yeah...

Yeah...
Chasm got a Steam page recently
http://store.steampowered.com/app/312200/
And it's been getting monthly dev updates. Here's the March update
http://steamcommunity.com/games/312200/announcements/detail/204125142568622263
So no need to worry about Chasm

I feel like I've been exceedingly lucky with my Kickstarters pledges so far. Of the 9 successful campaigns I've backed, one turned out to be a scam but all the rest either show regular progress or are playable. Or both. Rain World gets daily updates, Catacomb Kids and Heart & Slash are on Early Access, Noct got picked up by Devolver. That Which Sleeps is coming along nicely. Dex, Olympia Rising, and Four Sided Fantasy are almost finished.

Like you, the only real iffy one IMO would be HLD, but given the scope of the project due to all the stretch goals and crossovers, I'm not surprised by the slow development. But I'm not worried about that game yet

I've seen smaller games take years to complete. For example, the indie metroidvania Environmental Station Alpha has been in development since early 2012. It's finally releasing in April

THE FUCK.
What's so WTF about Gibbous?

Just wanted to give a shoutout to Halcyon 6
Thanks for posting about this game. I decided to back it at the $20 CAD level!

Pillars of Eternity is fully funded now. Hope it turns out well.

I've backed several games that have never come out, and a few that look like they may eventually come out but look way scaled back than what was originally promised, including one that I pledged $100 to and wish I could take it back (not only is it super late but the recent videos they have shown look VERY rough still). With this game having a huge name attached to it, maybe that's a good sign. Trying to be optimistic :)

Not to be rude, but why did you back that one? Like I read through that page and it checks off all the warning signs.

- The video is literally art plus two guys talking
- The page and all the updates are 99% art with some rough concept tech demo footage
- There's little info about the actual game
- The focus is less on the game and more on the tons of ridiculously high stretch goals offering content that probably should be in the base game.

The entire KS page, updates, video is about what they hope and plan to do rather than showing what the game is already and how they want to expand and improve on what already exists.

Compare that to how the games are presented in the Kickstarter pages for Duelyst or Slain

The Duelyst page was full of cut and paste from other successful campaigns. They went and reworded a lot of stuff on the campaign page but you can still see some of it in the tiers (which can't be edited after they're added). It was pretty suspicious looking I thought.
Oh really? I didn't realize. That is pretty scummy. I also read earlier that the devs decided to make the game F2P

So maybe not the best example. But Slain is the kind of campaign that does it right IMO. A video that shows off gameplay. A lot of information and footage (here GIFs) showing off the game and its current status. A reasonable goal and a reasonable outlook of how they plan to improve the game. An active Twitter page and numerous articles demonstrating they've been working on the game. The only confusing thing might be the amount of tiers, and how some are console only, or console and PC, etc.

There are a few kickstarter projects I haven't seen posted here so I'm going to do so.

The first is a visual novel called Regeria Hope. It's already been funded and is in its last 26 hours.

The second is another visual novel called Cursed Sight. It's already been funded and has 17 days left.

The final game is an adventure game called Shadow of Nebula. It has 27 days left in its campaign.

Edit: I found some more games I thought you might want to know about.

Mulaka - Origin Tribes is a 3D Action Adventure game, that has 22 days left.

The 8th Continent has 29 days left.

Rewind is a horror game with 23 days left.

Armed and Gelatinous has 10 days left.

Has anyone checked out the ZRRO Kickstarter lately? I think some funny business might be going on with their funding.

I was lurking around this Kickstarter because I thought it was a hopelessly stupid idea for an Android TV gaming console.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1623845638/zrro-touch-your-tv-from-the-couch/?ref=kicktraq

This project was doing fairly okay initially but the project had some seriously bad luck after the Nvida Shield Android TV console was revealed for the same price they were asking for- $199. The comments have several backers stating that they were canceling their pledge and ordering a Shield instead. Adding to their bad luck, a prototype was lent out to Gizmodo and the verdict wasn't positive.

http://gizmodo.com/the-zrro-hoverpad-is-almost-the-game-controller-i-want-1691360433

Things were not looking good and the project was seeing more money disappearing than was coming in! In fact, it's still losing money today. It might be the first time I've ever seen that happen where a Kickstarter's projected outcome has gone down.

