Kinda Funny Games: The Final PS I Love You XOXO

So do you think stand up comedy is enjoyable? Do you enjoy shows like always sunny or seinfeld? Where they clearly poke fun at certain people, so obviously in jest, but they still do it. Part of comedy is to make fun of eachother including ourselves.
He's saying it's not funny to make jokes about groups of people who are oppressed by society, particularly on a day which is meant to celebrate their accomplishments, accomplishments that often go uncelebrated because they are part of an oppressed group. That's exactly what Colin did, he took a day that was meant to celebrate women and made a misogynistic joke rather than, you know, celebrate the women in his life or the women he's worked with in the games industry.

yeah but that's not how that works. Their is a difference between attacking someone and messing around with somebody. Friends make jokes like this to eachother all the time, "ribbing" "messing around" whatever the hell you wanna call it. But people get pissed and attack others sometimes.

What are you going on about nobody is attacking anything it's all just obviously a joke!
That's how it works. When enough people just chant it's a joke it all becomes ok and nobody has any right to get offended. So how about stopping the fake outrage.

Maybe I just don't get it. You asked if I heard that joke on that day, I said no, but I could've heard similar jokes in jest. I don't remember all the details of that day lol.

Maybe you can read your reply and see where you said no.

Saying something like that sarcastically? I know plenty of people who make jokes like that completely in jest. I have one friend who is libertarian and literally everyone else I know is pretty far left.

edit-

read post above

What am I even doing still responding. And then you continued to go on about "that particular joke" when I don't really care about any particular type of joke. All I was asking was if you knew people who made any kind of sexist jokes (even in jest), on international women's day. Because my guess is probably not because it takes a special type of shithead to make that joke on that day because context matters.

Just like my friends and I would make racist jokes about each other (and only each other) on any regular day, but no way in hell would I make a racist joke on twitter on say Martin Luther King day. Cause there's not really a way you can do that and still really have it be totally in jest.

For seinfeld and always sunny I cannot say, haven't watched them.

For stand up comedy, same rules apply as to comedy in general. Punch up, maybe sideways but never down.

I think given his history it obviously ruffled some feathers. I think that is a dumb joke, but again it's just so stupid almost like self-aware of how dumb it is. So I can see how him being who he is makes it shitty.

again you're wrong because objectively there is a difference between saying something in jest and a personal attack. Again there are obviously lines, but saying "i'm kidding" obviously doesn't cover everything. It does however cover a lot of things and that's how comedy works.

Did you know that for shows like Seinfeld/Always Sunny, the "joke" is that the main characters are terrible people. Like that's why we laugh. We laugh at their stupidity, their actions. The show is trying to highlight how ridiculous it is.

If we want to make the comparison that what Colin did is at all similar, we have to conclude that he was in fact, being an asshole, and the "joke" is that he was an asshole.

But that's not the joke. He's made it quite clear he doesn't consider himself the butt of the joke. He's not going "haha guys look how terrible I am" in some ironic fashion. He wanted to specifically make people angry and then laugh at them, as if caring at all about the cause is a joke.

To Colin, the joke was "Lol SJWs you're so easy to get mad it's just a joke" while simultaneously lashing out at anyone who attempts to make the same kind of joke towards him.

That's not even at all similar to typical standup, and if you honestly think so you're living up to your tag.

Yeah exactly. Look at shows like King of Queens or Everybody Love Raymond. Sure there would be sexist jokes on those shows, but what is the common thread in all of those types of shows?

The husband is a doofus and the wife is usually the smart one and the person in control. And even then, those are jokes, within the story of the show, are made only between the husband and wife. Ray isn't going out there and telling the entire world about how his wife is a bad cook and is loud.

You framed this exactly how I feel about that particular joke. It's a stupid tasteless joke that is selfaware of how stupid it is. I said that a few posts up. I also said I can see how given who he is it would get people angry.

I would assume people know when somebody is just giving a hard time/messing around versus actual malicious humor."

I said it right there in bold. I did say no to the particular joke and I"m not entirely positive since I don't know the exact jokes. The subject of the question though? Will my friends make jokes to eachother like that? Yes absolutely.

