This is what is known as minor stunt casting for the hell of it.
Maybe his race has important implications to the plot. Like Man of Steel is a heavy morality tale that indicts every one in the United States for their complicity in institutional racism.

It will hold up a mirror to society's face and say, "YOU are Time Magazine's Person of the Year."

and nothing says institutional racism like a black man being the chief editor of a major daily newspaper. ;)

Or a realization that if they stayed faithful to the source material, they'd have a film that was basically all white. And in a city like Metropolis, which is supposed to be inspired by cities like Chicago and New York, it'd be a tad bit weird.

There's of course also the possibility that if he auditioned for the role, fishburne was the best actor.

Of course when newspapers are about to go extinct they give a black man the job! OF COURSE!

Casting choices made for the sake of getting a diversity award is never a good thing. I want a Superman movie that doesn't suck not something that fulfills a Benetton Ad so people can feel good about themselves.

I want something that isn't going to be a slow mo fuck fest.

I find this hilarious, because the Daily Planet is owned by Franklin Starn, a black man. Why they didn't have him in the movie?

Yep that's what this was.... Seriously though how do people watch a movie set in a city and NOT notice that everyone is white? That would jump off the screen to me. Also, Fishburne is PERFECT for Perry.

Then it will sadden you to learn that in the film Lois Lane has a severed spine and is relegated to a wheelchair. In the name of diversity.

Why is that? I can't imagine any problem here. Now if they made Black Panther white then thats one instance where its changing a vital aspect to the character's identity.

My statement doesn't require a quota to be put in place, simply a decision to not bound characters to their source material's skin color, allowing any actor or actress to try out for the part.

Is he even that significant of a character within the Superman universe?

Between this and the new "Spiderman" news I can't help but feel white people are being mistreated in the name of "diversity." Spiderman is white. Perry White is white. Nick Fury is white. Always has always win; pretending otherwise is basically discrimination, telling long standing fans "sorry, your race is no longer the in-thing."

What if I made a film about Martin Luther King and he was played by Paul Walker?

He would have been if they had cast Fishburne as him in the movie.

Well, I'm assuming the script was already completed, or at the very least, near completion when they started casting actors in roles.

FWIW, I had a black editor when I wrote for Chicago Tribune about 20 years ago.

At least he wasn't cast as the police chief. As an aspiring screenwriter, I will go out of my way to never write Police Chiefs as black.

Gotta be trolling. I was going to type an actual rebuttal but it seemed too obvious a point to make.

Then they fucked up. I'm always going to be a proponent of more diverse comics world. It's one of the most important topics ithe industry.

I'm never going to be for race/gender/sexuality swapping.

I agree, the difference between this and the Spiderman news is someone is talking up the Spiderman mantle that happens to be black.

the set in plano, il (my home town) is for a
tornado sequence
, this is very exciting!

Very curious if a helicopter shots are going to reconstruct a town around main street

Should have been Perry White on Smallville, could have told Clark to free his mind to get him to fly sooner.

Dont have any problems with him as Perry, just hate that the movie was delayed.

If the script is good, I think Zack Snyder will deliver a good film. Out of all the factors going into this, it's the script that is the biggest question mark.

Watchmen was fantastic.

Well, enjoy your disproportionately white films then. The industry is carried by remakes and book/comic/cartoon adaptations, all of which are dominated by white representation.

I personally think a mixture of both would be suitable, assuming an ethnicity/gender/sexuality swap is not damaging to the character in areas outside of those that are purely visual.

The most important thing to recognize is that this movie is going to kick major ass.
