Killzone Shadow Fall (PS4) announced, launch title [1080p/30fps]

They can use that six months to polish the SP and fix any potential problems for the MP.

Yeah I quoted six-months because I assumed an earlier than expected release date around September/October.

But the general consensus seems a release window a little later, in November. So adding the two months that the campaign has already been finished, they've already completed a large part of the development of the game with 6-7 months until PS4 releases.

I don't know the process for game development as I am not a dev, but they seem to be ahead of schedule. Which makes me think the launch window is earlier than we have expected perhaps.

If the rumors are true, it looks like the launches of both the PS4 and Next Xbox will have some really solid games.

Next gen may end up being the best gen in terms of the number of quality games during the launch window period in a really long time.

Shadow Fall is unfinished, utilizing less than 2 GB of memory, and 8 months from launch. I've heard the final product will blow minds. This game will top Crysis 3 in some ways significantly, but if you want to talk hardcore numbers, I doubt you will see something that can destroy Crysis on a Geforce Titan running at 60 hz in stereo. We are talking about hardware that costs more than 1k.

This will set the new bar no doubt :). Atleast that's how Guerilla feeels :).

Thuway may have been right and wrong about this one.

Like I said, it's pretty impressive if the footage we saw was only using a measly 2GB memory, assuming the footage was from the completed 2-month old campaign.

Is that so?
well, everyone is hyped for the ps4, but there is NO GAME which is actually interesting right now.

i killzone 4 looks like a generic shooter with BEST GRAPHICS avaiable at the moment.
i like killzone 2+3, but i never bought them at launch. its just another "will buy for a tenner"-game.

i just dont get it... is everyone pissed of, that this generation lasts this long?

People are excited for KZ because of the mp, it really is a genuine alternative to COD and Halo you know.

And many people would disagree with your opinion that 'no game' is actually interesting right now. It's a pretty awesome launch line-up so far.

you tried but you trollied with no flair.

PS4 isn't for you at all.

It lacks a killer new IP in my opinion. Still a very good launch line-up though.

KZ: SF director Steven ter Heide tweeted this a couple of hours ago, in response to whether the campaign was finished:

'@Sentry_NC has been for a couple of months. Had couple playtests already. Getting better every time'

This is quite suprising and interesting for two reasons. First, this means the footage that was shown at the Meeting on the 20th was likely using old dev-kits, possibly with 2 or 4GB GDDR5.

Secondly, does this hint at an earlier than expected release for the PS4? Surely if the campaign has been finished for a full two months, six months more development time is not necessary?
Wait.... The game is DONE?

wow DAT POLISH!

ugh. Are you watching the same videos I am?

I hope that the game is closer to KZ2 than KZ3. AndI hope they took away a few things (which would be highly unlikely for KZ4 given the thread was made at a time when the SP was fully planned out) from this thread (for KZ5 I hope):

Your motive is more than questionable just peering through some of your posts. Go back to playing your Xbox and thinking about buying a PS3 to play PS2 games >>

KZ at least looks interesting to me...the footage at the beginning was probably the best depiction of a sem-futuristic city I have seen in a game in terms of fidelity. Obviously, other games have depicted more beautiful and utopian visions, but this has the kind of bustle you would expect.

While your motives are plain and visible for all without any research :)

You explain it to me? I react. You can look at me any way you want but seeing this particular users posting patterns and lack of PSN ID is certainly more telling than me telling him off because of a post that garnered more than a few quotes.

My motive is to be fair but once I see some of his posts it kind of shines a light on things. Either way, I was confused like the other people who posted. I'm not disturbed by it so it's no big deal but has no real contribution to the thread so he should have worded himself better.

Your avatar does make what you said look funnier so I took something out of it haha

Yeah, I was surprised about that. He also tweeted this:

Bye bye peace and quiet. QA has arrived to prepare for next weeks multiplayer playtest

So it sounds like everything is already in place and they are just tweaking things.

Cant wait to get a look at the Multiplayer. KZ MP is fantastic. Nothing like the sound of screaming, dieing Helghast.

My biggest fear lies with their treatment of SP. I hope they pay attention to the fans' criticism and praises. I collated some of them here:

Strengths:

  • Gun physics (KZ2) and the consequent feel.
  • Response time (KZ3)
  • Pacing
  • Atmosphere (KZ2)
  • Boss fights (KZ2). Radec truly had a presence I have seldom seen in a video game. Almost like Vader.
  • Animation (hit reaction from KZ2)
  • Attention to detail (environmental and audio)
  • Multiplayer (KZ2)

Weaknesses:

  • Lack of identity (KZ3) and soul imbued by the art style, its consistency and atmosphere of KZ2.
  • Poor plot/story that fails to leverage the a multi-faceted struggle that defines the KZ universe, making it feel absolutely flat.
  • Highly annoying, crass and meathead of a partner.
  • Banal script. Another true disservice given how mighty the opening speeches have been.
  • A general disconnect between what is to be done and why. This general lack of impetus is tied to the plot, character, their motivations and moment to moment objectives.
  • Multiplayer (KZ3)
  • Lacking any memorable character (KZ3).

More here.

Yeah, I was surprised about that. He also tweeted this:

Yeah, no doubt they have plenty, plenty time to polish.

But puts into perspective how long ago GG started on SF, and how in hindsight there seems little chance that anything that was shown at the conference could have put the bump in PS4 spec from 4GB to 8GB memory to use. Although I will say I do know memory is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to graphical fidelity.

Opinions..... Everyone has 'em.

Personally the KZ series has been among the best experiences I have had on a console.

More here.

