Killer Instinct coming to Xbox One

Cross counter live starting early tonight, 7:30 - 8 pacific.

Should hopefully be a pretty good look at the game.

Damn. I'll totally buy this game so hard with wild 90s abandon five years from now; when MS releases the DRM free, Kinect-optional Xbone Slim.

Edit: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Free to play? Nice try. Get out of here with this trash. Do it MK style and do it right, or don't do it at all.

You can buy the full game normally. Maybe update the thread title or something to help clear up the misconception?

In particular a few rather important notes were made, the first thing mentioned was that there was a small misconception with the game being free-to-play. While the game is a launch title for the Xbox One, fans will be able to purchase the full game on it's release. There will also be a demo which comes with Jago as playable character where you can play all of the game's modes including online mutliplayer.

If you decided after playing the demo that you liked the game, you can selectively purchase packages which feature various characters.

So has anyone who played this game confirmed that it actually has the old KI combo system in it? IE doing a motion like back forward kick + punch will give you a pre programmed 4-5 hit combo that doesn't necessaraly have anything to do with the buttons you pressed (hard to articulate, but KI fans know what im talking about)?

so you don't have to watch a 30 minute vid: Instead of a set button after a move, any button goes into the next part of the combo. To go with that, there are 3 breakers-- LP+LK, MP+MK, FP+FK. One of those works corresponding with what your opponent pressed. Rock, paper, scissors. Guess wrong and a "X" pops over your head and...I forget exactly what that meant. Take more hit stun or damage?

I think the developer is getting a little bad rap around this game," Spencer said. "We found a developer who really cares about the game. They're building a great game at 60 frames per second.

Phil Spencer said:
Obviously, multiplayer is pretty core to what the game is right now, but when you think about asynchronous matchmaking, and I don't know if it really came across [during Microsoft's media briefing], but while you're playing your match, your next fight is being set up. So, you're literally just carousel-ing from fight to fight. A fighting game, given its round-based nature and how long the rounds are, is a great opportunity to showcase the asynchronous matchmaking.

Sure, but it's still not the feature-rich experience I want. There's no hope for robust single-player modes in a fighter built to be stipped down and sold in chunks as DLC.

I know, SP modes in fighting games is not teh hardcore. I'm an entitled casual fan of the genre, spoiled by the PS2 era. But a stripped-down XBLA title with bare-bones content (plus training modes!!!!) is much less exciting to me than a nostalgia-fueled cheese-fest, chock full of joyful crap like the MK reboot.

On the plus side, it sounds like it plays well.

Damn, max is glowing about the game. Stuff like that and he F2P stuff being cleared up has me pretty hype for this.

Killer Instinct is like the epitome of the 90s to me. I remember having blister on my thumbs as a kid from playing this game so much.

It feels weird that a new one is being made.

Really great interview/demo from Gamespot:
http://www.gamespot.com/e3/killer-instinct-6409830/

The developers seems like they really care about the community. They kept reiterating that during the interview and wanting feedback even if its people saying it sucks.

Also, yeah. Update the thread title so people know its not just F2P. They're taking a very smart approach with the full game and a F2P model to get more people interested.

Streaming Killer Instinct with some of the Devs on twitch.tv/crosscountertv They're answering questions in the chat and going over some gameplay mechanics

Here is a match I recorded earlier today.

Didn't get to play the game myself unfortunately, I'm definitely going to play it tomorrow. Looks really good in person graphically, not really a fan of the character design.
Awesome vid bro. At first I was like who is that old man playing. Then when he turned around to shake hands i realized it was Ken Lobb of nintendo/rare fame. If this guy is involved in anyway i have much more hope, that this game will be great. It also looks much better watching people play it, than it looked on stage. Wow.

Here's the archive of the KI stream earlier. This game is looking damn fun, and while talking through everything it seems like the team is really up on fighting game knowledge.

Watch at 32:05 specifically. Great sound design.

The game is absolutely insane, especially when combos start racking up.

I was sceptical about DH handling this, but you can tell they are approaching the series with respect and have gone out of their way to get familiar with fan favourites like Third Strike etc.

Between Max's comments and the nigh universal acclaim this seems to be getting on floor, I may need to find a way to afford XB1 after all.

Fuck MS for buying Rare and doing...this.

You're making a big assumption that the Rare of today could make a better Killer Instinct than DH.

That looks fucking great to me.

I was just about to post this, great video.

Seems like most people had doubts about the game until they actually played it. I think the different purchase models is a good idea, because it opens up the player base.

I am a huge fighting game fan of about mid-level proficiency, and I am super hyped for this.

But does anyone feel like the announcer and the art direction is heavily borrowing from Street Fighter 4?

It's pretty obvious if you ask me. Seems the team is playing it safe all around which is great.

Yeah pretty much. Didn't Max also say the devs were quite open in admitting they borrowed liberally from SF4 and others?

I'm OK with this.

Looks like MS has forced my hand :]

I liked the dark and gritty look of the original game though. That voice that said KILLER INSTINCT when you booted up the game was so good, I was so scared as a kid ;_;

And I remember my parents were all like JAMES WE SHOULDN'T LET YOU PLAY THIS, IT'S A BLACK CARTRIDGE FOR A REASON.

The memories ;_;

The very interesting part about that interview was that they mentioned people working on it from Skullgirls, Weaponlord and the original SF2T and SSF2.

James "DJames" Goddard", creator of Weaponlord and who worked at Capcom USA on SF2T and SSF2 has an "unannounced Xbox One title" on his resume. I think it's safe to say he's working on this and that's a pretty awesome pick up (And the fact that it's a brand new team under the Double Helix umbrella).

I was skeptical because Double Helix but nearly every single bit of news that comes out is actually making me very, very hype for this. If Microsoft drop their dumb policies, I'm lining up for a One on launch night.

Doesn't matter how positive the reactions are, I can't support MS stance on their DRM. If it was Virtua Fighter(My main fighter)I still won't support such a thing. Imagine running tourny's?? It come be a nightmare. The fact you have to log the Kinect with you is a pain.

Not sure if it will mean anything in the future but they're trying to work around it seems.

6:40 mark. max talks about it being in tourneys.

Looks like crap.

I'm a huge KI fan and that looks like shit. It looks like a SFIV knockoff in terms of art direction, I don't like the sound effects, and Jago's ultra is the same as KI2. Maybe it's early, but no impressed so far at all.

EDIT: I'll watch that long video posted above and see if I change my mind at all.

Hmmmm, will see. For the sake of the developers. They're very passionate about this project and it will be a disservice if somehow this game won't run well at tournaments. They mentioned the Kinect, but no DRM talk....Anyway, good luck to DH. Even if I don't like the game :)

Crap, alright. Only every single person who has tried the game has said otherwise. The amount of downplaying going on is tiring. They've stated the game's more like KI than KI2. Also, they've clearly looked at other modern fighting games and taken a lot of elements from them to make the game relevant. Most of the moves from early KI games are there, only their implementation has been tweaked to make the gameplay far more fluid than the original games ever were.

It's pre alpha and it's already light years beyond the old games. The sound is great, especially how the music follows the hits during an Ultra.

Awesome interview thanks. Getting more excited for this game by the hour!

3.00 mark talk about the music. Robin Beanland involved, music is done by guy who did Dead Space & Need for Speed, and Robin gives feedback on the different character themes.

I'm skeptical that they will be able to find much of a solution for tournaments. If their solution isn't something that applies to small events, and only bigger events like Evo, Final Round, etc, then people aren't really going to play it at the bigger events either.

One of the devs said tournaments will not be an issue.