No you seem to miss the point that the jury that defines what counts as an attack and what counts as a joke is obviously me and people who think like me as well as the joke maker. Anyone offfended has no say and is wrongfully offended and should just shut up and stop producing fake outrage.

Alas that is actually not true and maybe you can see that there are obvious bullshit double standards here, not that I expect that to be the case going by my experiencing with anyone defending the guy. People just going to make circle arguments until other people grow tired.

And you still don't understand the subject of the question. I already know you have friends that make jokes like that to each other. What I didn't know was if they made a joke like that to the public on international women's day. That was the subject of the question.

Because you asked if they made those jokes, and I said I don't remember but it's possible and they absolutely could have, because that's what my friends do. I realize now that you were looking for a very specific answer and I also was rambling in my first post since you insinuated that the only people who would make those jokes are trump supporters, which is false.

edit- and I did answer it in my second reply, and after that you still said that there was no reply to your question.

Well it's kinda the last show because of him. But people are also free to discuss the content of the show. I don't see anyone saying you can't.

Discuss about the show when you and other people keep going on about Colin? There were plenty of thread about him back then, and yet we are with another Colin thread. Sure, Colin is an asshole, but he has every right to pursue something he likes.

actually no I didn't just notice that, because I've clearly been pointing out that you're objectively wrong. There is very clearly a difference between joking and attacking, that's not up for debate. If you wanna argue which one colin's stupid joke falls under that is fine. It's very clear the tweet in question from the other person is an attack. This also has nothing to do with free speech because it's not really a question of that, it's more do with comedy, and whether people are too easily offended.

Again, that's not what I asked. Stop it.

Also I didn't insinuate shit. The only person I happen to know who makes jokes like that also happens to be a Trump supporter.

You asked "but how many people do you know made that joke on a day celebrating women?" and I told you i don't know the particulars but that a joke was probably made. I've told you this 3 or 4 times. That's a valid answer.

To go into more detail about Colin: I watched his Colin was Right episodes with interest, even if I disagreed with him on issues.

However, once he released the episode where he said people would have to shake hands with quite literal nazis (or people with disturbingly similar ideals), I just couldn't give myself any justification to follow any of his videos from that on. I am not going to shake hands with people who would have wanted to kill me during WW2 over something I was born with.

So, while the joke he made alone might have not been big enough problem (although punch up, not down still stands), his reactions to peoples commentary, coupled with the stuff he has seemed to do in the past (that handshake video being most affective to myself), I just can't see myself defending him.

It's a shame PS I love You has to stop, but the podcast would have not worked much further without Colin. Better to call it quits now.

I mean....I do. I would like to think people should think critically at least a little bit when being entertained.

Well I guess to each his own, and obviously everybody's different, but I feel like comedy is all about timing, so if you're sitting there wondering what the intent of a joke is it's just not funny. Also part of comedy is being clear with your intent, as mentioned above always sunny or seinfeld being intentionally ofensive/stupid to make fun of the asshole idea, which a joke like colins original one would typically fall under.

So what's the "asshole idea" that Colin was making fun of, the #adaywithoutwomen ?

If someone gets offended by a joke, do you typically call them a humorless sack of shit, or do you have some empathy and try to understand why they might be offended?

This. Always have your brain on a little bit when engaging in problematic content.

Plus Tweeting the Woman Day hashtag was not engaging in a comedy skit or in a friendly setting. It was explicitly in a political setting.

Also it wasn't even funny? It was just fucking stupid.

The "outrage" started out as a few people telling Colin that the joke was in bad taste and they didn't find it funny. Once Colin doubled down and called people "humorless sacks of shit" if they didn't think his comedic genius of a tweet was LOL-worthy, that's what set people off. He was looking for backlash from the beginning. Not sure which KF communities you're looking to, but I've seen equal parts disappointment in Greg and a "good riddance" mentality to Colin. His antics had no place in a community that was founded on trying to be one of the most positive communities on the internet, so it's no surprise that Greg and co. wouldn't defend Colin when he's actively trolling.
Remember, he basically called people sacks of shit right away, literally minutes after the first tweet (and before people even had a chance to reply).

He knew the outrage it would cause. It was bait, pure and simple.