This is something that has me worried. I really wish a dev would come out and say we've been listening, we followed our vision but we have something for you that we think is going to address many of those concerns and points that have been raised. Everyone would breathe a sigh of relief and jump on the hype train. Last time GG said just wait and see and I waited and what I played left me bitterly disappointed.

Games is done without using that extra ram. Boo.

I actually prefer this, in a strange roundabout sort of way.

Considering Sony's big three (GG, ND, SSM) took the time to TRULY learn the ins and outs of the PS3 which was a pain in the ass for most devs, I wouldn't want them going all out with hardware, while exponentially more powerful, makes it "easier" to tap out.

I really want their titles that release in 2017-2018 to completely and utterly shit on everyone from orbit.

Since the PS4 is easier to work with, they might tap it out earlier due to being used to hardware that's a pain to work with.

IDK, this may be me talking a bit out of my ass, but that's just how I see it now.

6 months to make Day one preorder dlc too :P

Hip-firing only works at close to medium ranges. You need to use the sights for long ranges. And I like it. Not every shooter has to feature mandatory ADS to kill.

not necessarily. shoulderfire worked at long range like a champ. I never ADS in KZ2 outside of the sniper class. the game felt like it was built by people who played and loved old pc fps games before this ADS plague fell across the shooter environment. Your movment in engagements was as important as controlling your gunfire and aim.

I have no faith GG will ever get back to that delicious balance they had in KZ2, but i'm still interested.

They could probably bump the framerate to 60fps.

And it was already stated that doubling the ram does not double the framerate. Never has and never will since it's a storage unit and not a processing one. Adding more means negating any potential bottlenecking issues which may have arisen had Sony gone with 4GB (3.5 for games) instead.

The ram should help in more tedious scenes with keeping the framerate stable if the GPU can keep up. It should help embellish the visuals a bit more but the advantages come in terms of storing AI routines, textures for streaming, lending a touch more permanence to the world.

Reading Ricky's ode made me remember how awesome the KZ2 beta Sab was - taking different identities than just the rifleman. And count me among the group that hopes for a return to KZ2 style game/gun play (and map design). I disliked most everything from KZ3 the only real exception being jet packs.

While I want PS4 to have a tonne of titles at launch, I am somewhat disappointed that this will be a launch title because games with a heavy MP focus need betas. With that said, KZ3 was a failure in beta and didn't improve by release and KZ2 was actually made worse (spawn invincibility, no friendly fire, nerfed sab...).

I wanted to be done with this franchise after KZ3 but I love KZ2 too much and the lore and aesthetic keep drawing me back. Hopefully we will get more media and MP details soon.

Well this was tweeted in response to someone on GAF:

GG I'm sure are aware of what some of the community want. But the SP and MP seem pretty finished already but of course small tweaks make a big difference in competitive MP games like this.

I absolutely understand their position at the moment. I just hope that they have realized it when the game was in its planning phases.

That thread (the one where I said you could find "more") contains other ideas to make core design changes to the franchise from me and various other members. I was cognizant of the fact that it would be impossible to see some of the more radical ideas being implemented in a game that is already set to come out late this year.

So basically larger worlds and more detailed worlds since more can be stored in ram without having to be switched out? I'm really excited to see what ai and physics enhancements come on the PS4.

Suit yourself, but the launch is looking mighty meaty to me. There are plenty who care about games like Killzone, Drive Club, inFAMOUS and Knack. That is in addition to all of the third party games that will be there, like Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and probably a new COD, which absolutely will sell. Regardless if you find the games appealing or not, this is shaping up to be a very strong launch. Hell, it still would be even if a few of those get pushed back.

Indeed.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you really want to see just how much the devs (esp. first parties) can exploit the system, you would have wait till 2017-18. Every gen the true capability of a console at the hands of exceedingly skilful and creative developers is revealed when its generation comes to an end.

A lot of these issues were raised a long time ago, so hopefully GG has been paying attention. There is strong evidence that GG has always been listening to the fans, it just seems that they tend to listen to the wrong ones. I just hope that internally they viewed KZ3 as a failure (with respect to the execution of a vision if not sales wise) thus making them more open to the level headed criticisms that have been put forward in this community and others.

A launch title for a new generation does afford a certain degree of creative freedom to bring something fresh to the table (read: not heavily influenced by COD). So I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt until media and impressions prove otherwise.

The only thin I ask is that GG include the universe history on the game disk in some interactive way (maybe intel/library collectibles spread throughout the SP). That stuff is too rich to just hide away on a website.

Holy shit the game is already playable start to finish?

The polish will be GODLY.

A lot of big games are like that about a year before release. They're probably just front loading some of the gameplay polish so that they can focus on visuals once they get final dev kits. If KZ2's big improvements in the last few months of development are any indication, this game is going to look a lot better when it comes out.

Does anyone know what the precedent is, in terms of game development, for launch titles and how complete they generally are several months before a consoles' purported release date?

Because it seems GG are ahead of schedule if both the SP and MP are being play-tested.

I've always had this idea that devs are busting their balls to complete games for launch windows. It's obviosuly not the case with GG and KZ and shows Sony is not messing around by getting their first party working on titles way ahead of launch.

The fact that this evidence suggests it is so compete at this point in time also hints at the ease at which devs are taking to the PS4 architecture. Bodes well for the future and will make developers happy.

I reckon if we rewind seven years ago and this was a PS3 launch game, the development time would be significantly longer.

Exciting times. It is already breathtaking, so I imagine we are going to be in for a real treat with the final product.

There's a lot of jumping to conclusions based on that tweet, the game isn't finished yet.

He was asked if the campaign was playable from start to finish "in basic form" and responded that it had been for a while.

That's very different from saying the game is finished and it's just QA and polish now.

Yeah of course it's not finished yet, but he did also tweet that 'QA are arriving to playtest MP'.
