The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Just finished watching it.... self-serving? A bit... beautifuly filmed and choreographed? IMO yeah..... plausible? probably not, but a nice movie none the less...

I thought this movie was awesome. There is way too much hate for it...but I guess I can see why. I'm biased towards samurai movies...they just grab me for some reason.

I saw it in Tokyo when it came out in Japan and all my friends loved it.

I figured TLS would have one a Oscar for costumes at least...I guess it didn't?

The score was incredible, even if it was derivative as some say. I loved the cinematography though, I didn't think it would hold up after a second viewing due to how idealized everything was, but it held up well.

The battles made the movie... period. The "story" was just "Dances With Wolves 2: Japan," but I still enjoyed it because of the fights and Samuri town parts. I'd rate it above average.

What movie would you consider good?

This movie rules on so many levels, not even connected with plot. The plot was nice too, but this movie is ANYTHING but awful on a technical level. The shots are unreal, the score incredible, the scenery amazing, the acting top-notch. And no, that's not really arguable. On any level. I can see where the plot might annoy, but the duality and meanings in the plot more than make up any shortcomings it may have in my mind.

I'd love to see a movie that made me consider The Last Samuri as "awful." Please, enlighten me, in more than one word.

We are one

The Red Warrior is the coolest song by Hans Zimmer since that one theme from The Rock

Say something or shut the fuck up entirely.

I loved it. Hell of a lot more than ROTK that's for sure.... *grumbles about ROTK*

Not that they can be compared really, it's only because they came out at a similar time. I guess it's a bit more like Gladiator in style.

One of the best movies of the decade for sure (although it shares quite a lot in common with Glory, and a couple other minor gripes). TLS should have been awarded Best Costume and Best Original Score, but the Academy is full of crap with this years' retroactive praise for the LotR trilogy.

The movie certainly was "awful" but I see nothing extraordinary about it either. Pretty average movie overall with a very large budget and great cast. Am I the only one who sees it as a copy (or at least inspired) by "Dances with Wolves"?

Well, that might be because the same guy directed Last Samuri and Glory ;)

I know that most directors carry their trademarks over from film to film, but TLS and Glory has more than a couple scene-for-scene similarities.

But like I said, a minor gripe. Zwick probably did it on purpose for all I know.

..i was talking to a friend about how awesom the movie was and his response was since when was the last samurai an American?

I just couldn`t stop laughing

Great flick, Hans Zimmer's score is simply amazing, I've had it on loop for the last few weeks. Heh.... I remember when I saw this at the cinema, I was dreading the end when the lights came back up, my eyes were all red & puffy, it just had one of those real powerful endings that just tugs on the heart strings.

I think alot more people would've liked this movie if tom cruise wasnt in it, but then it would lack the outsider looking into the world of the samurai aspect. Some of the best scenes in the movie are when cruise's character learns about japanese culture...well what used to be japanese culture anyway.
