Late: Why Did Criterion halt GCN support?

I know I'm quite late to party. But after watching the Burnout Revenge nad Black videos i'm kinda puzzled why they stopped. Burnout I and II sold well well didnt they? All EA's other titles are multiplatform anyway. Alot of people dont know this but Burnout started life on the early Dolphin kits before being ported to PS2.

Yeah, somebody interviewed Alex Ward during the Burnout 3: Takedown pre-release, and he said something along the lines of no-online audience, and that the online component was really important. I can't remember exactly what he said... but he was definately the one that broke it to Cube Europe that Takedown wouldn't be coming to Cube.

Since then, I guess they've figured they'd just leave it alone at that point.

Sony supported more online with PS2 than Nintendo did with GC? I thought it was about equal.

In terms of hardware provided, I guess you'd of been right. The ethernet-inclusive silm-PS2 wasn't out at this point.

However, while Sony and Nintendo signed many of the same online middleware agreements, Nintendo never made any of their own online games - which is a reassuring move that shows third parties you're really interested. Without their own games online what motivation would Nintendo have to provide the 56k and BBA adaptors and grow a sizable userbase?

Sony themselves now have many many "Network Enabled" PS2 games sitting on shelves. Nintendo don't.

Dude, if someone asks for clarification, I don't think throwing some unkown acronym at him is going to work!!
Lemme break this down for you:

Your initial post was incorrect. About as incorrect as one could possibly get. Hence the reaction. This comment is a bright indicator of a lack of knowledge...but then again...with a non-OVA Kenshin avatar that isn't much of a suprise.

“They are right” is pretty much another way of saying that the poster agrees with those that found your post rediculous.

QFT means “Quoted for Truth”. The meaning behind that post could have many meanings so I'll leave that up to you to decipher.

Nintendo isn't even a player in the online competition. That will change with the Rev but Nintendo missed their boat this gen despite Sega's best efforts

Ohohohoohhhhhhhhh... below the belt.

The way Kenshin is drawn in the OVAs is fucked up. Manga > *. Since I wanted slides of Kenshin in color, I chose for some captures of the TV series.

The dude that said "You know, I think they are right" didn't make any sense because he was replying to my post that basically said "Ok now I get it" because I said "Sony does what Nintendon't."

Ok.

Class dismissed!

the lack on online on cube for burnout 3 was just a pr excuse. all of the tracks and cars were available offline. the only thing online added was head to head racing, stat tracking, and something else minor.

there is no reason it shouldn't have come out on cube when both 1 and 2 sold enough to warrant its release on cube.

Yeah both Burnout games sold well on the Gamecube even in europe.

They could've made it online for the Cube if they wanted. The hardware is there, and you know there's a certain number of people out there screaming for online games. The opportunity was there to tap a market that nobody else is tapping. If anyone had bothered making online games for the Cube, I'm sure they would have sold just fine--it would have been a good way to make your game stand out from the crowd, get some attention on a platform where only Nintendo games usually do.

On the other hand...

The guy who said Sony and Nintendo equally supported online gaming was correct, to a point. They both manufactured hardware but didn't provide an online service, so on the face of it it was the same. But Sony was pretty vocal about wanting online games, and Nintendo was pretty vocal about not wanting them. I think, behind the scenes, that Nintendo was actively discouraging developers from making online games--downplaying the market size, probably telling them that they weren't shipping any more BBA's, etc. It's the only explanation for the zero online games outside of Phantasy Star, even back when they had online hardware on the market and Sony didn't.

Do you really believe that they didnt bring burnout 3 to gc because of the lack of online options??? :lol

I never bought the excuse either, just going along with the reasoning Ward provided.

oh nintendo fans you so funny

Well, after moving to the end of this gen im happy that i didnt waste money on buying the online adaptor for ps2......infact im happy i didnt was any money for playing online....my pc has been enough....

GC burnout sold more than xbox burnout, by a fair share if i remember the numbers correctly.

The online thing is a weaksause excuse, because the single player game is fine on it's own.

Comes down to lazy developers and the gc being the scapegoat for jackoffs this generation.

Or maybe devs do it just to piss off nintards like you? just an idea.

Criterion was with Accliam before Burnout 3 and now they are a part of EA. I'm sure if EA gave them the time and resources to do a GC version also, they would...

Yeah that's it, I can see the board meeting.

"I see this Wobedraggled guy on GAF and he seems to like nintendo an awful lot, let's dump support and piss him off"

Awesome.

1. The Nintendo audience consist of little kids and jaded fatasses, the former of which play whatever their parents buy them -- usually family-friendly Nintendo fare -- and the latter who don't buy games to play them but to make a smug ideological statement of preference on messageboards.

2. The GC is underpowered and couldn't handle a game as visually complicated as Burnout 3+.

I've managed to stay out of this so far, but I have to say, you're utterly wrong.

*yawns* go away

Not that I know him in person but back when Burnout 2 was released his comments weren't pretty GC-positive...At least that's the feeling I got from the CE interview:

Q: Will the GameCube version have some advantages over the PS2 version?

[Alex Ward] The disc that it comes on is a lot smaller.

Q: Do you think we should expect a Burnout 3?

[Alex Ward] No.

Q: Have you got any other games in development/planned for Nintendo GameCube? and will any of them be exclusive (even with limited time)?

[Alex Ward] No.
That's what I was refering to. If he is a Nintendo fan or not is a thing I really don't know.