I've already made it clear his follow up was ridiculously stupid, doubly so given he likely knew the response beforehand given who he is.

However people who are offended about things like always sunny? I definitely wouldn't call them humorlouss sacks of shit but I think they need to better understand the intent. Not everybody is going to get that obviously, but is outrage the right response? I don't think so

I mean there was a thread asking if south park was anti semetic, and it is blatantly obvious that it's not, especially given the jewish character in question is kyle broflovski who is based on the creator matt stone who is half jewish.

edit- and the asshole idea as that stupidly shallow view of women and my first though when somebody says something like that is well they're most likely saying that because it's obvious humor that is blatantly close minded. As I've said over and over in the thread without context of who colin is except that he was a fairly well regarded voice in the game podcast world, if I had seen that in passing I would think it was obvious what he was going for.

It was a nice sendoff. Great to see Dunham, and he seemed really excited to talk to someone about games, and always interesting to hear about the behind the scenes of the development. Overall it felt really upbeat, and I'm glad the show was able to end like this (though that last part was pretty sad).
I'm actually OK that they ended the podcast, it wasn't really feeling all that good for the past months, I wish Clement's could have been on too, but having Dunham felt good. I'm not really a KF fan or a Colin on his own fan so I'm fairly done with this group, but they gave some good years of awesome Playstation entertainment.

Well I'm a huge fan of always sunny and if I was sitting there questioning every single joke there is no possible way to enjoy the show. The intent becomes clear from the offset of what they're going for and to not take it so seriously, the same can be said for south park. That being said when there are shows or comedians who cross that line that's when I start to question things. Somebody like louis C.K. for instance likes to toe that line.

I would agree with that, because it gets lost in the rambling, but I was saying a joke like that really isn't offensive without the background of who colin is, but given his history I can see why it might get under some people's skin. I still don't know much about colin, but typically if I see a joke like that (for instance always sunny or south park would absolutely rip on that day) it's not meant to be serious.

There's a reason South Park and Always Sunny are at the top of the comedy game. Comedy, specifically based on controversial topics, is tough. Because Colin doesn't have the nuance and skill of those writers, his joke flopped. And that's fine. But when you double down and lash out at people, that's not as fine.

I still listen to the morning show a few times a week, it is enjoyable. I feel like they run jokes into the ground though (dumbass boy band name, b hole, bongos, etc.)

Listen, I have followed these guys for roughly 10 years and even flew from coast to coast to attend Beyond 300. Colin has been increasingly dickish on Twitter since early 2016 at least and I was able to mostly shrug it off until last November. For other people the tweet was their breaking point.

Possibly, but most of Colin's podcast appearances over the last year or so came with him playing little and rehashing the same talking points which he did manage to repurpose in well produced videos at the end.

The fact is, like others said, they just need to play and talk about games more.

Colin's joke was:

-Trash, the most bottom-level kind of humor with no cleverness, creativity, or nuance
-Misogynistic. Not the MOST misogynistic, but the premise of the joke is that 'life is more enjoyable without all these loud women around'. That's fucked up.
-Intentionally timed on a day when many of his peers were CELEBRATING the women in their lives or workplaces

Also worth pointing out: When people expressed their disappointment, Colin did the following:

-Call them humorless shitheads
-Use his girlfriend as a joke shield
-Quit his job
-Leave the city
-Allow his followers to shit all over his former "friends", coworkers and company, doing nothing to discourage their behavior even though many people pointed it out to him
-Didn't congratulate his friend or go to his wedding
-FRAMED THE FUCKING TWEET.
-Started a new endeavor, where people give him cash for videos with less nuance, experience, knowledge, insight or production values compared to many others out there doing the same thing
-Responded to people criticizing him by making shit up about their personal lives ("Oh that guy is just after me because he has terrible terrible depression, his friend told me so", and "oh don't talk shit about my job, you haven't had a job in five years")

Colin Moriarty is a hack, and a nightmare person. Absorbing and responding maturely to criticism isn't fucking rocket science, and he can't even do that shit consistently.

Someone should do a long form comparison on how Colin has responded to criticism over the years, versus how the McElroy brothers have, and which one has resulted in a more positive community and high quality content.

Flawless.