Then something very interesting happened. Between around March 23rd to the 24th, they gained seven (7) new backers. Those backers brought in $49,322 to the project! That's $7,046 each! Just a reminder- the console they're trying to sell is $199.

Currently the project sits at a very comfortable (and awfully convenient) 100% funded with less than a day left.

Tell me this doesn't look suspicious:

Any thoughts?

This is pretty simple. They weren't going to make their goal. They had friends or family (possibly with money given to them by the creators) back the title for as much money as they needed to make sure they'd hit their goal. As other people have given money, the seven faux-backers have been steadily reducing their own pledges (they lose a percentage when it goes through KS, so the less money they run through the system, the better).

A little scummy and technically against Kickstarter ToS, but there's probably no direct way to prove it. Getting zero money when you don't hit your goal makes people pretty desperate.

Y'know, I didn't think about that, that instead of regular people pulling out their money, the faux-backers are reducing their contribution as new backers come in. However, the analytics do say they are actually losing money and backers for sure.

minichart.png

Between the time I inserted that link and previewed the post, the money they lost increased from $139 to $507.

Yeah, I agree, no sure way to prove the faux-backers shenanigans. But it sure is circumstantial as hell. It's so awful. If your $200k project is going to be $50k short, then just let the Kickstarter fail before you really dig yourself too deep.

It looks like the ZRRO team are responding to their sketchy Kickstarter funding:
Creator ZRRO Ltd. 3 minutes ago
@backers, regarding the $10,000 pledges added - those are from companies who are looking to integrate ZRRO's tech into their products. We were contacted by many manufacturers and will make sure to choose only the best to integrate with ZRRO. These contacts are in early stage and under NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) so unfortunately we cannot provide any specific names at this time. This does not change our commitment to the project in any way, and we have already begun finalizing the design and software to enter the manufacturing stage. We are doing everything we can to make ZRRO the best product we can.

Sounds like bull to me. Even if it were true, isn't it against Kickstarter ToS? I remember back when Ouya was doing a promotion where games on KS that committed to releasing on Ouya would get their funding matched by them. Kickstarter pulled a few campaigns because they said it violated ToS.

The backers have also noticed that things look suspicious.

Techno Banana about 2 hours ago
@creators, I'll give you guys another 12 hours or so to clarify our (all backers) concerns. Otherwise unfortunately at this time I'll be abandoning ship.
Maybe I'll pick it up in store one day.
Good luck.

Marv 2 days ago
Well, I pledged down to a dollar, only to stay informed. Suspicions about this project seem warranted.

Kayz Ruan 2 days ago
Okay. I'm out. Good luck with the project. I will get one when it fully supports other console box. This project is so suspicious, and the questions are not fully answered with confusing explain. I have seen you responses to me and others, not so clear and professional.

Roland 4 days ago
Six anonymous "Android Box Manufacturers" have together pledged suddenly 60,000 dollars while early birds are flocking away... what is wrong with this picture?

Ouch. The funding campaign isn't even over yet and things are already looking bad.

To my knowledge, you CANNOT reduce or cancel your pledge if it means putting the Kickstarter below its funding target.

I was suspicious of that ZRRO project when it was first posted about here. The concept makes no sense. The part of the pitch is a controller that you don't touch, but instead it senses your fingers hovering above the screen. Right?

What? That's ridiculous. One of the biggest complaints with touch screen game is the lack of feedback. Why would anyone want to use a device that provides even less feedback?

Am I understanding that properly?

To my knowledge, you CANNOT reduce or cancel your pledge if it means putting the Kickstarter below its funding target.
This whole thing feels like a scam.
