BluRay just keep getting the names. Look like we got a future winner!

I wouldn't be so quick there. HD-DVD is pushing ahead on their own too, and what's looking more likely is that we'll have two competing HD formats and the average consumer will just be confused and not care about it at all. In that case, no one wins.

I did a search for "Apple" and didn't see it pop up with any Blu-Ray topics...

But Apple is on board as well!

IMO Blu Ray has too much backing for HD DVD to stand a chance.

Holy f*ck what's with me and not fully reading threads today?! Sorry. :p

HD-DVD stuff:

A shot of NEC's HD-DVD/DVD/CD unit, final form factor (they're calling it a "mass production trial run" unit). They were showing "Day After Tomorrow" using VC-1. It ships in September, with the HD-DVD-R/RW recording version shipping in November:

A shot of the joint Toshiba/Samsung slimline laptop HD-DVD/DVD/CD unit (reads HD-DVD-ROM, HD-DVD-R, HD-DVD-RW, DVD and CD; writes DVD and CD) and its pickup, along with a SL 15GB HD-DVD-R, a SL 20GB HD-DVD-RW and a DL 30GB HD-DVD-ROM. This drive will appear in high end laptops starting in December 2005 (featured laptops priced from $1855).

BenQ rules...thanks to them I was able to gaze at Ivana Santilli with idle lust at a free concert.

And I hope this new generation DVD format war is cleared up one way or the other. Christ, can't believe we go through this nonsense everytime.

woot! At that speed it would take 2 1/2hrs to burn a 50GB BRD. :lol

8x would be ~23min. That's not too bad.. but I think it will be a while before we can pull off 30+ MBps sustained buffers while multitasking.

This is really weird.

Blu-Ray effectively owns the hw market. Practically every major manufacturer of electronics and the bigger PC makers have thrown in their support.

Yet, HD-DVD has the confirmed movie studio support. Granted, its not exclusive - but why do the studios appear to prefer HD-DVD? I would think the history of Beta-Max would show them that HD-DVD could already be in trouble. I don't see how it will be able to compete on HW prices in the long-term with that many companies backing Blu-Ray.

I think movie studios are interested in the money returns HDDVD will give them. At first it'll cost less to manufacture, and because the strong possibility that HDDVD will be inadequate in the next 10 years, they'll get to sell their collection movie box sets AGAIN.

If BR makes it, I think it has the potential to keep the market for 20 years. It'll fully maximize HD picture, and how often do we change TV format standards?
