LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

What did I just do?

I think that might be the cheapest I've ever seen the Starter Pack O.O

Even when they did the crazy discount that stacked with the Target coupon and Cartwheel app last year mine still came out to like $60-something. Dang!

I picked up a starter pack from Amazon since it was on sale. Also got the BTTF level pack, Doc Brown, Aquaman, and Dr Who Robot cheap.

I held off because I was invested in Skylanders and Infinity. I kinda expected if one of them didn't continue it would be Dimensions because of the higher cost.

I'm a little concerned about the availability of the season one packs. Hopefully I'll be able to pick them up over the next few months.
I really like that they aren't doing new starters for the second season. Not having to buy a whole new starter is great.

Can those of you who are knowledgable in this game recommend me some packs to get? I have no interest in the Ninjago or Chimera (whatever) packs at all. All the rest are fair game.

Oh, and when is the best time to begin adding in extra characters—right away or wait til the story progresses some?

Doctor Who and Portal 2 level packs - original stories unlike the other level packs, also probably the best ones

Midway Arcade level pack if you're a fan of old games

Superman and/or Wonder Woman - they both have lots of powerful abilities (flight, mind control, gold brick breaking, ice).

Aquaman - don't remember if his ability is needed to unlock any new areas, or just get gold bricks. Either way, the water spray can be useful.

Benny - SPACESHIP!

If you don't by any Ninjago or Chima, you can't get 100% so I won't start recommending the best way to get that. :) (You can still platinum it/get all the achievements, though. In fact, you can do that with just the starter.)

Oh, and when is the best time to begin adding in extra characters—right away or wait til the story progresses some?
I would say right away, but try to leave the "core three" out so you hear all their dialog.

I think all of the level packs are at least decent. Back to the Future is worth it if you buy it for its cheap price at Best Buy.

Dr. Who and Portal were also my favorite story and character wise. I was blown away at how many different games you get with the Midway pack though. The arcade games are also great for getting a ton of studs in a hurry if you need it.

I just spontaneously bought Wonder Woman (based on your feedback) and Stay Puft (cuz I like that character). Can't wait to play later.

My next purchase will be Portal 2.

It's only a problem if you didn't get the Dr Who pack.

I'll get that eventually, maybe through Best Buy with my GCU discount.

But right now I'm not feeling good about this, only a few minutes into the game and the Wyldstyle pad broke. Won't work at all.
I called WB and sent the materials to get a replacement. Still, not the best first impression.

I've decided that I'm going to try really get back into this now that I have a clear schedule for a month or so. I know it's going to cost me a lot of money, but I want to buy the rest of the level packs and complete my collection. (curse you trophies).

Out of interest, do any of you try grab all the gold bricks? Do you get anything worth while for them? I wish there were trophies for the gold bricks, would make me want to go for them more often.

I got all of them.

Do you get anything worth while for them?
Obviously you'll need them to upgrade vehicles. Otherwise, they unlock a fifteenth red brick that turns on Disco Mode in the main hub.

I'm not sure that they'd be allowed to do that. The starter/level packs include everything you need to finish all of the related trophies. You need to buy a lot more stuff to get all 480 bricks.

Yeah I've got the plat already, just need to get the trophies from the level packs now.

I'm not sure I'll be going for every gold brick. It seems like a humongous time and financial consumption. Even if disco mode does sound awesome.

Ugh the flashing gold bricks, I hate them. Am I missing a really simple trick to ensure I get it every time? I never get it right, and often I'll end up hitting it when it flashes blue. Annoys me that you only get one chance at it unless I repeat the level again.

Edit: just realised that they don't actually contribute towards the gold brick score. Silly me.

You actually want to hit them when they're blue or, if you're lucky, purple. You get a certain number of studs of the color the brick is when you break it. I'm basically happy as long as I don't get silver.

My replacement tag for Wyldstyle came in. Now I can play this properly.
Better start looking into the Level Packs at Best Buy (and other places if they're on sale)

I'd say I'm off to a good start:

Mini Review:
I'd reckon that I'm about halfway through the main game at this point. So far, this is the best LEGO game I've ever played (which includes Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman). The overlapping characters and worlds has led to some funny dialogue and situations. One of my favorite lines happens early on in the story when Batman ends up in Oz. But the Simpsons and the entire Portal level are hilarious as GLADOS has her typical snarky comments throughout and Homer is Homer. One level I wasn't sure about, the Midway level, was actually really fun to play. Having Wonder Woman and Stay Puft inside Gauntlet was awesome. And having never watched any of the new Dr. Who, I thought I'd be lost when playing that level, but that has also been one of the main highlights. Also, I love that Wyldstyle is animated differently than the rest of the characters. She has less FPS in her motions like the entire LEGO Movie was animated, very jumpy and erratic.

