Killer Instinct coming to Xbox One

I am pretty sure a retail version is confirmed, just not for launch. Honestly the game (or a part of it) will be available to everyone for free if you plug your internet cable in - that's far more important and clever to boot.

A retail version has never been confirmed. Only digital. I'm all for the digital version and the way it's being set up, but I believe people should have the option to purchase a physical version too if they so desire.

I think the gaming model for this game is perfect. Max talked about it in one of his videos and I do think it brings the opportunity for newcomers to try out the game without the need to spend $60 on the whole thing. I myself as a complete "noob" to the genre of fighting games have a hard time. I feel overwhelmed by the complete selection of characters and I always find myself just playing with one or two fighters.

Having said, what I do think DH and MS should do is keep a fair price value for the price of characters. They can release a full physical retail version of the game when the roster starts to grow.

A petition has been formed in an attempt to convince Microsoft and Double Helix that a retail version of Killer Instinct is important. I encourage you all to sign it and support the cause. Let's make this happen, GAF! :)

Pointless.

There will be a retail release eventually, but definitely not at launch, there won't be enough content. They will wait a year, then release with 20+ characters.

I can't see Thunder being a grappler at all. I mained him in KI1 and he had zero grappling moves. He had a controllable fireball, an AA, a slash move, and a diving attack. If anything, based on that moveset I'd put him in the balanced category. Probably more rushdown than zoning.

If DH just said "f*ck it" and imported the movesets from KI1, every character would slot into the "Rushdown/Balance" category.

One of the worst parts of KI was that Rare tried to balance the roster by giving every character the same tools. Thunder only had the phoenix projectile because everybody had a projectile or ranged attack. Honestly, I think the only time I used his fireball was to tag someone coming down from a juggle state. For me, Thunder was all about spinning through the other guy's fireballs and getting in close.

I think a lot of people hear "Grappler" and immediately picture Zangief...but that kind of grappling won't work in KI; we have to think of things in a much broader way. A grappling Thunder would still be primarily rushdown and would likely have a moveset very similar to the one you remember, sans projectile. Giving him a couple utility command throws and a throw-range buffing Instinct Mode would go a long way to making Thunder a more interesting character.

Also, Thunder makes sense as a grappler simply because it's already in his DNA. Rare was never shy about the fact that they cribbed a lot of their roster from other games; if you removed Thunder's projectile, he was essentially T.Hawk from SSF2. (<--Dat Anti-Air Sammamish!)

It's been hinted at before during a panel with Ken Lobb I believe.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I remember, they weren't going to have one at launch. They were hinting at releasing one next year and it would also contain the characters/stages that are coming post-launch.

I imagine what they'll have is the game come out for $40 on launch day, and then have $20 Season Pass for all of the new characters/stages for the next year. They'll then release a disc version in the fall/holiday 2014 that contains the launch + Season Pass content.

But what would be wrong in having a disc based version day one and sell a season pass along with it to those who are interested? That's what was done with Injustice. I think Killer Instinct would benefit from that same approach, at a reduced price though ($30-$40?) due to lack of content. Nothing would change with their current digital plans. People would still be able to purchase their characters individually or buy it all digitally if that's their preference.

The point here is to give people options. Many still prefer physical media over digital, so it should happen to aid in getting the game into even more players' hands.

I think it really depends on what we get as day one content and how much they're planning to charge for it. If we end up with 6 characters and a $20 game, that shouldn't be a retail release. If we get 12 characters and a $40 game, then I could potentially see a retail option on day one, but I'd still buy digital.

It's a strategic move on Microsoft's end, not a misconception of what fans want. Your petition could get ten thousand signatures and it still wouldn't make a difference unless every one of them actually boycotts the game. Almost none of them actually will.

Publishers & devs want us to go digital as soon as possible because retailer mark-ups are ridiculous and trade-ins are cannibalizing their sales. KI is there to start warming us up to the idea of buying bigger, retail quality games online. A much-hyped, online fighter is a pretty good place to start nudging digital distribution along. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Titanfall goes digital only as well.

From a consumer standpoint, the only reasonable, objective benefit to a disk release is the ability to re-sell and that is precisely what Microsoft (and every publisher) wants to kill with fire.

Don't have reliable internet? Well, you'll have to go online at launch somehow and unless you're hosting house tournaments every night, your KI experience is going to be severely handicapped right out of the gate anyway.

Worried about the Microsoft account servers going down eventually? If this actually happens before your X1 breaks down, something has gone very wrong -- aliens, zombies, general apocalypse type stuff -- and you should probably worry about that instead.

