it's not only the name, it's even the fuckin shields

even when the US did away with the British and their monarchy, they still find away to slip a Crown in their crest

SKC was named by forming a Sporting club just like the Portuguese. The shield represents the KS-MO border.

First: stop calling it soccer, please.

Second: no, I don't believe MLS is going to be relevant any time soon. The few top players that go there only do when their careers have ended, and that's not changing. Let's trust Wright-Philips and Kaka, yeah.

We will call association football whatever we damn well please.

The fact that fucking Bradley Wright Phillips can go to the MLS and be a star says it all about the current state.

Also the MLS will never be the biggest football league in the world because of the Champions League, its that simple. Also salary.

Prestige is a big thing for top footballers and there's nothing prestigious about winning the MLS.

However this being America, MLS WILL be a major league eventually.

So if the argument is that soccer will become popular in the US as soccer stars want to play in the US because of the anonymity, wouldn't they lose that anonymity if soccer becomes popular in the US? Kinda self defeating.

In the UK, they have Soccer Saturday and Soccer AM. The terms are interchangeable.

Orlando City was founded by a member of the Stoke City Board of Directors so it's not surprising he stuck with it for tradition.

Thats mostly done for alliteration

For starters the FIFA is called FIFA, not FISA. It's just a gesture, but it shows how little US people care about a sport when they call it whatever the hell they want and in contradiction with the rest of the world.

Why does it matter what it's called? So Italians should stop calling it calcio or Croatians should stop calling it nogomet?

Get paid a good amount of money to play in a substandard league and live in a city with great weather.

Yes, I can see why second-rate English players would be interested.

Yeah, Wright-Phillips was playing regularly in the third tier if English football and then becomes the top scorer in the US. That Giovinco is the top paid player is another oddity.

I'm not sure why anyone should care.

I don't think it's going to be relevant, the Champions League is still the biggest and best tournament and it's only for europeans team. It has major appeal on football players.

And they wont have to worry about bananas being thrown on the field or racist chants. Welcome to America future soccer stars.

Instead they'll have to worry about getting shot every time a police officer pull them over. So much better right.

See I can say dumb shit too.

Weak league but good salery.

Doesn't surprise me that old and/or busted mid tier players would love to play in the USA.

Using European traditions, names and brands like somekind of parasites is the American way. Please enjoy your original Parma ham from California.

How they going to git commercials in?

Probably the same way they do in NASCAR races, they just go to commercial break while the competition continues on. Just as you come back from break to see that's theres a yellow flag due to a crash that you missed, now you'll get to come back from break to see that there's been a yellow card dye to a foul that you missed.

You get people in England calling it footie.
Rugby fans calling rugby rugger.
It's no big deal.Just accept people in different parts of the world are going to use different words.

They need a shot clock and no passing backwards or going back past half. Either that or remove some players and open up the game. This is not interesting enough for me. I get why the World Cup is so popular with national pride on the line, but Seattle vs Salt Lake City has no bearing on me at all.
Some of us don't get our information about sports from the Simpsons.

Eh, this is for a separate thread but "Auto Racing" is not a sport and those people should be forced to pick a real sport that involves physical conditioning and physical skill.

Someone should tell Alonso he's wasting his time at the gym...

The MLS seems to be doing well for itself. The size and wealth of America can only be a good thing for the league if people continue to take an interest in it on a local level, and if its profile rises internationally.

Not hard to see why it's appealing, either. For a player like Bradley Wright-Phillips, the chance to live and work in the US is probably a strong enough reason in itself to go to the MLS rather than spend the rest of his career as a Championship and League One journeyman at clubs like Charlton.

I grew up watching soccer and the sports gets worse every year. Nowadays one team takes the lead and then doesn't do shit anymore (best example Chelsea vs PSG, they even had a one man advantage and couldn't be bothered to maybe try and get a second goal). Sure there are some exceptions to the rule but generally games have become so awful and boring to watch.

Imho you either have to make the pitch bigger (not gonna happen) or play 9 vs 9 (not gonna happen) so I think the only way to make it more interesting is to introduces blue cards like in youth/indoor soccer. The players simply have become way too athletic and there isn't enough space on the pitch.

Plus there are way too many games (just like in the MLB/NBA).

It was so perfect back in the 90s but nooo they had to change everything so the big clubs can make even more money. I don't want to see no fucking 4. placed team in the Champions League for christ's sake and tt's pretty obvious no one gives a shit about the Europa League (just look at attendance).

And don't get me started on english teams not fielding more than one or two english player...

I agree with you, but I find that it only applies to the game in Europe. I watch MLS, Liga MX, and Copa Libertadores because the games are still unpredictable and still have a recklessness that I love.

Only team in Europe I watch is Rayo Vallecano because they go for goals whether they play Levante or Barcelona.

I'd like to see a US/European tournament within 10 years, would be great IMO. Maybe Europa League European teams though, can't see the US competing with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern & Barca just yet.

I feel MLS teams should work on beating Mexican and other CONCACAF teams consistently in the CCL first before worrying about European teams. And it's pretty safe to say that will take more than 10 years.

It shows how little you care about the sport when you can't take two minutes to learn about its naming conventions and realize that there are several countries with alternative names for the sports due to local languages and/or having other, more popular, football codes. In the second category you have not just the United States and Canada, but also Ireland, Australia, (to some extent) New Zealand, and South Africa.

NYC FC is owned by Manchester City, which is why they have the same colors.

Why americans can't do like the rest of the world and insert adds in one corner of the screen (silently) or a voice over when nothing important is happening or even like they do recently like AR displaying images over the side of the field or even in the field? Subtely.

The guy you're quoting is getting riled up over nothing, it doesn't matter what it's called, we all know what's meant.
But apart from SAfrica, football either is or is increasingly becoming the normal term for the majority of people and official use in the countries you've listed.

Diehard MLS people kind of amuse me. These people actually think that the league is on the verge of becoming a serious destination for stars meanwhile most of their players are getting paid below the average starting salary of an engineer.

I really agree with this, in about 10 years football will take over some other sports in the USA as one of the most watched sports on TV. It will be long ways before football takes over NFL but I can see it happening.

It's not even close to the NHL, the weakest of the four major sports, in terms of market power in the USA, let alone Canada.

The poll earlier doesn't account for the fact that many people who would say that the NFL or MLB is their favorite league to watch also consume pro basketball and hockey. They also enjoy college basketball and football. College football is huge.

The MLS is decades away from overtaking a growing NHL. It's nowhere near the NFL. It's a joke to suggest otherwise. Changes in demographics are not going to account for that large of a change in market share.

I don't think people realize how deeply football in the USA has become embedded in communities across the USA. Go to any town in the USA on Friday Night or Saturday afternoon in the fall and just watch. Football isn't boxing.
