Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Have always been a console guy so I need my fix of Naughty dog, PD, SP, etc games. I'm in the pessimistic camp about this move but will see how it plans out.

Agreed.

What makes this news so unusual is the timing as well, where most of Sony's big franchises and devs have yet to launch on the PS4. Yet now all of a sudden there's talk of a new console.

This gen has been weird.

With this rumored news I'm pretty torn. I feel like this is a slap in the face to me supporting the PS4 at launch. This news makes me also question what I should do with my current situation as my PS4 just broke so I'm sort of tempted to wait for this possible PS4.5 but than I will be missing out on Uncharted 4 and No Man's Sky or should I just repair it.

IM MAD AS HELL I BOUGHT A PS4 I WANT THE HARDWARE TO STAGNATE IM GOING PC ONLY WHERE NEW HARDWARE IS RELEASED EVERY FUCKING DAY

I mean, if Sony's trying to turn the PS4 into a PC with these incremental hardware upgrades, why not just build a PC and get all the benefits of that platform?

Also this.

Many people who bought PS4 at its first years will now definitely hesitate to do so with the PS5.

"Let's just wait for the superior PS5.5".

Maybe that's the real reason the Xbox One failed to gain traction in the beginning of the generation. Early adopters were afraid of another red ring of death situation. Nahhhh

Early adopters always get the shaft one way or the other. Pay premium, get early iterations of hardware that will have several upgrades through the generation, and buy hardware more likely to fail than their future revisions. That's the technology life cycle.

Because I would've just saved my money and waited for this beefier console.

In the future I'll wait until a console is on its last hardware iteration before picking it up.

So the car you drive is the final iteration of the model? What about your phone? Has your brand/manufacturer released it's final iteration of the phone? What about the computer you're using? Is it the final iteration?

We're stepping away from the traditional console generations. If you're "waiting for the final iteration," it might never come again.

So any hardware advantage Nintendo could had have just went down the drain lol. NX definitely won't get the hardcore back the gimmick must be really good.

This would be fantastic as right now the only way to play 4k discs is with an expensive dedicated player -- super annoying. I'd pay for a new PS4 tbh.

With the move to x86 architecture on consoles, I figured this would be what would happen. Think of your console now like an Alienware Alpha or similar. There will be newer versions that give better performance, while the older consoles will still play the games, just not as well.

I figured when MS started talking about going in this direction that it wouldn't be long before Sony did as well.

I'm personally fine with it - I'll upgrade every few years and sell my old systems. I'd like to see user upgradable memory like on the Alphas though.

I wonder what the specs/price point will be? I thought Sony would keep sticking with lower price points and reasonable specs after the success of PS4. Especially after the PS3 had such a slow start at high price points. Definitely interested because I just upgraded to a 4k tv, but wasn't expecting any new hardware in the next few years besides a possible "slim" system release. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

I would really be happy with this assuming it doesn't have exclusives for the old ps4, more options is always good, and the incremental system would work much better than having the same console for 8 stagnating years.

Where would we go to that "You develop for one PS4, you develop for 36 million" Sony just showed in one of those PSVR presentations?
Honestly I hope this never happen.
Devs will always target the biggest audience, wich means the weakest SKU, and the chances of we get even longer gens with only res + FPS + some assets being better is huge.
And if I wanted that I would have a PC, not a console

ANYTHING POSSIBLE. ITS BARELY APRIL AND LOOK AT ALL THESE LEAKS. INDUSTRY NEEDS A PLUMBER OR SOMETHING.

The same reason every last one of us bought the PS4 for in the first place, PS4 games.

You know, this 'right back atcha narrative' would work better if Sony was bringing all their first party games and releasing them on the PC the same day as their console, speak more about Windows in the console NPD PR statement, switch to MAU's, and lets us not forget the 2:1 install base.

I believe it was a culmination of things getting people to say that, not just short statement by Phil Spencer about hardware upgrading (which a short similar hypothetical was also answered by a Sony rep last year).

Shhhh...its okay I'm here for you

Backlash will be intense if there isn't any backwards/forwards compatibility.

Zeotis (insider) has hinted that games on the PS4 will work on the PS4.5, so crisis averted.

If not, we riot :3

PS5s is where it's at :p
But then they are only 1080p on your super duper system that cannot stand!

I think this will depend entirely on whether owners will be able to trade in their current console for the new version, and on how much they would be required to pay to do so.

Sony will have to work with retailers in all the countries they operate to make sure trade-ins are available for a fair price.

Well, shit. It was fun while it lasted :) I've never been a fan of this idea when it comes to gaming consoles. Brb gotta go yell at some clouds.

I have a launch PS4 and bought a second one for my bedroom in November. If this is a worthy upgrade, then I'd definitely consider it. I don't have a 4K TV though, so it'd have to give a considerable boost to PSVR and 1080p gaming to be worth it to me.
