KOTOR Fans: A Stupid Question (or two)

Is there a certain order I have to do the planets to obtain the Star Maps?

I just finished Manaan, along with Dantooine, so is there a set planet I have to go to, or am I free to choose whatever? Is there a preferred order most people take?

Also, is there a set "good" group I should bring along with me? Carth or Canderous? Mission or Zallbar? Bastila!?

Any other hot kewl tips are also welcome as well

And should I bother with KOTOR2? You know, just because.

I'm not too WOW OMFG GOTY over this game, like most people on the board, or heck, the internet feel, but I will probably finish it over time. I was never much of a PC RPG guy, anyway. D&D stuff scares me :(

I'm playing this is on PC by the way, since I would assume it wouldn't suffer the same problems the Xbox version did, unless I'm horribly mistaken!?

Well the game will get better.
You're free to choose which planet to vist, also it's always good to have a Jedi in your party.
I'm in love with Bastila's voice. :)

You can go planet hopping at your own leisure. Just pick a planet and head for it. Whichever one interests you.

At this point, I would recommend Bastila and Zalbar. Bastila has her lightsaber and you should give Zalbar a vibroblade. If you build up his dual-handed abilities, he can be extremely deadly with dual vibroblades.

Definitely pick up KOTOR 2 when you're done with this one. Some really great characters but the story isn't as strong as the first one, mainly because it's lacking that huge twist that made the first one so great. You'll see this twist soon enough. Still, it's a good game, and the influence system is fun to play around with.

Regarding KOTOR, there's no established route, you can take the four planets (post-Dantooine) in whatever order you wish. I tended to always go Tatooine-Kashyyyk-Manaan-Korriban, but that was just me. My party basically always consisted of Jedi members, particularly when I knew I was going into combat areas. But it was also nice to sub in other members while just walking around and talking with the locals. Many times, a little cinematic would be triggered depending on who you have with you at any given moment.

KOTOR 2... great game all the way up until the very end, which unfortunately falls very flat. I would still play it, because it manages to hold its own against the original for the majority of the time. But it certainly feels different, it is much darker and much more somber than KOTOR 1.

I'm a big fat pussy and going Light Side.

People are like OH JUST GO DARK SIDE ITS AWESOME

I already know how to be a big fat prick, so why not make the game interesting and be a big fat pussy? Makes sense.

I mainly take Bastila and usually Carth or Canderous for backup from afar, sometimes taking that robot (T3-643534 or whatever, not the MEATBAG one) because his computer skills are like BAM.

Is it possible to manually level up the other characters?

IIRC, the other characters will gain experience even though you are not using them so you won't just have a set of higher level guys while the rest are all crap. Just add one of the characters into your part and leave the Ebon Hawk, or just switch them out when you're in the field. You should see the level up prompt. Then, just go into the menu screen and level them up as you see fit.

The dark side is more fun.

This is true, but it's amazing to see how hard it is to turn on these people at first. When I went light side on my first run through, I actually felt sorry for the characters and helped them. On my next run through on dark side, it was horrible at first. I kind of felt bad for what I was doing but after I got started, it was a blast. Killing party members! Yes!

The same. I felt pity for a while - "wow, they really let you be a ruthless bastard" - but it gets really fun. My favorite dark side moment was
sticking the lightsaber into the locker that guy was hiding in on the underwater base. "nooooo!!!!"

Perhaps my mistake was going dark first. After that, I felt like a total pansy on the light side.

I couldn't do the planets in any order I wanted - the Aqua Planet (Maanam?) with the frog people was CLOSED for me untill I finished Kashyyk. I couldn't get into the city - the frogman dialogue didn't have the option to "let me in".

Korriban was the hardest that's why I finished it last (I didn't knew that monsters auto-level along with you, like in FF8 back then).

KOTOR 1 >>>>> KOTOR 2

The planets, the characters, the ending. Star Forge was miles, miles better than that WTF green planet and Sith Academy from KOTOR2. The only place I found fun to play in K2 was Nar Shadaa. The desert city with the palace was so-so - the Sand Planet from K1 was much better.

:lol
That part was great. I loved screwing around with him. His paranoia was just so damn hillarious. Lots of great dark side moments in the game. Especially after "the twist."

The game suggested I go to Manaan, so I did.

Yep, like the other people said, you can planet hop at your leisure. Use any team you feel comfortable with but personally I stuck with an all-Jedi team, as the powers are just too useful. I used the R2-D2 thing (also forgot it's name) for the insane skills.

Also, even though you have Jedi Robes, keep any armor (esp. later in the game) you find because it comes in handy whenever you just need to do straight-up melee and it can bring your Armor Class up to crazy heights. Also keep any vibroswords and stuff so when you fight robots with energy shields, you can negate it with the physical damage that the swords have to offer.

