Legacy of Kain: Defiance appreciation thread

SWEDISH PERFECTION
Since I just finished the game, I wanted to give it some well-deserved praise. I've been following the series since Blood Omen, and Defiance is probably the best game of them all IMO.

I was somewhat disappointed in Soul Reaver 2 (although I can understand why, because the game was kind of rushed).
In Defiance, they fixed just about everything that bothered me with SR 2. The pacing is much better, the continue/save system is more convinient, it's fairly easy to know where to go all the time (since they even tell you in the pause menu), puzzles are more satisfying and logical, battles are more fun, you gain new attack moves (and play as two different characters at that) and the special attacks are cool to play around with. It's simply more fun to play.
The switch between different realms is also made in a much better way (you don't lose any energy when switching, for example).

The script, voice acting and voice direction is EXCELLENT. Even though it's been good before, I think Defiance stands out as the best yet. The dialogues and monologues are wonderfully written and performed, without being too long-winded and pretentious (which I thought was the case with SR2 at times). The cutscenes are cooler, the story is more interesting and complex while still being somewhat managable for my thought process. :P

The fixed camera system works, in some cases, much better than the free control camera in previous games. And in other cases, the camera is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, I think it's the better system had it just been polished more.

Graphics are great (VERY improved from Soul Reaver 2). I really love the look of the spectral realm now, with the blur effect going on, the intense light from the "spectral" sun, the colors. Impressive graphics all-around.

Music is good too...although they recycled some music from previous games. I wish they would go for orchestrated music next time, along with choir, organs and similar. Would really enchance the epic feel of the game.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the next game...will be interesting see how it will be different. Because I'm confident it will be. Crystal Dynamics have confirmed at least one more game and a 2005 release seems likely (unless they decide to hold off until next gen).

Defiance's combat is so much f'n fun it's not even funny.... especially once you get the controls down... it really starts to flow.... attack, air launch, multi-hit... grab... throw away.... awesome stuff.

Though the series has changed from the original vision that SK had I've enjoyed all of the games in some form or fashion,

The story took a few twists and turns that I didn't expect and the final resolution of the relationship between Raizel and Kain honestly broke my heart... but there's definitely alot more to be told... Great voice acting, great music, great mood....

Amy Henning oversaw the development many of the games, and now with her gone I'll be curious to see what happens....

It was good. Nothing spectacular in my opinion. Unfortunately, Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance don't add much to the story. It's like they keep trying to re-interpret certain events of Blood Omen. They could have done so much more. I mean Blood Omen 1 had so many cool characters and about 13 subplots. Soul Reaver and since has had a very stagnant plot. "I'll kill you Kain", "Raziel don't believe everything you see", "time to die kain", "Raziel, are we pawns in the game", "Die by my blade b*tch".

I liked it though. It still was disappointing. Soul Reaver 2 was pretty cool though, at least it had some cool story moments.

I didn't know Amy Hennig left the dev team...I hope it won't affect the overall quality too much. :/
She directed Defiance and also co-write the script IIRC (from the credits I just saw :P). I've really learned to love this series, as I was hesitant about the original Soul Reaver being such a big step away from Blood Omen. It's cool how they've managed to tie together all the games story-wise though.

Bleh I'm hugely disappointed by Defiance, ever since the original Soul Reaver the series has seen a steady decline in quality. The only good thing about Defiance in my opinion is the graphics, which portray the land of Nosgoth very well.

The game itself though...you just walk from checkpoint to checkpoint while the game is holding your hand in what to do next, going from pointless battle to pointless battle to very small and linear dungeon (in which you don't have to explore because everything is handed on a silver platter) with something easy you have to do which is supposed to be a puzzle. The game is just a chore to play mainly because there is no challenge at all. The only things that kept me going were the story (although that too could use a lot of new ideas) and the graphics.

I really like Defiance as an action game and the story is always top notch (I too almost shed a tear for Raziel at the end). But that was the problem... I liked it as an action game. It just didn't have that "Evil Zelda" feeling that Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2 had. Sure, none of the games have been as big as they implied, but I just didn't feel the epic this time. It didn't help that all the fonts were practically the same design either. I was hoping for more varied levels like in Soul Reaver 2.

Outside of that, I had fun but I'd love to see the next one try to be more like Fable/Zelda and less like Devil May Cry, if it ever happens.

I'm unsure what's going with the next LoK game. Last February, Chris Bruno (one of CD's lead testers) posted at the Eidos boards and said that a new one was in planning stages but he had no idea when it would be announced. However, I'm curious who will be making the game. The team at CD responsible for SR1&2 and Defiance has been working on Tomb Raider 7 since they finished Defiance. Also, there was a rumor going around some time ago that a whole different developer would be making a new LoK starring Raziel in "a more contemporary setting." I don't think it's true for obvious reasons, but you never know. Although Amy Hennig's work on LoK will be missed, I do know that she had a meeting with the team and left behind plans and ideas for the next LoK's story so I'm not to worried about that. Though Defiance had somewhat dissapointing sales, I'm fairly certain they will release another LoK eventually.
