It's better than I thought it would be, certainly. Those who have said it's a blend of Kessen and Dynasty Warriors are pretty on-target. You control your units' movements and formation in realtime on the battlefield. When you get into a fight, you take full control of a melee unit's lead character and fight hack and slash style. The better you perform, the better the unit performs (hits on you translate into casualties among your troops). After missions you can upgrade heroes and their troops with items, experience points and such, so there's a decent RPG-style character building system in there, too.
Four campaigns, two good and two evil. Nice variety, and the story unfolds slowly over the course of each campaign. The clashing personalities of the characters are a big factor, so there's a lot of chatter during battle. Some folks find this extremely annoying, but I think it's rather funny to hear the unit commanders calling each other "evil bitch" during a fight.
The interface can be clunky, especially early on when you're still learning how to manage the camera. Once you get that down, it's a very rewarding game for those willing to put thought into it. Nothing quite as satisfying as seeing those cavalry come over the hill, getting your spearmen set up just in time, and watching the entire mounted unit crumple before your lances. At $19, there's no reason not to buy it.