Everything else is just personal preference and with the clock slowly winding down on physical media, people should start adjusting anyway.

This. It hasn't been confirmed or denied. I think it's safe to assume there will be one at some point.

Im very eager to see how the FG community receives this game, especially being exclusive to a new console. How many fighting game fans could possibly be ready to drop $600 to play this?

Hey fella's just recorded a half an hour interview with Mick Gordon talking exclusively about the sound design for Killer Instinct on Xbox one. He loved Killer Instinct growing up so he's really REALLY passionate about doing the music. We cover a lot of cool things:

- Inspiration behind the music and sound design,
- Reveals the first bit about the character stories,
- Thunder will be unveiled at Gamescom as well as the next tease for the next character
- Other very interesting tidbits about KI.

It'll go live tomorrow and I'll post it here and a new thread.

If we only get 6 characters I'm going to be pretty bummed.

Yeah. Considering he only ever appeared in one game and how long ago it was I don't think it would hurt to change his moveset. He can probably copy something from SNK/ASW grapplers.

There's more to people's preference for physical than just the ability to resell games but that discussion is for another thread.
Anyways, yeah, it wouldn't make sense for a retail release at launch, as it's becoming more and more obvious that the cast will be less than 10 at launch.

oh god the KI logo now comes with sound effects, hnnnnnnnnnnnngitsgreat

also, since he is teasing thunder/eagle a little more directly, i reckon its 1-3 days we will see him, they did say before gamescom!

When I spoke to Mick yesterday, he's starting the music for a new female character and we should hear the first sound bits for a "familiar" female character soon. They're apparently taking a slightly different route with her this time a bit different from her cheerleader days :D

Why bring back Killer Instinct?

There were a couple of things. We wanted to pick a game that we had the passion to build. We had the internal team with Rare creative people - there were certain people that I wanted to make sure were close to this experience to make sure it's tried and true. People ask me about Rare and I always go back to, like, Battletoads, but there aren't many people from those games that are still around.

We had a core of people that still understood what Killer Instinct was about. We thought some of the features of Xbox One, like asynchronous matchmaking where while I'm actually fighting it's setting up my next game, made a great mechanic for a fighting game. I won't say the things on Twitter had no impact on it, I wanted to bring back something and Killer Instinct just seemed like the right thing.

There are a lot of fighting games out there. Will this compete?

We are building this to be a great fighting game. This is not some hacked-off remake. We're working with Mad Catz on control, we've got Rare people looking at it. We've got people focusing on how it's going to play because we want to build a great fighting game built for a live ecosystem. This isn't going to cash in on the name; it's going to be a real frontline game that people fall in love with.

Hmm, what does that mean, I wonder...

Sorry to quote this again, but I wanted to state how much credit Mick's work deserves for me to actually to be more excited to hear this interview than to see the new character reveal. I truly can't wait to hear the full soundtrack when the game is out!

just started listening to this podcast, his enthusiasm is insane!

also, nice to hear him confirm that the music for ultras per character, note wise will sound different. so jagos on jagos stage sounds normal, but jagos ultra on glacius stage will probably sound alien

amazing!

additionally, seems to confirm it is thunder, not eagle :P

A new video of Max and a 118 hit ULTRA:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLEsh2ZZ-70

Looking at that Ultra, he could've actually added in a few more hits. Too bad you won't see much of this at tournaments. Although I guess once the max Ultra for everyone is figured out, it won't really be as hype.

I hope the tease for the next character is more than what we got for Thunder. It doesn't have to be a full combo video or anything, but I'd at least like to know what the next character looks like.

Giraffe? KI related?

https://vine.co/v/hhaKJITazlP

Sounds a little too mellow compared to everything else so far.

I've loved all the music so far, but that guitar needs to go. End of story. Hope that isn't part of the actual track.

Cheerleader has to mean Orchid. No other existing KI female would fit that... unless you maybe count Kim Wu's hair...? o_0 A bit of a stretch.

Oh yeah and certain cyborg character theme music is very very metal / industrial :)

We're posting the interview soon, just uploading it!

Will the interview has samples of those themes at all, or is this just what he told you?

additionally, seems to confirm it is thunder, not eagle :P

He's just trying to throw us off. It's Eagle... #BELIEVE

(I will continue this Eagle push until Gamescom when it's confirmed to be Thunder... again)

Even considering the (seemingly) confirmed and incoming Thunder reveal, I think we'll see Eagle at some point during Round One.

Calling it now that he'll be a mild mannered accountant from Delaware with a plain wife, three kids and a Toyota Corolla. He is ashamed of Thunder's life choices and insistence on perpetuating racial stereotypes.

#BELIEVE
