Kpop Demon Hunters

Wtf it's good? 🤣

Was cooking for my son and it was playing in the background.

I tell him it's for girls and let's watch something else.

I sit down and was hooked.

Afterwards he proceeds to clowns me and goes, "Thought it was for girls."

Between this and the Wild Robot, it's hard to think Disney can compete with this level of storytelling.

Impossible for a kpop thing to be good. This is like kid stuff.

I will watch it based on your recommendation.

It's 6/7 story wise. I don't like that it's only focus on just 2 characters.
Art style and animation are good though.
Love the tiger design! So cute!

I haven't seen it yet, but it seems to be popping off on the interwebs. It's crazy this comes out the same week Elio flops in theaters. Disney needs to clean house if Sony Animation, Dreamworks, and Illumination keeps running circles around them.

This. Flop after flop.

Disney seems to be stuck since bececoming overly reliant on Pixar.

And somehow despite owning the greatest catalog of IP their capacity for quality output seems to have been greatly diminished.

You can own it all, but if you don't know what your consumers want from it, then it doesn't matter. They are still delusion at Disney.

lol they played love maybe by melomance ...this movie surprised me..like transformers one.

the character expressions in this movie are insanely good. thanks for the rec

It's pretty damned good, but F this jerky low frame rate style they have been pushing ever since Spiderverse and Dragon Prince. Is it really a massive cost savings to only animate every other frame or whatever they are doing? I get it with hand drawn stuff (though I prefer other cost saving measures) but even CG?

I figure AI interpolation will squash it in a few years but its a plague.

I need to go watch some OG GitS, Fleischer Superman, and Liquid Television shorts to reset :P

I didn't think it was great. Too old for K-pop the story is a trope and I hated the boy band. 2/5.

It did capture musicians sell their souls for success.

Wife made me watch it, it was alright. Started off strong, the middle was messy.

I didn't like how it didn't want to fully commit to being a musical, as in I think only three songs were fully performed.

I haven't watched it but I got a feed in my youtube, the MV for the songs. They are pretty catchy.
Thinking about watching it over the weekend w/ my GF.
She made me watch Nezha2 twice, so she owes me to watch a animated movie of my choice. lol.

Average.

Looks good, but uses the low framerate look that is love it or hate it now. I'm kinda done with that style.

Story is basically Frozen/lies revealed and just as simple. Any moment was expecting Rumi to just belt out a true solo.

Pretty swift hate you-love you moment and then redemption. Hmmm, ok.

Songs honestly weren't that good, but I also don't think most modern KPop is any good. Way too much auto tune going on, it's quite distracting.

Overall, one of those average CG movies that can be watched if you're out of things to watch, but it has a nice visual appeal (even with the low framerate).

Also, I hope this wasn't taking time from Part 3 of Spidey.... probably not, but would be disappointed if it did!

Really enjoyed this. The story is straightforward but well-told, well-paced and self-contained, with the world-building which exists relating entirely to what is needed by the narrative. The characters aren't deep but their personalities come through clearly enough even if they don't stray far from their archetypes (conflicted protagonist, aloof punk, enthusiastic girly girl, tortured antagonist/love interest, etc). The music was catchy and integrated well with the plot, I was a bit mixed on the visual style but there were still a lot of fun details and sight gags. I'm also a sucker for an ending where rather than a last minute struggle against the odds, the heroes become powerful enough to lay waste to the villains and the film focuses more on the exhilaration of triumph than high tension. That only works if the audience has established a strong enough connection to the protagonists, as well as plenty of spectacle to emphasize the scale of their success, and the film nails it in every respect (the final song is the best one for my money). Yes, it can feel like a corporate checklist of 'what are the kids into these days?' (kpop, female empowerment, animation style, etc.) but it's always welcome to have a film which does what it wants to do to a high standard across the board and doesn't waste time trying to set up sequels or be 'bigger' or 'cleverer' than it needs to be. An entertaining movie with good music and an efficiently-told story is more than enough to be an easy recommend from me.

I agree. My daughter loved it though. (She's also into a Kpop phase so that probably helped.)

I really like Disney but they definitely lost their way. I think the last Disney one we watched as a family was Tangled or maybe Encarto. The problem between then Disney and now Disney is they went from telling a story to preaching. Parents don't want it. Disney needs to go back to what worked for them and they'll find success again.

Watched this yesterday since I was visiting my sister and my niece is really into it.
Overall it's ok, the songs are pretty catchy and the characters are fun, but the actual story is pretty bland, and personally I don't like this choppy low framerate animation style.

....you've never seen a reference scene before? It's been a thing for decades

Yeah, it's not like they are doing mo-cap, like they do with Avatar and whatnot with that face tracking rig. This is just getting reference to help with animating.

I imagine in a few years we will see AI driven CG overlay of live action, basically like the Baski LOTR rotoscope but done in grand style, become a major technique.

I think they have been doing reference since Snow white. I know there is video out there of Alice in wonderland reference footage.

Fair enough. I think initially I was under the impression they were traced or rotoscoped but the vids showcase how it's definitely been exaggerated and made distinctive.

I don't think I've ever heard any k-pop song, but I really liked this movie... all of it: the low-framerate animation, the characters, how they were sometimes getting these exaggerated, anime-style faces... songs were very catchy, with perfect delivery in female rap parts. OK, the story was cliché, but at least it was partly based on Korean myths. Some of the voice actors included the Frontman from Squid Games and the Asian couple from Lost.

One thing I was a bit disappointed about was the tiger creature which looked & behaved exactly like the one from Totoro (+ stripes).

Yup best animation film since Puss in Boots The Last Wish

It was like Buffy the Vampire Slayer but a Kpop animation.
