this is the thing you're thinking of, then it doesn't read like it's one riot developer's whim at all, but i can't tell if you got that impression from there or it was somewhere else. i can't really get much from the reddit thread cos reddit is a cesspool and rioters get downvoted cos reddit is a really bad website
i think it's not such a great idea, before playing much ranked i used to exclusively play normal games and i enjoyed looking at my normal games stats to see which ones were my best champions and whatnot, but i can see where they're going with trying not to add meaningful consequence to your ranked matches.
they're planning on adding a service to their api so websites can authenticate users so that they know it's you and then they can show you your own stats, which seems to me like it fixes the big issue with the change
i'd say the best idea would be to continue delivering stats in the same way until that change goes through
more than anything i wish riot would actually do the stat tracking league deserves already. overwatch is pretty good at that, even if win % are BEYOND FUCKED
