Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Fuck everything.

Where is the money in it for them? They'd maybe get a few more first party sales and then they have to cut good deals with 3rd parties to compete with steam. A lot of the PC release issues are also not Sony's strengths. They sold off the division which had much of the Pc expertise (SOE).

Would the effort be worth it? They need to spend to expand their capabilities and them compete with the folks already on the PC. The PC market is both smaller, demanding, and a few players have most of the money locked up (Riot, Blizzard, Valve, CD project Red).

Just my opinion dude. Don't really feel like fleshing it out. I do have reasons (maybe later I'll flesh that idea out...but I do think it's a good idea).

This is all very strange. Why would the market leader send out a bunch of development kits to developers who obviously cannot keep a secret.

PS4 was selling so well that this is not needed. Why would they shoot themselves in the foot like this it. Suddenly the PS4 is not looking so hot if a PS4.5 is on the horizon.

They better send out a very clear PR message soon...

The idea of an updated, more powerful PS4 that can play my current library of games and future games in development sounds awesome. I have purchased multiple console revisions anyway. I had 2 versions of the 360 and 2 of the PS3. I just don't see the problem with a revised console, but this time with extra power.

The key for me is the overall library of games. Having an ever expanding library of Sony exclusives with the option to play on ps4, ps4.5 or ps5 would be awesome. If done properly, I don't see how you could possibly argue against having the option.

At this point, regular console cycles are making less sense. With game development taking loner and longer, with the current model you will be asking people to shell out for a new console every X years only for each one to have smaller and smaller libraries that you can't play on your next platform. Fuck that shit. I'm thinking incremental console upgrades is the right way to go or at the very least, true backwards compatibility.

We really need to stop this obsession with '4K' when current consoles can't even reach a consistent 60fps at 1080p. Uncharted 4 single player runs at 30fps, no?

PS4.5 should promise 1080p/60fps. The term '4K' shouldn't even be uttered, unless you're talking movies.

Wow. Exciting times. I don't know how its really possible yet since we're still in 28nm land.

The funny thing is that all that talk about design wins by AMD could have been about PS4.5/X1.5 and not Nintendo.

4K is the reason why I don't think the system is launching before late next year or only going to be a minor incremental update. You don't push 4x more pixels with an incremental update.

Yep. This will end up being the PS5 on the same hardware platform (x86) and ecosystem (PSN/PDM 'Orbis OS') to make the generation transitions smoother, rather than starting all over again.

I could also see them doing a die shrink and maybe getting SATA 3.2, USB 3.0, better wifi. That's would be the standard stuff in a new SKU and all that stuff would be on the OS side to handle.

The PS4 already has USB 3.0, doesn't it?

Oh snap!

Don't most 4k tvs already upscale all content to 4k? Seems like 4k scaling would be pointless unless they somehow make it better than the tv scaling.

It's possible that my story is wrong, but then my sources are wrong, too. I specifically asked about a new GPU, and they said it's not just upscaling: it's a new GPU.

My gut tells me we're looking at Sony being able to brag about 4K, even if lots of games don't use it. (I'll take 1080p/60fps, thanks!) You know, like using a Vita as a second monitor, 3D games, and PS3 releases at 1080p.

Ding ding ding!

I don't know why so many in this thread are wrestling with this concept.

I guess Sony is looking for a way to fuck up their progress in the gaming industry this gen. Splitting user base is never a good idea no matter what. I hope it just stays in the drawing boards, and maybe shift into designing the next console which would release a few years from now.

It's like a big fuck you for early adopters.

(I'm a fan, hi.)

Just sounds very odd from a business perspective. The NEW 3DS is experiencing the problems of a more capable SKU being largely ignored.

There isn't anything fundamental that has changed in the business so why would Sony want to push this? MS is toying with the Idea because they're behind but what would Sony gain unless it's just a 'reaction' to MS if they too pull the trigger.

I know you would have confirmed with 2 sources and l tried to clarify but it just seems like a inexplicably bad business move for both.

Technically to support HDMI 2.0 the gpu would have to be re-designed and be a new one regardless. However, I'm with you on your interpretation. Thanks for the scoop.

ITT: Some people are conflating [simply] 4K with "4K @ Ultra Settings."

My 980Ti can run some games at 4K@30fps lowering some settings. I paid 700 euros for it. I wonder how Sony is going to release a 4K console for 400+ euros so soon. Or maybe it will do 4K for some indie games like Flower, but why would they do that? To get some extra power for PSVR? Would that mean some PSVR games won't run on the PS4? Or run worse? I think it's a terrible idea.

Consoles going the way of cell phones it seems. Makes sense that you can keep iterating and keep fans excited for next years box. Also I can see why this is needed as PC is booming. I understand the business sense, but I just fucking hate the idea unless current owners get huge trade in values (subsidized by Sony/MS) for upgrading.

Briefing != Sending out dev kits.

Well I dont have a 4k tv yet but these are exciting news.

I just hope my weaker ps4 will still run games even if at lower res until I can upgrade.

It's not gonna be a significant upgrade, just a little extra CPU power and RAM (not available for games). It's for the PSVR, like to ease the PS4 processing the VR.

I'm definitely interested in the implications of this. I wonder why Sony felt the need for a stronger PS4. The normal PS4 is still selling very well. I can see a push for better VR capabilities, but that's still leaving quite a lot of users behind.

This is stupid. I already have a PC that requires updates every few years. But what do I know, I'm just a 32 year old male, tech savvy, early adopter, with higher than average disposable income.

sigh

If they do this there probably won't be a PS5. Just PlayStation 2017, PlayStation 2019, etc. Iterative updates to the PlayStation platform.

If you want, buy every other one (or every third one!) and it's just like a console generation.

I honestly don't see what incentives they could possibly offer in such a small time frame (even if we assume it's every 3 years) that people would feel the need to upgrade

This idea makes way more sense for Microsoft because of Windows 10 and the fact they would basically be releasing Steamboxes. But for Sony? I just don't see it.

Kotaku has gotten a ton of rumors right in recent times, but this is honestly such a huge shift in so many ways for the entire indsutry and espeically publishers that the idea that Sony would just casually talk to developers about this and it's now an open secret sounds ridiculous to me

Because they believe gamers are suckers. I mean this generation has proved as much. Plenty of people will spend another $400(or whatever) for this.

Also, Nintendo set this precedent in the handheld business. People will buy an upgraded system no matter what.

It's a low risk-high reward decision.

I think that if they were smart they would. My opinion though.

Not only smart, but necessary as we are in 2016. I want games to work like movies, tv shows and music, god dammit!

Exclusives don't sell consoles anymore. 3rd party games are the king of the hill now.
I don't see PC versions of Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone having a big impact on console sales and if so...who cares. Sony will sell more games. I was addressing this idea in many Nintendoomed threads: What's the point of selling 12 mio. WiiUs and 8 mio. copies of MK8 if Nintendo could sell 20+ mio. copies of MK8 across all plattforms?

And let's not forget...Sony is also in the movie business, so a subscription service that runs on various devices would be a clever way of earning some extra cash.

I agree that it feels weird right now, but it makes sense with the rest of tech upgrades.

That said, when I talked to devs who weren't aware of it, they just sighed.
