Kirby and the Rainbow Curse |OT| players gonna clay clay clay clay clay

Play through levels 1-1 and 1-2 today. So far, so good. The art design is beautiful. I'm stilling trying to get the hang of controlling Kirby and drawing efficient lines. Looking forward to play more, but the gane seems best suited to being played one level at a time instead of a multi-hour marathon session.

This game's really fun so far. The second level drags, I was kind of regretting getting the game for a few minutes because that level is really long with not a whole lot going on, but the third level was great. Those waterfalls are really simple but they make the game a lot more interesting, can't wait to see what other curveballs the game throws at me later. The first boss and the two challenge levels I found were really fun too.

We'll see how it goes but I can already see this being like Capt. Toad where you can breeze through it if you want to, but if you go for all of the chests and beat all of the challenges it should be a reasonable length, especially for $40.

I never played Canvas Curse and I really don't like Kirby games in general but this one is great so far, glad I picked it up.

Damn, level 2-3 is such a difficulty spike for me but now I'm at 3-2 on track for 100%. Really digging the figurine gallery and the diary entries, especially the one for 3-1. The only disappointing thing so far is that I feel like all the stellar remixes you can unlock from the chests are only going to be used for the sound player and won't actually play in any levels. Will keep playing in hopes of being wrong though.

All I want to say, is that I don't see how anyone that was hyped beyond belief for Canvas Curse isn't fully in love with this game.

It's amazing.

Okay so I have never played a Kirby game before. Is this a good starting place? Or should I start with an older game?

This is not a traditional Kirby game. I don't not what you want exactly? Do want to get into the Kirby series as a whole? Or do you just want a game to play?

It isn't like there is an strong overarching narrative between games.

If you just want a single game to get into the core of Kirby then I would suggest Kirby Super Star on SNES/Virtual Console or its remake Super Star Ultra on DS.

There was a great Kirby 20th Anniversary collection on Wii that had the first 6 traditional Kirby games (including Super Star) on one disc but that's relatively pricey.

I don't know how anyone could play as Kirby and look at the TV. I'm sure they're out there, but 1% of the player base at most.

Nevertheless, the art style is great and looks good on the gamepad.

My only issue with the game is that the co-op is just tacked on. Waddle Dee is almost pointless. Makes some parts of the game easier, but he's not really a character in and of himself -- can't go in doors, has no lives, gets ported to Kirby when off the screen.

I really think a more robust co-op experience would've helped this game a lot -- a unique asymmetrical aspect.

Well, I played for about 4 hours so I thought I'd add my impressions. I've been looking forward to this game since they first announced it. I'm a huge sucker for claymation.

-I accepted the fact before buying KRC I would be looking at the Gamepad, but because I can play co-op, it's fun to replay levels as the second character for the graphics.

+Presentation is fantastic. It looks better than I expected even on the Gamepad.
+Best Kirby soundtrack ever?
+Fun level design and gameplay, you enter a transient state when drawing Kirby. It almost has to 'click' then it's hard to put down.
+Game gets hard fast, and that is good! Loving the challenge.
+Challenge mode is a fun addition but....
-It seems to lack variety (unless there's something new to unlock?)
-No way to restart in Challenge mode when I'm forced to play 4 stages in a row?

Overall it is much better than I expected. The gameplay is much more fluid, and I didn't expect such a solid soundtrack to join the amazing visuals. Definitely worth 40$.

Yeah, I guess I am just wanting the most quintessential Kirby game. And maybe if I like that I would check out the other games. I have no idea who Meta Knight or Dedede are (besides being in Smash), and I would like to find out. I'll look into Kirby Super Star

I shot people I like more for less.
I'm one level into world 4 and have done all the challenge rooms I can so far. Still enjoying it quite a bit. I've spent a decent amount of time idling in the music room too, a lot of great songs there.

Oh yeah!!! I forgot! Sorry my EU friends

Not really in the EU, but games have been arriving late here. We got Hyrule warriors almost two months after it's release in NA and Captain Toad a month later. The company who was given the Nintendo dealership here just sucks. They also sell them $10 more.

Hyrule Warriors was released in EU on September 19, and in NA on September 26.

I think the co-op is awesome. The pacing of the game works well and the person playing as kirby never feels distracted. Also in levels like 4-1 I was creating extra lines to keep waddle dee from falling giving me an extra challenge. Also that music in 4 - 1 :)

You might actually be the only one. At least you're the first one I see mention that.

I played it again, and nope, didn't click with me, I thought the level design is boring and the copy abilities are surprisingly out of place. I also dislike the music and graphics, sadly imo everything about it is just mediocre, thank god I didn't skip RC because I didn't like CC.

Started playing this last night.

  • The presentation is awesome and very cute
  • Soundtrack is great and worlds are interesting (ugh, the water world)
  • Cool collectibles and challenge modes
The control scheme though, holy shit can it be infuriating. I wish there was a better way to delete ropes than creating a new rope through the rope you want to delete. I often just mess up the path more by trying to remove ropes.

I played coop with my wife last night and was envious of her playing as Waddle Dee, it looked like much more fun and she was much more effective than I. It got to the point where I would just stop drawing ropes in some sections to let her finish it more efficiently. Seems like the flaws in game design are apparent in this case.

Maybe I'm missing something?

I LOVE Kirby games, but I always take a million years to play them. I haven't even played Triple Deluxe and I'm sure I'm going to love it. Hell, I recently finished Mass Attack!

