Cable has been dying for decades now. I bet in general broadcast TV has lost half their audience. The decline is masked by the fact that boomers will never stop watching TV but generations after them have either cut the cord or have raised their children entirely without the cord.

Parents don't rely on live TV anymore, there kids need entertainment at all times without interruption on demand. This is where streaming basically has taken over, parents just put on any movie or show for their kid when needed. TV stations like Nick and such just are relics in this day and age when parents control completely when and what the kids get to watch now. Instead of having to put there kid in front of a TV at specific times or when their preferred show is on, they can now have it ready to go streaming

Comics have always been niche since I was born. Because cartoon shows took rise and replaced them. The rise of the internet provided free scans (or paid scans).

Children shows aren't dying, just moving to different platforms. Channels are dying because they can't compete with the infinitely better streaming services.

Also pirating is super accessible and easy now and I'm sure parents cut costs anywhere they can.

Kids shows these days are garbage, so I'm not surprised. We started watching the old Moomin cartoons from the 90s with our kid, and it's just remarkable how different that is to modern kids shows.

It's slow, calm, takes it's time. Spends time on trivial things that means very little to the story, but a lot to establishing who the characters are. Best of all, it's got great stories. Even as parents we enjoy watching it.

Contrast that to modern cartoons which are just loud, hyperactive horseshit where everyone is competing to be the most obnoxious.

No wonder kids these days get medicated for adhd. That's the way TV teaches them to behave.

YouTube did this. My neice, kid cousins, and nephew don't watch tv. Just YouTube all the time.

My niece is odd. She knows everything about dragon ball. All the characters. All the lore. Its because she watches a bunch of YouTube videos discussing db. Her dad and I tried to get her to watch the show. She hated it. Couldn't last an entire episode.

Kids these days need a constant barrage of hyper stimulation. If they're not getting it then they become bored. I can't imagine what their thoughts are like.

Yeah kids these days are just 90s kids without any of the context, living vicariously through the nostalgia of millennials and early zoomer content creators on YouTube

They know all the shit about DBZ, Pokemon, Anime in general, Spongebob, Simpsons etc. Or anything that has had a meme moment. But they've never actually watched these shows

I've been slowly building up a collection of good old cartoons for my son to watch when he's older.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (from the 80s/90s)
Duck Tales
Ahh Real Monsters
Batman, the Animated Series
Spiderman the Animate Series
Simpsons seasons 1 - 8 or 9ish
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog /Sonic SatAM

Gotta add some The Real Ghostbusters, Rescue Rangers and G1 Transformers in there too.

Couple months ago I was watching some old G1 episodes and family came over. My 7 year old niece and 4 year old nephew are hooked. Ended up getting the latest Siege and Earthrise toys as the homage to G1 is excellent and they're enjoying them. Hell, it's kinda like reliving my childhood when they have their toys and I'm with them.

Back in the 90s and 2000s, is wasn't uncommon for kids to still have Nickelodeon or Disney channel in their viewing rotation until they're around 14 or 15. Today? Most kids completely abandon children's programing by the age of 11, in favor of more adult shows, so the audience for children's programing is much smaller today as well.

Quite true. Today's shows are targeting younger audiences too so they don't appeal to teens at all. Other factor is ofcourse streaming. I got Disney plus and many of top viewed shows were cartoons.

That's pretty spot on. it seems like a lot of newer "kid's" shows are actually intended more for autistic manbabies or the woke crowd. Also a lot of them are just garbage. Loud, annoying, with dumb songs and terrible cheap computer animation. Not to mention all of the ads -- not only in the commercial breaks but in the shows themselves.

Thankfully my kid doesn't have any interest in the newer shows. His favorite right now is Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends from the early 80s.

My younger kids love Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly but also watch Disney Channel shows like Big City Greens and Amphibia. Weekday mornings while getting ready we have Disney Channel on with Puppy Dog Pals playing, on the weekend my 7yo daughter will likely be watching either Disney+ or youtube on the tv. They do watch a lot of youtube, but it's mostly Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly, and other shorts. They of course love watching crap like Ryan's World too. My 4yo has been really into Ghostbusters lately, so I started him on The Real Ghostbusters and he loves it. Nickelodeon has been blocked ever since their 17 minutes of silence, or whatever the hell they did several years ago.

My kids spend more time watching older cartoons then the new ones. My son will watch the old DuckTales for hours if I let him, but he can't stick with one episode of the rebooted version. I think Cyberpunkd is right. The target audience for the new shows is the writers themselves, it's not for kids anymore.

If you have young children, they should only watch the YouTube Kids app which is filtered. There's some mediocre content but at least it's not inappropriate.

Here in the UK the BBC still produces great shows for children, which educate too. My daughter knows the names of the planets just from watching Hey Duggee.
