Just curious what you folks use?

I've never been able to use the touchpad on my laptop. It's too slow, and there's no scroll, so I just don't like using it. I've been using a mini USB mouse since I got this laptop and I can't imagine not using it now. But I know people who hate the idea of using a mouse with a laptop (why?)

So: external mouse or touchpad? :D

One of those small mini usb mouses works great. I've been thinking of getting one of the newer ones with the retractable cords. Can't stand touchpads.

internal bluetooth wireless mouse

touchpads are totally lame, but a laptop HAS to have one since the ultimate in portability involves having nothing attached. I typically use the touchpad only when I want to use the laptop for less than a minute, or when i'm using it in a crammed situation (like standing in line).

That would be pretty cool. I just have my cable shortened with a cable tie because it's so long. Sell a mouse as a laptop mini mouse...and bundle it with a 2.5m cable!! :lol

I use the touchpad when I am using my laptop away from home or in a place where I don't have the space for a mouse.

Otherwise I just use my wireless usb mouse.

I'm pretty much the same way with most of the responses so far. I'll use a usb mouse when it's possible, but have used the touchpad on several occasions. One of these days, I hope to be using either a wacom tablet (cintiq) or tablet pc.

At school where I have a desk, wireless USB mouse it is. At home I don't have a desk so when I use it, it is usually in my lap, so touchpad it is. So in other words, if possible, the mouse is the way to go, although I have learned a lot of keyboard shortcuts since the summer started.

My mom uses a USB mini mouse. It's a bit tiny for my hands so I use the stick (There's also a touch pad but it's too slow). The stick is the best for me because it's fast and after so many times I used analog sticks I'm really used to it by now. If there's a normal mouse though, I'll use it instead.
BTW, am I the only right handed that uses his left hand for laptop sticks? I find it weird that I like it that way more, and so does my mom :P

IBM Trackpoint.

... once you go nipple you'll never use a touchpad again...

My Toshoba has one of those too. Does yours have that sticky blue cover on it? I can't find any replacement ones anywhere.

I also have a small USB mouse with a retractable cord, it's only like 2.5" long with a scroll wheel, it's very convenient. I'll be taking my Wacom tablet to use when it ake the laptop on vacation with me.

IBM (or lenovo now ?) sells red replacement caps.

I only use touchpad in dire circumstances (i.e. when on an airplane flight). Otherwise, mouse all the way. I have a mini retractable USB mouse that I love using more than a regular mouse. Does wonders for my Quake scores :lol

IBM's nub is the best.
Still, nothing's better than a mouse - I use a tiny wireless mouse if I need to do a lot of cursor movement.

I use a Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse. My laptop mostly just sits on my desk area. If I'm traveling I'll use the touchpad, but otherwise always the mouse. I used to use the touchpad solely, but then I started doing more graphic design work and video editing, and after buying this mouse I can't go back.

my work pc is a laptop. When I'm using at work, I have a docked mouse ready and waiting.

When I'm out on business I use the touchpad, but disable the 'tap to select' thing, which really annoys me - its always going off when I don't want it too.

So I use the touchpad with the buttons.

Most touchpads have built-in vertical and horizontal scroll if you drag across the right and bottom edges respectively. I can use touchpads pretty efficiently, but I still prefer an actual mouse.

I use the trackpad because I can't convince myself to spend the money on a mouse. Sad, but true. That, and I just have so many hot-keys I rarely need the mouse.
But those nubs...ugh, they just irritate my finger for some reason. I don't feel right using them.

Powerbook trackpad with two-finger scrolling. Although, I do plan on getting a bluetooth mouse to carry around with me for when I can find a desk. Any suggestions?

I got a USB mouse, but 90% of the time, I just use the touchpad. Mine has a scroll bar on the side, so I'm not lacking in that feature. It's gotten to the point that I can even use the touchpad with no problems when playing FPS games too.

Depends on what I'm doing. Many times when I'm writing code or just generally using the machine the touchpad is good enough. If I'm working with something like Photoshop or similar, I'm heading straight for a machine with a mouse.

my mouse eats up batteries like crazy, so when I still can, I use the mouse...and if I'm gaming, I usually use the mouse as well. Otherwise, I have no problem with using the touchpad. Mine is really responsive so no complaints there.
