Leak: Xbox Rog Ally releases October 16

modified version of windows that doesn't launch into the desktop and saves multiple GB of memory compared to normal windows
Which should actually be the most important and interesting thing every time a device with these features is announced...

Then, the fact is that there aren't 20 other handhelds with the technical specifications of that RoG Xbox Ally either.

Any word on the gaming OS being released for other things?
I could use a clean install on my Desktop.
The thought of redownloading 2TB of games is a bit daunting, but would be faster to download than to use a portable spinning HD.

If the X version had a larger+better screen than my current Ally X, I'd buy one. It doesn't, however, and they've said the current Allys will get the modified version of Windows, so there's zero reason for me to buy one of these, sadly.

Nice handhelds, let down by the rather small screen size. The MSI Claw A8 seems a better buy if you want a Z2 Extreme handheld (assuming you install SteamOS/Bazzite as MSI Windows software is truly dogshit)

8" on the Switch 2 seems nice. Anything smaller is a disappointment.

What's different between this and the other 20 handhelds on the market?
There's an "Xbox" sticker on it
So it will be a commercial failure.

The UI is the most interesting thing here. If it plays nice and is effective and efficient with performance (and maybe have a proper sleep mode) I hope MS releases it to regular Ally X.

I wonder how many people that jump in these threads to defend the ROG Ally Xbox are going to buy one. Not to be a smart ass, but to get an idea if there might actually be an uptick in sales from previous ROG Ally PC handhelds.

They have stated that ALL windows handhelds will get the UI starting early next year, likely after Xmas.

SteamOS can't run Gamepass natively so it's worse than dog shit for Gamepass users, Xbox users, FortNite users, Madden NFL and EA FC users, COD and Battlefield users, EA Play Pro and Ubisoft+ subscribers.....

Dual boot then. The advantages of SteamOS/Bazzite (usability, performance, battery life) for your Steam Library is just too good to ignore. Although playing competitive shooters on a handheld doesn't seem like the best option.

The point of the Xbox full screen experience on this device is to negate any SteamOS advantages in usability, performance, battery life. Also, Steam Deck has bad Windows 11 driver support.

And neither MSI nor ROG Ally have official SteamOS driver support. Which will be worse for this device since it has Xbox certified triggers and tech.

I have my doubts that Microsoft can catch up to Linux when it comes to battery drain on handhelds. Way too much bloat at the moment. But I guess we will see. And while SteamOS is slowly getting broader support, Bazzite works quite well on AMD handhelds.

I've been waiting for the right one before jumping into the handheld PC market. They almost had me, but the lack of touchpads to use on mouse centric games is a deal breaker.

I am disappointed that they did not include some kind of touch pad but I'm still holding out hope that the new streamlined Windows is going to exceed my expectations. I would love for that to happen but it will need to be significant for me to drop $$ on this instead of just getting a much less expensive Z1 Extreme handheld. So far, the performance increase doesn't seem to be that significant. That, or hold out for Steam Deck 2 Electric Boogaloo.

Microsoft started testing its Xbox Copilot on iOS and Android earlier this year, and now it's bringing the chatbot to the Game Bar feature on Windows 11. Xbox Insiders can start testing a preview of the Gaming Copilot integration in the Game Bar today, and Microsoft is planning "further optimizations" for this new feature on the upcoming Xbox Ally handhelds.

Article:
Microsoft demonstrated this handheld-friendly combination of Windows and Xbox to The Verge in a briefing earlier this week, but it was a virtual demo so we haven't been able to try it fully yet. It all starts by booting directly into a new Xbox full-screen experience on these ROG Xbox Ally devices that focuses on the Xbox app and Game Bar, alongside being a launcher for all your PC games — yes even Steam ones.

Makes me wonder excactly how lean and lightweight this "gaming" version of Win11 will really be. 🧐 Was hoping they'd ditch all bloat and unnecessary telemetry & services. Could be MS gives us an option to easily disable/uninstall...but that's usually not how they do things.

We'll see soon enough I guess.

worst case scenario, you gotta edit a few registry files to turn it off. but I assume you'll be able to turn it off in a menu

Would be more user friendly to have an opt-in for everything that takes away from efficiency. But seeing the raging hard-on MS has for Copilot I can easily see a scenario where it would be a pain in the ass to get rid of.

But yeah, users used to PC won't have too much trouble removing it. Just a few months until we'll see what they've been cooking.

a better use for the Ryzen AI chip would be a custom FSR4 version... but I don't expect that to happen.

Hmm yeah.
What's even the usage for Copilot? Recommending similar games to what you've just played? Scraping internet for library art and game info?
I need to know more. If it's used in a clever way it could be cool but otherwise it'll just slow down the UI.

I have a 4TB Nvme that I only use for Steam/gog/egs/ etc. only the game libraries go there. I've moved it between two rigs this year and all i do is point the program at the drive when I migrate.

Way easier/faster than any other method imo.

I also use network transfer when installing Steam games whenever possible.

They talked about how it could help with difficult games, so I'm guessing maybe a "live" guide/tips during gameplay. But who knows, it'll need to be something very clever indeed to be worth it IMO.

NGL, Microsoft cancelling its own handheld and Xbox users having to settle with some licensed, expensive ASUS shit really, really sucks, even if I never owned any Xbox and was never planning to get it. I genuinely feel bad for my fellow Xbros.

You can talk to it with voice control and ask it for help in real time as you're playing.

They don't need to do first party handheld because OEMs will do it for them. Future AMD APU handhelds have Xbox console library BC and compatibility. The ROG Xbox Ally is just stop gap measure.

That's actually kinda cool. As long as it's not intrusive and start asking if you need help when you mess up or giving you advices without you asking for it…

I've been following the benchmarks, and I have been holding out hope that the performance delta increases in favor of the Z2 with some updated drivers. This isn't a given of course, and it may not change much.

Edit: I'm absolutely a layman when it comes to such things, I just saw some mentioning that this was a possibility. It could just be cope.