I'm in the same situation. I played through the first world but I think I'm going to shelve this for a few weeks. Still gotta beat Wind Waker HD and Fire Emblem Rekka no Ken.

I've been playing one level at a time as well, making sure to gold medal and get all the treasure chests as I go (with a few challenge mode stages thrown in). That seems to be a good way to avoid getting burned out and make the game last (also is the way I played the original Yoshi's Island)

Keep practicing I can control kirby very easily and I have him doing loops then ramping into the air killing enemy's. I wish there were speed runs, once you get the hang of the controls you can fly through some of the levels.

So I'm in the second world of the game now, and first off, it's gorgeous. I have a huge weakness for claymation and HAL did a wonderful job of simulating that look. Control wise, it's pretty much the same deal as Canvas Curse, which is wonderful. Though I do miss being able to tap enemies or blocks, because getting Kirby to roll through them can be difficult. The one thing that I really don't like about the game is the 100 star power-up mechanic, which unfortunately seems to be one of the main features. Making sure that you can get 100 stars to have the special attack which you could easily mess up due to it being difficult to aim (therefore wasting those stars) is just not fun. I miss the power absorption, which, combined with Kirby's ball form led to some interesting methods of play. What I do like, however, is how there's actual bosses now, and not the same three repeated over and over. And the figuring collecting is fun, but I don't really enjoy the end level target wheel to get the journal pages. Overall, I'd say that this is a visual masterpiece, but a step down from Canvas Curse. Maybe I'd think more fondly of it if CC had never been made, but it's impossible not to make these comparisons. Still, fun game, and definitely worth the $40.

Oh yeah, and I've only played on the Gamepad so far, but there's no way that I could look at the TV if it were on.

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Scared of Getting Seared and Volcanic Panic are some more great tunes. Earlier I said the soundtrack dipped in quality a bit after world 1, but world 6 has been a great return to form. I'm extremely surprised with the quality of OST overall so far, I've never been a huge fan of music in the Kirby series before Rainbow Curse.

If me and the wifey are to sit down and enjoy this game tonight...

Would it better played 1 player or coop?

Which mode is this game best enjoyed? She has no issues with watching me play a game or taking turns etc.

There are some co-op impressions on the last two pages. Read them. I think this is something you might just want to try for yourself. Do the first level both in co-op and in both roles.

Play co-op it's fun playing as kirby or waddle dee IMO. I have a save file for co-op with my kids, and a single player save file. I'm sure she will enjoy the game playing either character plus you can enjoy those visuals if she's using the gamepad :p

Glad I decided to pick this up (and a Bowser amiibo as well, haha). Definitely preferring it to Epic Yarn so far (grabbed that recently from Nintendo's refurbished selection on the cheap).

Edit: something fun to try in co-op is having waddle dee carry kirby the entire time while the person using the game pad draws the paths. It's also fun throwing kirby around to kill enemy's.

Oh, that sounds really fun. Great idea. Like Boost Mode in NSMBU (those Challenges are BRUTAL; we still have a bunch to do in that game!).

Broken record alert but: KEY is an amazing game. Just go for 100% if you're not finding it tough enough. :)

(Best piano-based OST ever, too!)

I don't doubt it. Had a very cool graphical style as well, I was just finding the gameplay a bit boring for me, personally.

This game started off really strong for me, but I've been kind of disappointed with a lot of the levels after world 2. There are just too many gimmicky stages after world 2 - auto-scrolling stages, transformation stages, underwater stages, draw-on-a-map-to-escape stages, gondola stages... just give me a few more regular levels where I can really enjoy the core gameplay mechanics without other gimmicks going on! Variety is nice, but there's so much of it here that it dilutes the (awesome) core gameplay and it feels like HAL didn't have confidence in it.

It also doesn't help that there are actually only three different bosses, with all of them being reused. :(

I don't know. Canvas Curse is still one of my favorite DS games of all time, which is exactly why I was so hyped for this, but... this just isn't living up to that IMO. Maybe it's not fair to compare the two, but I can't help it.

It's still generally good, just not as great as it could have been IMO. The soundtrack and visuals are both top-notch, though!

Understood. I hope you can find some enjoyment in it if you try it again at some point, it really is a very special game if you're in the right frame of mind for it. :)

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I swear, I'm at World 3 now, and I've yet to unlock the Trees in the Depths of the Earth remix.

T-they did remix it for the game, right? It's the best song there is! Atleast there's that neat Kirby 64 Mini-Boss remix in the tank level.

Really enjoying myself so far, but World 2 really upped the difficulty. I mean, the levels are easy enough, but this is quickly becoming Epic Yarn-style frustration when it comes to getting everything. Luckily you don't lose stars when hit like you did with gems in Yarn.

Yeah, I gotta say, this is probably the first Kirby game that I legitimately am not enjoying very much.

I never really feel like I'm in enough control of Kirby to do anything I want to do. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to the controls or something, but I'm just finding it way more frustrating and annoying than fun, which is a shame because of how beautiful the game looks.

I never played Canvas Curse admittedly, so maybe that has something to do with it. Judging from this game though, I probably wouldn't like it either.

Yeah...I just missed the fast action you usually get form a Kirby game. That and the upbeat soundtrack. Yarn's soundtrack was cool, but didnt really feel at home in Kirby's universe.
