Kid Chameleon remembrance (appreciation?) topic

This topic isn't going to turn out as good as I envisioned it turning out because despite playing the SHIT out of this game, I only have vague memories of it, for some reason. I remember one of the powerups was a Jason-type character that could throw axes (pictured above), and he was always one of my favorites. The hoverboard dude also rocked.

I swear to god it was one of those games where like... I wouldn't even have CLOSE to the patience for it now (it gets hard as shit and just keeps going, going and GOING, like plenty of other games from the era), but I see now in this map that the level that always killed me was actually the 2nd to last. If only I'd had this at the time... I was always so close:

The Final Marathon was impossible, I swear to god. There was the spike wall that would chase you, and it would catch me in like 9 seconds, before I even had a chance to gain on it. Looking at these level names is really bringing back a lot more vivid memories that I had forgotten all about, though :D :D :D

Under Skull Mountain :lol :lol ...its all coming back to me.

Reading up on the game now, I'm seeing over and over that it was known for being incredibly difficult. Makes me proud that I made it to the 2nd to last level. Lord knows I played it enough!

Sorry for the stream-of-conciousness topic... I just keep remembering a lot more as I google the game :)

I'm not even sure the game is all that good. In fact I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't. All I know is that for whatever reason I LOOOVED it as a kid.

"...DIE!"

God I love this game. My brother and I played the hell out of it. I loved the Axe Murderer helmet.

This game was a bastard-a total bastard. A few friends and I use to play this thing for hours on end during summer vacations. I know we didn't come close to beating it. The level I always died on would be the stage with the skyscrapers. I can't even break down what killed me in that level anymore because its been years and my memory of the game is shot nowdays. But this was one hell of an underated game in the 16 bit era. Around my group of gaming friends I'd bet you anything you'll get quite a spicy conversation going in regards to this game. Many a controller was broken over this game, yet we loved coming back for more every time. Those godamn long jumps over the lava areas was so intense. If I remember correctly the game was pretty friendly in that it was easy to stock up on tons of lives early in the game. But then you would eventually hit that wall of extreme difficulty and soon you were loosing lives far too often. Didn't those bastrds actually put a timer in the stages,Jesus like the damn jumps and enemies that chased you weren't enough, fuuuuuck. :lol

Yaknow-it'd be lovely to grab an old GameGenie and just beat this game once and for all. Because I have no where near the gaming skill(z) I had in my youth, those days are totally gone. The game deserves the finger for unleasing such an addicted hell on me. :D

Great game, and probably the most hardcore platformer ever made. Never finished it...probably got to the city tile set area before moving on to other games. At the time, I had wished for password or battery backup... The game was too long for its own good, I figured...and I have no idea how long it takes to finish without cheating.

Man, this game is really fucking good!

I never have a Mega Drive, but I went in a landlord named "Kid Game" to play and I passed hours amusing me.

This week I go to try shape in 3D (using the Blender) the KK' Character. :)

I loved platformers back in the day (well, that's all there really was, but anyway) and I was pretty good at them. But this game handed me ass time and time again. It was so fucking long and hard and frustrating. Though I never thought it was a bad game. It deserves all the respect it can get.

This is such a classic. I would actually like some sort of remake, possibly retaining the 2D platforming viewpoint but give it a next gen flair.

For some reason, when I think of this game, I think of Ecco the Dolphin to. Two very legendary (in my head) video games.

I friggin' hated Kid Chameleon when I was little. Bane of my childhood. The fucking game never ended! It somehow ended up under my mom's car tire. Sad story really.

BAD ART

Seriously, that's why I never played it. The game was fugly then and is fugly now. It looks like it's in EGA.

I'll check out the video to see what I'm missing.

Edit: Yuck, it's looks insanely hard and exacting. No thanks.

Despite its seeming European tendencies, the credits show the developers to be Sega Technical Institute (SoA). I didn't know they were around in 1992. Mark Cerny is credited.

Oh god, now you've done it. Looking at the map I can't remember anything past Hoverboard Beach. As already said it seemed like the game never ended. Back in the day though the game was great. I briefly played it on my PSP where it plays good but I didn't have the patience for it. Now that you've posted the map, I might have to give it another look ...

Man, this game was absolutely amazing... well actually it had its share of problems. But I've always loved the changing helmet system, it always offered variety (and I liked how each helmet you picked up had a different "riff" when you got it). Game was very varied in terms of levels, and I thought that shish-kebab boss was awesome looking too for the time. Never really made it too far, like somewhere halfway through it, I think to a skyscraper part or an ice part, my memory is hazy. Need to pick up a copy and try again, or play on an emulator with save states.

Very fun game, it's a damn shame you don't see this kind of creativity and nail-biting challenge rolled into one anymore...

I loved this, I remember thinking what the hell, but then hours went by and then I was playing it every day. Just an awesome title, they should put that on XBLA
