Kirby Touch impressions

Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Ok today I picked up Kirby Touch and Egg Hero. I have played both of them for about an hour a piece, so I can't give a real deep review of either. But it looks as if Kirby isn't going to be leaving my DS for a bit.

First and foremost this game brings a lemmings style to the handheld system. Just like Lemmings was perfect for a mouse (and should get a DS version if there is a God) this game is perfect for the touch pen. Now I know that it was made for the touch pen but that is not the point. Kirby basically moves forward until something stops him, which then he turns around and heads in the other way. You move Kirby through the levels by drawing lines under him; you can make him speed up or slow down, shield him, or turn him around depending on what type of lines you around him. So far the levels have been fairly good, but I am hoping that they get a bit bigger and wackier (if that is a word). The music is pretty sweet, and there are loads of unlockables that you pay for with medals that you find on levels or win in the "Challenge" mode where you can test how fast you can complete levels and so on.

So far it is a bit too easy, but awesome! Boss levels are not as good as in other games, but they are different, which is a plus in my book! Sorry for the short impressions but I have to get back to playing!

so, is this a full fledged game/platformer? because I was a little turned off by Yoshi's "hey, Im like half a level in a normal game" thing.

Yes it is! The DS finally gets it's first full fledged platformer and it rocks :)

yeah the levels are a little short. But really fun! And at least so far with the way you control Kirby there are a number of ways to get by each level. Also the levels are very free form.. you don't have to go left to right sometimes the exit is above you so you have to kind of do a u turn thing move... but by no means are the levels long ....so far... after an hour I am on world 3

Now THIS is one DS game I've been interested in...

Looks like a lot of fun. Keep us updated on the level design and size of the game!

Besides being on the short side, level design is top-notch! I am loving it so far!

when you say the levels are short what are we talking about time wise? Kirby levels have allways been on the shortish side (compared to say Mario or Crash).. are we talking sonic length levels.. or are we talking under a minute? Because if there are 20 or so 2-3 minute levels, I could probably deal with that.

Well that depends. Because you can get through the levels quickly if you want, but that isn't as fun as finding the coin on the level.

Sonic size levels usually. Each level is made up of about 3-4 rooms that are about a minute or two each.

Judging by the level select screen there should be 8 worlds so 24 levels total which seems like a good length from what I've played as they are all quite varied and fun.

What about Egg Monsters?

In short, I thought the dialogue was pretty funny and you get some great choices when talking to NPCs (reminds me of lucasarts games, "Are we all going to die!?!!?", --choice1: No, we'll be fine --choice2: Errr, yea probably"). Battle system is kinda dumb and simplistic (I've heard the main series has pretty terrible battles too, so...). Bottom screen usage during the adventuring parts is great because everyone in the audience comments on what's going on (--man this is terrible! --wait, I think it's about to get good here!, --Playername is so sexy!). Graphics are about 8-bit level when adventuring for some reason ^^; So it's kinda hit and miss.

These positive Kirby impressions make me feel so warm inside. Even better is knowing I'll have something to play on my DS in June.
