KOTOR II: The Thread

Why doesn't he just give the graphics score a 1 and be done with it. He can take off a a 10th of a point for every blade of grass that doesn't sway the right way.

It is Gamespot, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did do that.

I'm getting this game, but after the complaints with the frame rate, loading times, and glitches I'm now holding out for the PC version! I knew Obsidian wouldn't disappoint game content wise! I await a wealth of impression in this thread! KOTOR II will be sweet!

Wait a sec KOTOR II Xbox comes with Republic Commando demo? Hmm more tempting now!

thats because its not true troll-boi.

so to play your game for a moment, if the general consensus is that Kotor1 is better than fable and kotor2 is more of the same, ergo....
plus you havent played it have you? so you are talking out of your ass perhaps?

on topic,

my copy is on my desk here at work. nice new manual smell. i cant wait to give this a whirl. i refinished the darkside ending of Kotor1 to jog my memory.

vampire:B is about to take a backseat.

Way to overreact, slick. Members of this board love to inflame and parse review scores to meaninglessness, therefore I was surprised that no one has noted that Fable has a 0.1 point advantage over KOTOR II on Gamespot.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that mentioning a point that hasn't been made is not the same as agreeing with it. Where I come from, we call that playing the devil's advocate.

and now im over-reacting? ;)

tbh, i find it hard to read all of that into your one-line post. perhaps im not just accustomed to your style...

I started it up, I was exactly the same as the first one, the old text is blue, this one is green. I went back to MGS3 afterwards. My backlog of games is too long. MP6 today as well

KOTOR II today.

Gonna finish Shadow Hearts: Covenant first. Maybe start on MGS3 first (since it's shorter).

...Maybe.

Just an FYI...for those who don't pick up KotoR II, the Republic Commando demo is on the new XBox Exhibition disc Vol #7. I also suspect that it'll be in the next OXM. I played the PC versin at this years GenCon, and I thought the game was spectacular. I love the chatter the Clone Troopers have amongst themselves. The graphics were pretty good and I'm all for squad based gameplay. Sorry to derail the topic slightly, but I think the demo is worth checking out.

I was thinking of doing that too, but my copy of KOTOR II is just sitting there, glaring at me. Begging to be played. I will probably put about 200 hours into KOTOR II before I even touch MGS 3 :lol My backlog is so huge.

The problem is the guys I work with are apeshit insane over MGS3, and will probably spoil the ending if I don't beat it relatively soon.

That Republic Commando demo is sweet. Looks good and controls great. Lots of nice little touches like if you snipe a battle droid's head off it's body will remain standing, or the melee attack where a blade comes out of your left wrist.

As for KOTOR 2, it's a little underwhelming in the beginning. And why are all the damn heads so freakishly misproportioned or stupid looking? There was only one or two normal looking male heads to choose from in the first game, and it's the same here. There's no excuse for not having more customization options for your appearance.

The kid who sits behind me in Economics is a casual gamer, and he picked up MGS 3. He won't shut up about. He already beat the game, and has threatened to spoil the ending hundreds of times. If he even mentions the word Boss, I am going to punch him so hard in the face, he will swallow his teeth.

Thats a little harsh

They only had a year to get this out, consider the amount of dialogue, voice-work, story structure, gameplay tweaks, larger worlds etc that needed to be implemented.

They turned up with a winner within such a short timeframe, i cant really blame them for the lack of customization

Actually, work on KOTOR II started even before KOTOR was finished so they had more time, but the character customization doesn't bother me. It's the actions that make your character, not his model.

Not really. Would it have broken someone's back to let me choose a hair/beard style or at least the color of my character's hair/beard?

Were you expecting Fable? KOTOR was never about the character's appearance. They gave you a set of heads to pick so you wouldn't get stuck with one you hated, and from there they let the decisions govern how your character looks. The amazing cloaks, and other clothing in the game more than makes up for the lack of facial hair.
Clothing in KOTOR > Fable

KoTOR II gets another low review - 7.5 at 1UP. I guess it just can't compete with the quality RPGs on the other system. All of us Xbox owners enjoy it because it's all we have.

So for those that have played it enough thus far would you consider it the RPG of the year? I'm leaning that way.

Some people would argue SMT 3, but I would consider KOTOR II to be RPG GOTY easily. 1up's review doesn't mean much. Haven't really ever trusted their reviews, and I don't care much about reviews anyway. The game is sitting in my xbox right now, and I am on my way to saving the republic, and I couldn't be happier. Most sites and magazines will score it lower because it's the sequel to KOTOR, and that the graphics havne't changed much. The media doesn't really know how to review games anymore. Need I bring up GI's review of PM 2. Speaking of PM 2, that's another contender for RPG GOTY.

Omg this game kicks ass, only been playing a couple of hours but already i can see that theres a lot more mystery to your companions this time round, you really cant trust any of them completely.

Met up with someone strangely similar to
HK-47, called HK, same hilarious disregaurd for human well-being, so cool

Thus far, i dont think anyone who liked KOTOR will be disapointed with the sequel.

Also, im pretty sure they fixed the running animation, it definitely looks a lot better than i remember it.

Yeah, the animation is definetly much better. I definetly love
that they introduced a whole line of HK robots.
It is an excellent game, and should not be missed if you remotely liked the original.

I'm about 10 hours in. About to crash and go to bed now. First, a few quick impressions:

There is a definite sense of deja vu,
Telos
feels a lot like Taris did, similar lay out physically and just some of the missions remind me of the first game. More of the same is certainly not a bad thing when the thing in question is KOTOR, but I would like to see a potential 3rd installment use a completely different engine(which will almost surely be the case since if it comes out, it will be on Xenon). Graphical criticisms are definitely valid, the slowdown IS worse than the first game IMO, but it only really happens when you're fighting more than about 4 or 5 enemies at once or there's a shit ton of explosions going on.

