Kpop Demon Hunters

Watched this with my kid and it's awful. She loves it but the story doesn't even make sense.

I'm ok with "kids" stuff as a rule and enjoy most of it (Dinosaur Train 4 life!) but this just didn't catch me. But, as I said, the kids loved it.

Found out about this movie by chance and watched it with my daughter. Now she's singing along to all the songs all the time.

Story is pretty basic and easy to follow for the target audience.
Not so much "female empowerment on the nose", surprising for a Netflix movie.
Oh and the Boyband has a different frame ratio, showing that they're out of this world. Nice detail.

I'm taking my daughter to the sing along in theater tomorrow. Bastard is sold out EVERYWHERE. There is definitely a model where netflix releases their ultra popular stuff into theaters for a few weeks just to make some hard cash.

Damn, in theater this film really rocks. Of course being surrounded by dozens of little girls belting out the lyrics doesn't hurt, took half the film before the kids realized they COULD loudly sing along :P

I never realized that the lyrics had a lot of korean, I just thought I was going deaf and couldn't understand them :P

Anyway, highly recommend it if it comes back around. Really solid film. I can not fathom why Sony let this go, either Netflix did a hell of an editing job on it or someone at Sony straight up malicious. There is no world where folks hear those songs and thinks "nah, this is gonna be a dud."

Crazy how it caught on.

Never heard of kpop until a few weeks ago. I thought it would be some super popular kids TV series on NF. Turns out it's not even that. It's a movie.

Great movie! I have some problems with the plot, but the songs are great and overall it sticks the landing. I can definitely see why it became a huge hit.

Just listened to the apple music top charts, and this movie has nr 9, 7, 5, 3, 2 AND 1 on the charts lmao; absolutely wild.
Them songs are bangers. Not only are they solid songs in their own right, but they play into the narrative in a spectacular way.

No idea who wrote this stuff but hopefully they have a long and illustrious career. I feel like Lin-Manuel Miranda was on this path but then everything he wrote started sounding like Moana to me.

Surprised people love it. Watching some clips on YT it's got a really bad choppiness to it like a game running at 15 fps. But for a kids flick it has a solid look to it's art style and good audio production values.

My kids love it. I wanted to hate it. Now I'm humming the fucking tunes.

This and F1 are the blockbusters of the summer

It's 6/7 story wise. I don't like that it's only focus on just 2 characters.
Art style and animation are good though.
Love the tiger design! So cute!
I read this as a 6 out of 7, and thought who the fuck ranks shit on a scale of 7, and god damn 90% is high marks!

so I had the unfortunate luck of my 7 year old daughter and her little group of buddies make me sit through this garbage today

then I had to suffer the soundtrack on repeat in the car for an hour while I dropped each of them off back at their houses after a day around our place.

This is worse than all of the Disney slop combined.

Having had to do this as well, it is FAR better than most disney stuff, Secret Life of Pets, or whatever on repeat. Not a bad father daughter bonding experience IMHO. I just can't do moana or trouble or pets again, I jsut can't :P

man I would take moana all day over this shit, the angsty voices are cringe

Perhaps, it being on netflix allowed for word-of-mouth spread unlike any other. If you have Netflix, the barrier to entry is your time for the evening, compared to an expensive night out with your family. I'm sure it would've done decent as a theatrical release, but doubt it would've broke any records or even come close to half a billy had they released it in theaters first. Netflix, coupled with a disappointing summer movie release schedule provided the perfect storm for this to take over.

I think a decent PR campaign around the songs would have gotten it good word of mouth and loooong legs. Most streamer "#1 this week!" movies are dogshit and wouldn't have done well in theater. That pratt/millie bobby brown robot one for example.

I remember looking at netflix stock when it was $15 a share. What a fool.