Now... if only they could get a few of these in the game next year:

Is there a known issue with hire a hero on this game? I'm currently trying to find all the gold bricks on the Midway hub world, and I've managed to find about three so far using the hire a hero, but for some reason it has just completely stopped working. When I try to use it now, the character kinda shakes their head, and the box vanishes. Is there a limit per level or something?

Also, the races in the hub worlds can frankly fuck themselves. Trying to control any of the vehicles perfectly to ensure gold is a nightmare.

With Disney Infinity coming to an end, and having almost maxed it out - tempted to pick up a copy of this to play with the boys.

Starter pack is £54 in the UK, is the base content worth it? Doubt the mrs will let me get any other packs for a while (but Btff will be mine... someday)

At this point is it worth just holding out for the sequel?

Never used it myself, so this is strictly a guess, but maybe you don't have enough studs to hire them?

I'd say the base content is definitely worth it. You get a great 11 hour ish campaign, plus three different hub worlds to play around in. Once you start playing though, you'll soon realise the temptation to buy more levels is hard to resist.

You don't need to be perfect. Though having Superman/Aquaman helps significantly for the air/water races. (Make sure to double-tap... I think it's X (PS)/A (Xbox) to give yourself a boost every few seconds.)

For ground races, make sure your vehicles have been upgraded at least someone to improve the speed. The one from the Midway pack is pretty good, I've found.

It was mainly the Marble Madness race in the Midway hub world that was driving me the most insane. I'll give it a try with the Gamer kid's car next time instead of my trusty Batmobile.

Don't even get me started on the other race on the Midway hub world in that skate park :@

How is the Portal level pack? I've been wanting it for a while now, and the only level packs I currently own are Doctor Who and The Simpsons. I also really want that Chell minifigure and Companion Cube.

If you have any interest in Portal (which it sounds like you do), it's a must-have IMO. It's basically more Portal levels, but on your console. :D

Is this game worth it as a 28 year old? I don't need to play it with kids to get the full enjoyment? (This seems like a dumb comment, in retrospect)

Just wondering if it's worth the $50 for the starter kit on sale today, and having all the extra "stuff" lying around the house.

I do want it for the Portal + Simpsons stuff eventually, that's what drew me in but the cost of entry was too high.

32 year old here and I absolutely love it. It has provided me with many hours of entertainment, and considering I still have two level packs and about 8 hub worlds yet to explore, I imagine I'm going to get many more hours out of it.

And then there's the year 2 stuff to come, oh boy.

I’m 44 and I still enjoy playing Lego games.

As for worth it, to me it is at least. But I’m a very ‘collecta-thon’ type of person, so the games are perfect for me.

Although I am a bit unsure on the season 2 sets. Where I do mainly play the Lego games for collecting, I do also enjoying the overarcing story connecting the stages.

So I am uncertain on the self-contained sets of season 2.

Does it play like all the other Lego games? I don't really find the style of gameplay that appealing in them. (i.e. just smashing crates to get coins, simple puzzles)

I've just spent about four hours tonight playing around in the BTTF and Simpsons hub worlds. I'm glad I made the decision to finally fully explore them all as they went ignored by me for a long time. There's a lot of fun things to find and do amongst them all. Never in my life did I think I'd ever be playing a game which involved me solving a Portal puzzle with a companion cube, in the BTTF universe. Surreal and brilliant.

Obviously there are still a lot of things I can't do in these hub worlds cos I don't have the right character, or can't afford to hire them, but it's no big issue as I've come to accept now it's the way the game has been designed. Anyway, I'm not going after all 400 or so gold bricks, so missing the odd few ain't going to matter.

One thing I am intrigued by in the hub worlds are the various 'events' scattered around the places. I've not managed to unlock any yet as I haven't been able to find all the mini kits in specific levels. Anyone care to tell me what actually happens with these so called events?

37 here and really enjoyed the main story. I haven't gone into the hub worlds or played my BttF level pack yet, but for me, it was the nostalgia of older IPs and the jokes that were told between these worlds having to interact with one another. The Ghostbusters level alone had like 4 of the songs from the movie in it. I expected the main theme, but as you progress it throws some of the lesser known songs at you and it made the entire experience. I can't wait for Season 2's 80s nostalgia overload.

The BTTF level pack is pretty short Smurf, I definitely recommend checking out the hub world afterward to get your money's worth. Plus it's great fun going between the three time periods.

Got a really good deal on a starter pack today, and looking to pick up a couple characters to start off with. Which ones are recommended out of Homer (or Krusty), Slimer (or Peter Venkman), Doc Brown and Scooby/Shaggy? Looking for fun hub potential as well as the character being overall useful in abilities.

picked it up yesterday for $50, was able to get toys-r-us to price match amazon luckily.
this is an awesome fun game! was playing/building it for most of the evening with my girlfriend

really enjoying it, and looking forward to playing more tonight!
