What you guys recommend in the Watchmen style ? I like more dark, noir, gritty stories.

Top Ten, it isn't dark but it deals with dark subjects

For those who're fans of the bizzare, otherworldy style of arts and adventure, Prophet is a good read.

On distant future Earth, changed by time and alien influence, John Prophet awakens from cryosleep. His mission: to climb the the towers of Thauili Van and restart the Earth empire. But, news of the Empire's return brings old foes and allies out of the recesses of the vast cosmos.

Everyone should read this. Has the perfect mi of humour and intrigue. It's about a detective, Tony Chu, who can trace back the origins of anything he eats. If it's a fruit he can see who shipped it, picked it, planted the seeds etc. If it's an animal he can see who bought it, slaughtered it, raised it, sired it etc. And if it's a human.....

Chew is my favourite comic going right now.

Besides the occasonal Batman and Punisher, I don't really care for superhero stuff (Hawkeye and Immortal Iron Fist have been awesome though)

But holy shit, my eyes have been opened to the awesomeness that is Image and Vertigo. I've been missing out on many great series. As a fan of sci fi, horror, and crime/noir fiction, I'm like in seventh heaven. Between Wytches, Black Science, and Lazarus, some of the best genre stuff I've read in a while.

It's so awesome how the third tier superhero/ripoff publisher ended up becoming The Much Better Vertigo.

What was once all about art (just look at it's name) is now all about the writing.

Eh its still got a ways to go before it beats Vertigo in my heart.

Hack/Slash is good? I always thought its just smutty comic.

It's got a bit of that, but the simplest way I can describe it is it's a dirtier Buffy. A guilty pleasure that I don't feel all that guilty about. It's violent, daft, a bit of dark humour and a bit of sideboob. There are some good side characters too and if you go in not expecting the most cerebral read ever, it's quite enjoyable.

Irredeemable will fuck with your mind (at least the first half of it)

if you like despair stories (attack on titans, hunger games etc) this can quench your thirst

Tagging this thread for later. I've just gotten into comics recently and have been reading a lot of books from the library and marvel unlimited. East of West is a current favorite of mine.

What about The Sixth Gun? (I haven't read any of it, just waiting until it's finished since it will be this year)

There was a indie comic I saw in the comic thread about some kids and a spooky forest within the last year...anyone know what I'm talking about?

Why are people listing some of the most popular Superman and Spider-Man mini-series? Hilarious.

Also some of my picks other than those already mentioned:

Image Comics is making the other publishers look like nothing these days. Incredible titles nonstop.

I think you mean Smax, which is Moore's comedy fantasy spinoff and pretty great too.
Top 10 actually continues after that, but written by someone else.

Yes, I meant Smax. I didn't realize Top 10 was continued by someone else. Is it any good?

I have read a lot of these and recommend a lot of stuff in this thread.

Ones I haven't seen on the first page:

Deadworld
Crossed series
American Vampire

MikeDip

God bless all my old friends/And god bless me too, why pretend?
I really love 100 bullets, so that's another +1 for that comic series from me.

These may not be the most obscure series, but they are all worth checking out:

Chew is an absolutely phenomenal series.
The Manhattan Projects is cool, but really weird.
I would also recommend the Matt Fraction run of Hawkeye, its damn good and we have quite a few fans of it here.

Planetoid looks pretty neat. Is there just the single trade paperback though? Was released back in 2013.
Yeah, it's pretty much a self contained story. 5 issues

As long as it's emphasized that it is gore horror. For what it is, Crossed does it pretty good.

Horror is really one of the better non-superhero genre in comics. Has been for decades.
Wytches has been fantastic and I want to check out Nailbiter soon

I also recommend checking out Bloodshot and XO Man of War, both from Valiant!

Lets be honest here, everything Valiant did and currently does is awesome. It beats the snot out of Marvel and DCs constantly changing stories and retcons for the sake of no apparent reason. I still have the X-0 Manowar # 0 foil cover to boot, and Solar #0 3D version.

Although I am still sad that Lightning comics never took off, Perg was an amazing series.

Who the hell would advise crossed?

Hey now, you have to admit the storytelling is pretty damned amazing. And seeing some of the choices the characters are forced to make as time goes on really makes you feel sorry for them just to have to try and survive in what is in all reality a living hell. It is a worst case scenario survival gore series, and frankly the stuff of nightmares.

Irredeemable/Incorruptible are incredible.

Y: The Last Man and Transmetropolitan are some of my favorites too, though I'm sure they're more popular.

More bleak than The Walking Dead?

Oh boy.
I forgot about Crossed because it's been a while since I recommended it. I quite like it but I realised it was a bit much for some. There's a standalone story within the setting that's available as a free webcomic on their site if you want to give it a try.

The best way I found for getting into lesser known comics was through the Humble Bundle. They regularly offer comic 'bundles' where you pay what you want, and the proceeds go towards charity. This has been particularly great for the Image ones. And is a fun way to see the massive range of comics out there.

A lot of great comics mentioned already in this thread. My favourites are the
Wicked + the Divine (my current obsession)
Rat Queens
Chew

I also really enjoyed the first few issues of Saga and Alex + Ada.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"

gore horror is kind of an understatement.

I haven't really spent time with the post-Moore issues - he's just about the toughest act to follow in comics, and I guess I'm part of the problem by not persisting with the setting when somebody else it over after him.