I also personally used critical strike instead of flurry because once you get master speed you get 4 attacks. Couple MS with a maxed out critical strike, and you get 4 very damaging attacks of critical strike, instead of 5 weak attacks with flurry.

Also, if you update your PC version of KOTOR, you won't be able to use broken-ass exploits like casting all your Jedi buffs, then putting on insanely good heavy armor for an insanely powerful character. Sure you won't be able to use any offensive jedi powers with the armor on, but you as a tank you cannot be beaten :) I believe they fixed that in later updates however, so feel free to use at your discretion

I'm running 1.03, so yeah I nerfed the exploits

I just got that HK-47 guy, so now I'll get to see why he's this oh so awesome RPG character

I haven't exactly had any difficulty yet with the game, but I did get kinda slaughtered at this one spot, but it wasn't necessary and I avoided it altogether the next load

And for the hell of it here's a picture of me whuppin on some Sand People's asses

...they killed me shortly after.

Unfortunately, HK-47 is pretty useless in combat since, well, he's a droid. He isn't nearly as useless in KotOR 2 though. People like HK because of his dialogue (and his stories which you can get more of if you have a really high repair skill) and you can get the most out of him if you're dark side (especially in KotOR 2 where you need influence to get more out of him).

If you're getting your ass handed to you too much by the sand people then I would suggest wearing their robes on your characters. They won't come out of nowhere and ambush you with those on. Also, you can kill those annoying Czerka miners by the sandcrawler and not get a dark side point.

Oh and if you want to get rid of those gizka on your ship then
you can go to Manaan and sell them to a guy (an alien out in the first hallway). Whether or not he buys them from you or if you pay him to take them depends on your persuasion skill and your charisma attribute. Also, I think you can force persuade him to take them but it may give you a dark side point, but a dark side point here or there doesn't really matter in the first KotOR.

I'd also recommend playing a dark side game as well but if/when you finish the game and you don't like it then playing as the biggest prick in the galaxy may not even be enough incentive for you to play through again. Although, personally I think the coolest moments in the game come when you're dark side.

Oh yeah, PUT AT LEAST ONE POINT IN AN OFFENSIVE FORCE POWER. Like Lightning. I cannot believe the number of people who didn't do that and got completely screwed over at the final battle.

I got owned, because I went ALL Light Side -- ie, no Dark Side powers. I realised the err of my way by KOTOR 2, and was dropping hordes of baddies with lightning while glowing Light.

Though I generally think you should make your own way through KOTOR (it's cool to see people with different stories because they did something slightly different)... the only tip I have is that you should end on Korriban. Do that last. You'll understand why when it happens. No spoilers!

For teams, I found the droids useless. Once I had a Jedi who could heal I stuck with living characters so I didn't have to waste medpacs or repair kits. I generally used Carth and Bastila; while Canderous is useful (auto-health is awesome), I was already more than familiar with how to use Carth and what role he could play so I stuck with that.

KOTOR2 wasn't exactly challenging. The Mega Light Side Buff (haste + armor + force) and some two nice lightsabers did wonders.

Don't waste your time on KOTOR 2. It was a travesty. Didn't finish it and I loved the first game.

I didn't put one single point in dark powers, and I kicked the f'in shit out of everything at the end of the game.

If playing light side, run quickly to the planet with the darkside test. The one you can't take Bastilla with you. The solari crystal in the cave will make you uberpowerful against evil characters the rest of the way.

No offensive powers makes the fight with
Malak
harder because you can't
destroy the life tanks that he uses to heal himself.
. I fought him without any offensive powers the first time and it was annoying having to kill him essentially 8 times.

There's one light side power you can use at the end so you don't have to do the fight the hard way:

Destroy Droid. Works just as well as Force Lightning on the contraptions holding the Jedi, and it's a Light Side power.

No need to use any points on the Dark Side.

Throw lightsaber works on the tanks.

It didn't for me - it wouldn't let me target the tanks. However whenever Bad Guy went off to recharge, I did likewise (I'd amassed a huge stash of power-up items) and slashed him up, old skool. :D

Same here. I did have Force Storm at the end of the game but it was just so useless. It wasted more than half of my force powers because I was light side and did so little damage. My light side force powers were much, much more powerful.

On my second time through, I decided to screw around with the final boss so all I did was throw gernades at him. I had a stockpile of adhesive gernades and frag gernades. It was hillarious watching him get stuck in place and then bombard him with frag gernades. :lol

Destroy droid is way better than Force Storm against droids. Huge difference in damage. If playing light side, play the warrior type with all buffs and destroy droid. If darkside, you have to play as a consular. Unbelieveably awesome.

I stayed on the light side but gave myself darkside powers with the light. All the kickass abilities without feeling like a evil person, best of both worlds!!

Yes, destroy droid will absolutely obliterate a whole army of droids in no time at all. Force Storm didn't do any damage to anything at all. Droids or sentients.