I have to say that I really dug the opening segment.
Not just the T3 bit in the prologue, but I thought all of Peragus was quality. Definite sense of isolation and mystery going on in the mining complex. Finding out who was to blame was awesome, and HK-50 was a super badass. Can't wait to scavenge more parts and get HK-47 operational, but I chose a Guardian so combat wouldn't be a pain in the ass and if you have to have a high repair skill, I'm up shit creek. Also, whoever said you can't really trust your new companions is right. Kreia and I are always bitching at each other, I'm actually playing light side first time through and she's starting to question why I keep helping others. It's like, I can either keep losing influence with her or stick to my guns and keep building up light side points. So far I've stuck to the straight and narrow light side path and have built up a good bit. I just got done saving the Ithorians on Telos from Czerka retaliation, and am about to head down to the planet to try and find the Ebon Hawk for reference on where I am. Hey, you highlighted the spoiler, it's your fault if you didn't want to know, buddy.

I'd definitely say that this is the RPG goty for me. If you really loved the first KOTOR and don't mind looking at an ugly game(for the xbox anyhow), then this game is for YOU. As far as GOTY goes? Ninja Gaiden is still better than this. That game rules.

Troll me at your own risk of smashed genitalia.

i can understand why its getting some lower than expected scores. it seems to be more of an add-on mission pack rather than a TRUE sequel. not much seems to be have been done with the engine (and the originals problems havent been address at all)

but.

its all about the gameplay. its very dialogue heavy which i do enjoy, but what i dont enjoy is the crashes. it crashed twice on me and thats in the first 2 hours. it seems to be a safe often and in a different slot sort of game.

hopefully its just me, i copied the disc onto the hdd because the noise the drive was making couldnt be good for it.

Haven't had any issues with it crashing as of yet. But then again the first one never crashed on me either, and I'm still on the same xdude.

And I do agree about the engine needing a major overhaul if not starting over from scratch... I still think this is gonna be one of my favorite games of the year. Can't wait to get home and play more.

Why? it still wont look good :lol

Man i'm totally hooked on the game now, i was up till 4 last night, then woke up at 11 and started again, its now 2pm and i just managed to drag myself away, the first game certainly didnt hook me like this in the early stages, it makes a big difference being able to use your force powers from the start.

What is with the map in the upper left hand corner of that KOTOR screen shot? Is this added to the PC version or is that a MOD? Maybe my memory is fuzzy but I remember having to access the menu screen on the xbox version to get to a map and it didn't even look as detailed as the one you have. It has been awhile since I played KOTOR so I may pick up the PC version for cheap (20 bux now) to play it again and get refreshed with the story in anticipation of grabbing KOTOR II.

It's the default map that shows up and not a mod, I didn't download any mods for the game.

The enviroments ive encountered so far dont come close to the KOTOR ones, mainly because it's a lot darker, theres no opportunity for a sweet lighting effect to make everything look amazing like it does in those two shots you posted. Yeah it'll look better than the Xbox version, but it won't look good by todays standards, thats what i was trying to point out.

How does it play better exactly? I played the PC version briefly and didnt find it really any better or worse, just different.

Im really loving what they've done to the allies, they definitely all have uses this time, like the guy who can bash down force fields. Also, in the first city at least, theres terminals that move you between the zones, cutting out a lot of the pointless running. It really feels like a more polished experience.

spoiler:

Hope i get to kill Carth

I was talking about the frame rate. ;)

Anyone know when the PC version is coming out?

February.

Both versions were originally slated for Feb release but the Xbox version got pushed up to Dec at the last moment. Lucasarts probably wanted to hit the December sales rush for the Xbox version. And from reviews I've read the game has paid for being bumped up (I.E. bugs).

its gonna be a long wait :(

guess I will finish Dark Cloud 2 over the winter break,

I have to say I think Obsidian needs to hire better environment artists, because the first two areas are incredibly bland and boring. I've seen little but brightly lit, drab colored, squarish hallways and rooms for hours. Kotor puts it to shame in that respect (so far anyway).

I have to say, the framerate is horrific in many areas. Even though it damn sure would be worse on my PC.

Really disappointed in that, especially considering that the graphics are not anything that should bog the xbox down.

Framerate doesn't bother me at all considering there's no need for any quick reactions or movements. Game is great so far but it does seem like they used the original as template a little too much and makes it feel almost like they have just changed the names of people and places. Still one of the best games of the year no doubt.

I wasn't planning on getting this game but with the doctors out all day yesterday in meetings, business was a little slow so I steped out early to do some Christmas shopping and picked this up along the way. I just got off of Paragus and so far I'm liking it even more than the first, something I really wasn't expecting to happen. Sure much of it so far feels like familar territory but for some reason or another I'm completely hooked. I loved how mysterious Paragus was with much of the story told through recorded holograms. I just hope the plot remains this strong throughout the entire game.

Good stuff.

The framerate is horrific in some areas and I encountered a weird glitch. I was looking at a container with the little droid and gave hiim an open command. He went somewhere but not towards the container and the next thing I know I am in space outside all of the level's structures and the game is targeting some enemy somewhere. It was kinda cool so I figured I'll just press white and see if I can wonder around but as soon as I did that I was back on the mining station.

With that said the beginning of the KOTOR2 destroys KOTOR1. The holograms are great. The changes to gameplay like being able to create and breakdown your items, being able to switch between melee and ranged weapons, there are attribute options in the dialog trees which are a great touch, droid recovery is based on your treat injury skill (not sure if KOTOR1 had that) + many more are all welcome additiions. I'm playing as a female and the sexual banter is very funny. The story and dialogue trees are great and needless to say I am really enjoying this so far.
