I remember watching an interview with the actor for Jar Jar and he was talking about it as something they had planned. But the absolute hate towards the character gave Lucas cold feet. I think it could have been amazing since we all just saw Jar Jar as this big goofy clownish thing and seeing him become evil would have been far more shocking than finding out that the powerful jedi master Yoda was a green little guy.
